Seymour Announces Summer Concert Series Lineup

Griffin Offers Summer CNA Course

DERBY - The Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers, 300 Seymour Ave., Suite 206 in Derby, is offering a summer session of its Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course starting July 15.

The School is also taking applications for its Certified Clinical Medical Assistant course starting in the fall.

The CNA course offers students an affordable and condensed six-week schedule with classes Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Course content includes infection control, legal and ethical responsibilities, communications, body mechanics, moving and positioning residents, personal care skills, nutrition, measuring vital signs, and restorative care. 

The program’s clinical experience is at a long term stay facility and Griffin Hospital from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a total of 40 hours. After successfully completing the course and clinical experience, students will be qualified to take the certification exam for a Nursing Assistant in Connecticut. The CNA course tuition fee includes the course book, CPR training, and malpractice insurance coverage for the clinical rotation.

The Medical Assistant program prepares students to become multi-skilled healthcare professionals that specialize in outpatient settings. Medical assistants perform both clinical and administrative duties and assist a variety of providers including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Graduates of this program may find entry-level positions in medical offices, clinics, urgent care centers and may work in general medicine or specialty practices. This program also provides the diversity of other job options in the hospital or laboratory setting.

Set to start in the fall, the program will run for 28 weeks with classes five days a week from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., including 160 clinical hours at Griffin Faculty Physicians’ primary care offices and specialty offices such as gastroenterology, OB-GYN, surgical and cardiology.

Anyone 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or GED may apply for admission. 

Early application is encouraged for all courses, as space is limited.

Seymour Daycare Celebrates End of Summer

SEYMOUR – Teddy Bear Treehouse Learning Center http://www.teddybear-tlc.com/recently held its end of summer celebration with parents, grandparents and children, past and present, with an old-fashioned barbecue at the daycare center.

 

Owners Ann Marie and Dom Violano hosted the celebration, which highlighted many of the children who were leaving the daycare program to embark on the next chapter of their lives: kindergarten.

 

Teddy Bear Treehouse has been in business at 200 South Main St. since 1998, providing quality childcare and programs for children ages 6 weeks to 7 years old.

Ansonia's Summer Concert Series to Feature Backbeat

Free Cooking Demonstration

DERBY- Griffin Hospital and the Valley United Way will host a free cooking demonstration from 4 to 5 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Griffin Community Garden in front of the hospital, 130 Division St.

 

Chef Remo Santilli, Director of Food Services at Griffin Hospital, will demonstrate how to make a quick, easy and delicious summer dish which highlights some of the fresh vegetables in the Griffin Community Garden.

The Griffin Community Garden is part of the Valley United Way’s Grow Your Own initiative, which helps bring fresh produce to residents who need assistance getting healthy food. With gardens in Derby, Ansonia, Seymour and Oxford, Grow Your Own is designed to engage Valley neighborhood residents to actively participate in selecting, planting, maintaining, harvesting, and preserving fresh, nutritious produce. The ultimate goal of this program is to help “food insecure” residents obtain healthy fruits and vegetables to supplement what they are currently getting from local food pantries – as well as to encourage neighborhood residents to start their own gardens and improve their eating habits, helping alleviate one of the biggest social obstacles to good health.

ANSONIA - At a press conference on April 9, Banko’s Music announced its music lineup for their inaugural Rock The Summer event at Nolan Field. The July 28th festival will feature legendary regional group and recording artist NRBQ, with preceding act Deep Banana Blackout, a nine piece rhythm and funk bank.

The event will benefit the recently formed Banko’s Music Foundation to benefit music students throughout the valley. Admission is free with a suggested $10 donation. Food trucks will participate along with a beer and wine garden.

ANSONIA – Aim D'Amaro, owner of Adventures in Music Productions, LLC is happy to announce that A.I.M Productions will be working with the newly formed non-profit organization Banko's Music Foundation, Inc and the City of Ansonia to bring Rock the Summer- A Concert for Music Education to Ansonia's Nolan Field in the summer of 2018.

A.I.M Productions, out of Shelton, CT specializes in producing music events, most notably their daylong Spring festival, Locapalooza which takes place in Bethany, CT every May.

