DERBY >> A local church is reaching out to the community to help outfit needy kids with new clothes, backpacks, pencils and notebooks when they head back to school this fall.
Pastor Walt Mayhew of Walnut Hill Community Church announced an online campaign has been launched via a GoFundMe page.
According to Mayhew, “more than 70 percent of the students in the Derby Public Schools” take part in the federal free and reduced lunch program, which he said indicates a high level of poverty existing right here.
“We want to ensure that each student returns (to school) as prepared to learn as possible,” Mayhew said. “Walnut Hill Community Church’s Derby Campus provides free back to school supplies based on a list provided by the district and clothing assistance to students who are identified by the school district as having such a need.”
