Origami lesson, Tech Talks on tap at Derby Neck


Library lists April activities

Music and Movement
DERBY - Bring your little ones to Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. for Bedtime Music and Movement with Miss Kathi at 6:30 p.m. April 10.
Wear pajamas if you wish and bring along a favorite stuffed animal to sing and dance with.  No registration is required.

Chiropractic care
Learn of the benefits of Chiropractic Care at 6:30 p.m. April 11.
A licensed doctor will present all the aspects of good health resulting from regular chiropractic sessions.  Bring questions for the doctor. 

Video game tournament
Teens and tweens are invited to a video game tournament featuring Mario Kart on Wii at 2 p.m. April 16. Bring your skills and bring your friends for a fun afternoon. Prizes will be awarded to winners,  and there are free refreshments. No registration is required.

Read to therapy dogs
Youngsters are invited to read to therapy dog Jake from 3-4 p.m. April 14. Call ahead to register your child for a 15-minute session of reading.
From 6-7 p.m. April 17 Thor and Cosmo will be the featured dogs, and from 3-4 p.m. April 28 Grant will be the dog visiting the library.

Women's Forum
Women’s Forum, a monthly discussion group that focuses on women in the arts, politics, literature, history, and the like will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. April 15.

This session will focus on two women writers of short stories set in Maine, Ruth Moore and Virginia Chase.
Free copies of their two stories are available at the library.  Bring a light lunch; coffee and tea are provided for free.

Learn the art of origami
Children are invited for a free origami craft at 11 a.m. April 16.  Learn the Oriental art of paper folding. All  the skills taught in this program are suitable for children’s abilities.  Call ahead to register.

Tech Talks
Tech Talks, a monthly program explaining technology issues and uses for beginners will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. April 17.
This month we focus on the important issue of Internet Security, so bring your questions please.  Registration is required.

Writer's Round
Writer’s Round meets from 6:30-7:30 p.m. April 18.
This group works on its writing skills and evaluates each others’ pieces. All types of writing are welcomed: essays, fiction, on-line, poetry, and the like.

Current Events Club
Join us at 6:30 p.m. April 23 for a Current Events Club and discuss the news including the arts, politics, medicine, finance, and the like.
All are welcome to bring their ideas and opinions.

Pet safety topic of talk at Derby Neck Library

DERBY - Pet Safety will be the topic of a program offered by the Valley Parish Nurses and Griffin Hospital at Derby Neck Library at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 6.

This is one in a series of topics on health and safety presented to children and their parents. Caring for your pet safely will be discussed.
This a free program; a different topic will be offered the first Wednesday of each month. 

The library also has the following events scheduled for February:

Bedtime music
Bedtime Music and Movement for young children will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6. 

Join Miss Kathi for songs and dance the night away.  Pajamas are appropriate wear for children who attend, and they are encouraged to bring a favorite stuffed animal. 

Medicare Madness
Medicare Madness, a free presentation focusing on the changes to the Medicare system coming with the national Affordable Care Act will  be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7.

The presenter is Jeannette Lewis from Bankers Life and Casualty and Colonial Penn.  Come hear how any modifications may affect you as we approach 2014,  and bring your questions.  

Teen Movie Night

The library will host Teen Movie Night from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 12 with a feature film to be announced—watch for details in the library. 

Free refreshments served; bring your friends for some fun. 

Women's Forum
On Feb. 18 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. the library offers the Women’s Forum—a new club dedicated to topics by, for, and about women.
This month we discuss love poetry that explores relationships.  The moderator will bring in the materials, but attendees are encouraged to select their own contributions as well.
Bring a light lunch if you wish; coffee and tea are served for free.

Blues performance
At 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 join us for an evening Blues Music Performance.
Our musical duo consists of Mark Naftalin on piano and Mike Michaels on harmonic, guitar, and vocals.
These two talented musicians have performed with such greats as Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Duane Allman, Bill Wyman, and others.
Come bring your friends for good quality, live music. This is a free program for an adult audience.

Writers' Round
At 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 Writers’ Round meets. This is a workshop for writers of all genres—fiction, poetry, prose, drama, film scripts, etc. Come share your original works and hear what other writers are doing.

Current Events Club
The Current Events Club meets at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26. This group meets to discuss the news—including the arts, medicine, finance, politics and the like. An interesting evening always ensues.

Health Matters
Health Matters, a series of free talks by area experts on health topics, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 27. This series is presented by the Valley Parish Nurses and Griffin Hospital.
This month’s topic will be breast wellness. Bring a friend and bring your questions for an informative evening.

Christmas ornaments, canines in spotlight at Derby Neck Library

DERBY - The Current Events Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 27 at Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. This discussion group focuses on the news, including the arts, politics, medicine, and finance, among other topics.

Make a cloth ornament
On Nov. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. get in the Christmas Spirit by making a beautiful Christmas ornament.
This is a workshop in the art of folded and pinned quilting, which will result in a colorful cloth ornament, an example can be seen at the library.

Read to Thor and Cosmo
The St. Bernards, Thor and Cosmo, visit the library at 6 p.m. Nov. 30.
Each child visiting gets to read a story aloud to the dogs. To reserve a 15-minute session, call 203-734-1492.

Music and movement
Miss Kathi presents Bedtime Music and Movement at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5.  Bring your child to sing and dance with a favorite stuffed animal from home. For information call 203-734-1492.

Quilling class
From 6-8 p.m.,Dec. 12 join us to make a paper quilled Christmas ornament. This class guides you through the ancient art of quilling, using foldable paper strips.

Derby Neck Library lists October activities for all ages

DERBY - Pre-threes classes will be heldat 10 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. Oct. 8, 15, and 22.
Activities include stories, music, finger plays, nursery rhymes and puppets.

Computer classes
Beginners’ computer classes for adults are held each week October. On Mondays classes are held 6-7 p.m. and on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. For information call 203-734-1492 and ask for Bob.

Filmmaking fun
For area teens, the library offers a free filmmaking experience at 4 p.m. Tuesdays in October. All teens are invited to learn all aspects of filming, including script writing, acting, editing, directing.  For information call 203-734-1492 and ask for Andrew.

Culture Club
The Culture Club, a literary discussion group for adults, meets at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 15. Autumn poetry will be featured.
Bring a light lunch and enjoy free coffee or tea. Copies of the poems will be distributed at the meeting. For information call 203-734-1492 and ask for Pat.

Current Events

Halloween parties
Two Halloween parties will be held for area youngsters.
Toddlers will meet Oct. 31 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 31 to show off their costumes and receive treats.

Derby Neck plans teen movie, current events discussion

DERBY - A teen movie night will be held from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 26 at Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.
Teens are invited to come enjoy "The Avengers" in blu-ray on a big screen. A free light supper will be served during the showing.

Current Events Club
The Library's Current Events Club will meet to discuss the upcoming elections and related topics.  Join in a lively discussion from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 25.