The Banko's Music Foundation, is a non-profit organization formed by Joe Shapiro, the owner of Banko's Music with a mission of advocating for public school music education and awarding scholarships to students pursuing careers in music and music education.

In October of 2017, Banko's Music entered into an agreement with the City of Ansonia to co-present the formerly named Rock the Valley Concert. The Rock the Summer concert will take place on July 28, 2018 from 4pm - 10pm and will feature nationally touring bands providing the music. While this will be a free concert, there is a $5 suggested donation and all proceeds will go to Banko's Music Foundation so that they may continue their efforts. The music lineup is slated to be announced on April 9, 2018. 

In addition to live music on the stage, A.I.M Productions and Banko's are planning on having food trucks, a beer garden and a musical petting zoo, where adults and children will be able to play various instruments, at this event. 

Currently, both sponsorship opportunities for local businesses and applications for food trucks for this event are available.

Nature Center Offers Summer Programs

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, offers a variety of fun and educational programs in August.

 

BUTTERFLIES AND DRAGONFLIES – Aug. 6, 1 p.m.

Enjoy your Sunday afternoon at the park on our guided hike. Explore the Redwing Pond and our meadows for these beautiful six-legged, four-winged insects. 

The guide will show you our native butterfly gardens and teach you the benefits of native plants to our Connecticut butterflies and dragonflies.

FULL STURGEON MOON HIKE – Aug. 6, 7:30 p.m.

The Native American fishing tribes are given credit for the naming of this Moon, since sturgeon, a large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water, were most readily caught during this month. Join our staff on a hike in our meadows to watch as this reddish moon rises. Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Number of participants is limited, please pre-register. 
FEE: $3 per person. Wear appropriate footwear. 

MUSHROOM IDENTIFICATION FOR BEGINNERS – Aug. 12, 10 a.m.

Join a foraging family who hunt, photograph, identify, and love to eat the fungi in New England for a discussion and walk at the Ansonia Nature Center. 
We will dispel common myths, learn how to safely identify mushrooms with visual clues and guidebooks, and discuss mycophagy, the cooking and eating of wild mushrooms. 
After the lecture we’ll walk the property to search for wild fungi and put our newly learned skills to the test.
FEE: $5. Registration required.

ROCKS IN SPACE: Perseid Meteor Showers – Aug. 12, 7 p.m.

Come to Ansonia’s darkest location for some unusual night sky viewing with Bob Carruthers and the New Haven Astronomical Society.  In addition to a chance to see the annual meteor showers, there will be a short talk about meteorites. 
You and your family will get to view and touch meteorites from around the world. This night will be the peak of the showers! 
No need to bring anything except for warm clothing and a chair. Telescopes and binoculars are not necessary. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 
FREE. Registration required.

TURTLE TALK – Aug. 26, 1 p.m.

Anthony Pierlioni is Senior Director of the TurtleRoom, an online radio show dedicated to these fascinating reptiles and the people who love them. 
He’ll share his knowledge and some turtle species with us.

He is a member of the Turtle Survival Alliance, Turtle & Tortoise Preservation Group, New York Turtle & Tortoise Society, and New England Herpetological Society, as well as the online sites TurtleForum.com, TortoiseBoard.com, and TortoiseForum.org, where he can be found as Anthony P.

CATTAIL MAT WEAVING – Aug. 27, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Sept. 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Join Ranger Dan for a two-part series on cattails. Week 1 we will begin to collectively work on a mat made from the cattail reeds, and week 2 we will add the finishing touches to our mat. Learn how Native Americans from the Eastern Woodlands would use these reeds! 
Pack a bag lunch, and be prepared for swampy conditions.

This is a call to all of the runners who want something that is out of the ordinary! Ranger Dan will lead you through our 156-acre network of trails, while you burn off the weekend's extra calories. We guarantee that this FREE program is the best way to start off your week.

FAMILY ORGANIC GARDEN PROGRAM – Tuesdays, August through November

ANC will be continuing family-friendly activities in our organic garden. Learn about growing a variety of fruits and vegetables. Dress appropriately; keep in mind you will get water and soil on your clothing.
