Wesley Village Halloween 5k & Fun Walk set for Oct. 25 in Shelton

SHELTON >> Over 500 runners and walkers are expected at the 6th annual Wesley Village Halloween 5k & Fun Walk on Saturday, Oct. 25

The event starts at 9 a.m. at the Wesley Village Campus, 580 Long Hill Ave, and features a 5k run, 1-mile walk and ½ mile Kids Fun Run. This year’s 5k course will be a flatter out and back course.

Bring the entire family for a morning of Halloween fun. At the post-race party there will be entertainment, a brunch with famous egg sandwiches, smoothies, fruit granola bars, bagels and more. Children’s activities include a bounce house, face painting, a clown and the opportunity to trick or treat. Costumes are encouraged. 

The first 400 5k entrants receive a free tech shirt. Cotton t-shirts will be given to all other event participants. Runners aged 70+ run for free, pre-registration is required. With over 10 percent of last year’s race field over 70, the race may have one of the highest percentages of older runners in Connecticut.

The race proceeds benefit award-winning programs at the Wesley Village campus, which provides independent living, assisted living, rehab services and skilled nursing care. 

The title sponsor for this year’s race is the CE Floyd Company. The Fun Walk sponsor is M&T Bank. The Kids Fun Run sponsor is Merit Insurance.  Also supporting this year’s race as major sponsors are O’Connor Davies, John J. Brennan Construction, Crown Uniform and Linen Service, McKesson Medical-Surgical and Serra and Del Vecchio Insurance.

5K on Derby Greenway to support domestic violence services

DERBY - Walnut Hill Community Church 5K Easter Run-Walk April 12 to fight domestic violence has received the support of the Valley’s top elected officials.

“I am very grateful to each of the Valley’s top elected officials for their agreeing to become advocates for the Walnut Hill Community Church Easter 5K Run-Walk. Their support is vital in our battle against domestic violence,” said the Rev. Walt Mayhew, pastor of Walnut Hill’s Derby campus.

 
Net proceeds are donated to The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services.

Statistics provided by The Umbrella Center demonstrate that this past year alone, more than 1,500 Valley residents have experienced domestic abuse and received services. 
The hotline has received more than 1,000 calls during that same period.
Their statistics further reveal the average age of the children impacted by this violence is 5.5 years old and that of those children 85 percent have witnessed the violence leading to inappropriate behavior including outbursts of anger, hitting and biting (69 percent), as well as experiencing sleeplessness (25 percent), fear (30 percent and nightmares (30 percent).

“It was statistics such as these that led us to launch the Easter 5K Run-Walk last year and come alongside these families who are precious in God’s sight,” Mayhew said. “This being our second year we wanted to reach out to the top elected officials in the Valley looking to raise both awareness and participation."

Top elected officials in agreeing to be an advocate and join the battle against domestic abuse agreed to place materials to publicize the Run-Walk in government buildings, and ask supporters to place lawn signs promoting the event. 

The Easter 5K Run-Walk will be held April 12 on the Derby Greenway.
Registration is $25. Check-in is at 8 a.m. A Fun Run is at 8:40 a.m. and 5K Walk–Run is at 9 a.m.

Pounding the Pavement planned in Seymour

SEYMOUR - I rarely win anything ... but today I got an e-mail from Seymour Pink, Inc. founder Mary Deming, saying I had won a pink cowbell in a contest sponsored by her nonprofit organization.

 

I won it for being the last person to sign up Sunday for the second annual 5K Pounding the Pavement for Pink event on Oct. 5, in which I will be walking, not running, thank you very much.

Deming has been running a contest on the event's Facebook page for those who form a team or who register to be on a team. She has been giving away pink merchandise to lucky 5K participants. 

I am a member of Griffin Hospital's Circle of Friends support group for breast cancer survivors and will be walking with our team of the same name.


Come out and support Seymour Pink ~ Join the fight against breast cancer and participate in what Deming promises will be an "over the top" event. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm a pretty quiet person, but with this cowbell in hand on Oct. 5 I just may become a bit louder.

Take steps to support Griffin cancer center, patients

DERBY - Griffin Hospital invites individuals and families to join the more than 500 walkers and runners expected to support local cancer patients at the 4th Annual Center for Cancer Care 5K Walk/Run beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 6. Starting in the cancer center’s parking lot, 350 Seymour Ave., this event will feature entertainment and post-event refreshments for participants and their family members.

Area cancer survivors are also invited to celebrate the event at a free survivors’ reception that offers food and free massages.

Proceeds from this fun, non-competitive event are earmarked for patient support programs at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital. 

Participants can walk or run individually, or may form a team with their family, friends, and co-workers. Participants may also collect pledges or purchase a commemorative sign to honor or memorialize a loved one. These signs will be displayed on the day of the event.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., with the walk/run scheduled to start at 9  a.m. 

Pre-registration is required; the first 500 registered participants will receive long sleeved T-shirts. Registration fee is $30.

Pounding the Pavement for Pink 5K planned in Seymour

SEYMOUR - Seymour Pink, Inc., in conjunction with Seymour Tradition Softball Program, is hosting a 5K run/walk Oct. 6.

The Pounding the Pavement for Pink 5K was named for Tara Miller’s creative entry to Seymour Pink’s ‘Name the Race’ contest this spring.

The 5K will begin at 9 a.m. on River Street and follow a course that brings participants by the Seymour Historical Society and Seymour Public Library, ending at the Seymour Community Center.

The race is timed and certified by Start-Line Race Services. 
The cost of the 5K is $25 for preregistration and $30 if you register on the day of the race.
All pre-registered participants will receive a Pounding the Pavement for Pink 5K T-shirt, goody bag, and light refreshments after the race.
The deadline for Mail-In registration is Sept. 28, but registration is also online at www.startlineraceservices.com.

Participants can register as a team and are encouraged to plan their outfits. There will be an award for best pink costume and special recognition for anything eye-catching during the event.

There will be a special survivors tent at the race, so please let Seymour Pink know if you or someone you know should be honored in the tent that morning.
This event directly precedes the Seymour Tradition "Smoke in the Valley Beer & Chili Fest" and also precedes the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event hosted by First Selectman Kurt Miller on Oct. 14.
