Griffin to host weight-loss seminar in Shelton

Griffin Hospital Bariatrics is hosting a free seminar on weight-loss options from 6-7 p.m. June 11 at Courtyard by Marriott in Shelton,780 Bridgeport Ave., Shelton.
 
Led by Dr. Rishi Ramlogan, this seminar is geared towards individuals who struggle with obesity. 
Griffin Hospital and Griffin Hospital Bariatrics offer an array of services for those looking to lose weight, including bariatric surgery options. 
Ramlogan will discuss these options, present the three types of surgeries he performs, and answer any questions.

Ansonia to host seminar on FOI law

    ANSONIA - Ansonia’s residents deserve the most open and transparent government possible. 
    To that end, the City of Ansonia will be conducting a “Sunshine Seminar” for the purpose of educating city officials on dealing with the intricacies of Connecticut’s Freedom of Information Act. 

    The seminar will be held at 7 p.m. April 1 in the Aldermanic Chambers of City Hall.
    
    The goal of this seminar is to ensure that Ansonia’s city officials are conducting the public’s business in the sunshine. 
    Issues to be addressed will include production of city documents, the use of executive session and proper noticing of public meetings.  Attendees will be provided with a helpful summary of FOI highlights and the floor will be open to questions.
    While this seminar will be geared towards to training of city officials, it is also open to the general public. 
    If you are an Ansonia resident who wants to learn about Connecticut’s “sunshine” laws and how to use them to keep track of local government activities, then please consider attending.
  
    This program will be conducted by John P. Marini, Corporation Counsel, and representatives from the Milford-based law firm of Berchem, Moses and Devlin.

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Library will present a seminar, Foundations of Investing, at 1 p.m. March 5.

The Foundations of Investing seminar will provide participants with information on bonds, stocks, mutual funds and much more.

The seminar will be offered by Robert L. Condon, Financial Advisor with Edward Jones Investments.

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Library will present Rules of the Road financial seminar at 11 a.m. Oct. 23.

The Rules of the Road will provide participants with 10 principles for sound investing and also discuss how to identify and avoid the most common investment mistakes.

Plan for college at Derby Public Library seminar

            DERBY - The Derby Public Library will host a College Planning Seminar from 6:30-8:30 p.m.  July 9.  
             It will be repeated from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. July 13. 
            Parents of high school students are invited to attend. Anthony Luther will present these one and a half hour classes, followed by a half-hour question and answer period.

             Two major topics covered include Academic Preparation and Financial Implications of Enrollment Management
            Some questions answered will include:  how to maximize the potential for gift-aid, grants, and scholarships; will colleges negotiate a lower price and when; what is the time-line for success and where to start; what are the new tax laws; and more. 
             The emphasis of these seminars are not only on reducing the cost of college, but also the time in the search and application process.  

             Hand-outs will be distributed, but participants are asked to bring a pen and pad for note-taking.

Derby library to host seminar for landlords

DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites landlords and prospective landlords to a  Landlord Rights and Rules Seminar at 6:30 p.m. May 20.

Presenter Susan  Kopec, 2013 Connecticut Magazine 5 Star Realtor with Carey & Guarrera Real Estate, is not only a real estate agent, but a landlord and property manager as well.

Topics covered will include protecting your rental assets, correct way to refund security deposits, tenant damage, proper way to increase rent, protecting yourself when leasing, tenant pets and
how to overcome tenant issues.

Handouts from the Department of Banking regarding lead disclosures, bank accounts, late payments and interest due will be available.

Refreshments will be provided. Registration is requested.
The program was postponed from an earlier date due to snow.
