Valley Goes Pink to host Exciting Week of Events

DERBY - The 9th Annual Valley Goes Pink invites the community to another exciting week of events filled with concerts, chili and carats.

 

The Valley Goes Pink will host a Rock the Valley Pink concert on Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. at Porky’s Café, 50 Center St., Shelton, featuring Social Convention. A $20 donation includes admission and a free drink!

 

Bad Sons Beer Company, 251 Roosevelt Dr., Derby, will host a chili contest between first responders from the Valley on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. A $25 donation includes tasting and a vote. Cash bar for craft beer.

 

On Thurs., Oct. 25 from 3-7 p.m., Marks of Design, 389 Bridgeport Ave., Shelton, will host its 2^nd Annual Diamond Dig. Take your chances at winning precious gemstones, including a 1-carat diamond. The cost is a $40 donation for each bucket.

 

The Valley Goes Pink is a grassroots, community-wide effort throughout the Lower Naugatuck Valley to create awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection, support the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital, and showcase partnering organizations.

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Cultural Commission will kick off its free summer concert series Wednesday with The Soul Funk Band at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Main Street (next to City Hall.)  

The performance will run from 7 to 9 p.m. 
Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and snacks. Oxford Country Creamery will be selling ice cream.  

Sounds like a great way to spend a summer evening! 

Ansonia to kick off concert series with The Soul Funk Band

     ANSONIA - The Ansonia Cultural Commission will kick off its free summer concert series July 10 with The Soul Funk Band at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Main Street (next to City Hall.)   

    
    All concerts are from 7-9 p.m. 

    Other concerts scheduled are:

    July 24: 102 Army Band  - all members of armed forces and their families (past and present ) are especially invited to share this special evening of patriotic music.

    August 7: Starving Artists, classic rock band from Seymour.

    August 21: Mark Lanzieri, a local favorite, specializing in Sinatra tunes.

    Something for everyone! You are invited to bring a chair and snacks. 

    Country Creamery of Oxford will be selling ice cream.

    Also, the Ansonia Library will be on site collecting used and new books to sell or supplement the library’s inventory.

    Rain date will be the following day.

Ansonia Library group seeks book donations, members

ANSONIA - The Friends of the Ansonia Library are seeking donations of all book genres in reasonably good condition. 

Children's books and puzzles, CDs and DVDs are especially needed. 

 

Items may be brought to the Ansonia Library at 53 South Cliff St.

In addition, the Friends group will participate in the Ansonia Cultural Commission's Community Summer Concerts July 10 and 24, Aug. 7 and 21 at Veterans Park on Main Street, next to City Hall.

Concerts are 7 to  9 p.m.

 

Book donations will be accepted at all four events and Friends of the Ansonia Library membership forms also will be available. 

Please consider signing on as an active member to help in the planning of fund-raising events.

 

The library is a community treasure and it takes "a village" to keep it vibrant and healthy. Members will be on hand at the concerts to answer questions about becoming a volunteer for Friends.

Mixing music and ice cream in downtown Ansonia

Ice Cream 101: The series continues

Whew! At least I wasn't the only one eating ice cream Wednesday night at the second summer concert in Veterans Park.
I noticed lots of people lined up to get ice cream from Country Creamery's Fabulous Traveling Sundae Bus. Naturally I had to partake; anything for a blog post.
My daughter and husband joined me in enjoying sundaes, such as the one below.
I was urged to try Country Creamery at 144 Oxford Road, Oxford, so when I saw the bus I appreciated the convenience. It saved me an almost 18-mile round trip.

We also enjoyed listening to Soul Funk, a high-energy, New Haven-based band that got the audience up on their feet, singing and dancing to familiar rock, R&B and Motown tunes, mostly from the 60s and 70s.

The Ansonia Cultural Commission is sponsoring three free concerts in the park this summer. The final one, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 5, will feature Ansonia resident Mark Lanzieri, who is well known for his renditions of Sinatra tunes.

Summer concerts on tap in Ansonia

ANSONIA - The Cultural Commission is sponsoring three summer concerts to be held at Veterans Park next to City Hall.
Two adjacent parking lots will be utilized in the event there's an overflow. All concerts will be held on Wednesdays with a rain date scheduled on the following night.

The first concert is from 7-9 p.m. July 18 and features The Starving Artists, a classic rock band formed in 1992 by Dave McWilliams of Seymour and Rob Henry of Shelton. Both families have a long musical background.

George Lesiw, a jazz guitarist from Ansonia and a graduate of Berkley School of Music, and Gary Collins, formerly of the Beatles' tribute band "Apple" provide lead and harmony vocals.

The band focuses on '60s and '70s music, along with classic tunes from the Beatles, Guess Who, Creedence Clearwater, Willie Nelson, to name just a few.
So take your shoes off, relax and let the music take you back to a time when things were "free and easy."

     The second band, Soul Funk, will be featured at 7 p.m. Aug. 22. This band has played at Mohegan Sun on numerous occasions and has played locally at the PM Lounge on Main Street.
     The third concert will start at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 5 featuring our local star, Mark Lanzieri and his band.  Lanzieri is known for his "Sinatra" tunes and has a tremendous following throughout the Valley.
He is featured at the Holy Rosary Festival in Ansonia and the Ansonia Harvest Festival every year, as well as numerous restaurants. Lanzieri often sings at his famous hot dog stand in front of the Derby Superior Courthouse as he serves up hot dogs and sodas.
     All concerts are free and attendees are asked to bring chairs and snacks, and are encouraged to put on their dancing shoes.
