Boys & Girls Club takes first place in academic decathlon

The Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley took first place in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Connecticut's 3^rd Annual Academic Decathlon.

Club members joined five other clubs from around the state at the Boys & Girls Club and Family Center of Bristol for a day of fun academic-themed events covering eight different school subjects. The five other clubs were from Stamford, Wakeman, Greenwich, Hartford, and the Bristol club.

The event with registration and lunch, which was partly sponsored by the Bristol ShopRite. The kids had grinders, chips, water, and an amazing cake. After an introduction and going over the expectations for the day, the kids were off to their first station. The stations included math, science, history, physical education, the arts, English, music, and critical thinking. Although each station had a specific educational subject, they were all about working together as a team and having fun. For example, at the science station the teams had to build the largest Lego structure, and the record for the day was 58 inches.

After each team competed at all eight stations, the day concluded with the announcement of the champion, and the winner of the coveted Academic Cup. The Bristol team came in third place, team Greenwich took home second place, and our Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley took first place.

ESPN plans to shoot commercial in Ansonia

ANSONIA — ESPN is coming to town.
Representatives of the cable television network in Bristol toured the Ansonia Copper & Brass facility twice in recent weeks, Alderman John Marini said.
A crew will return in mid-January to shoot a commercial for “NFL32,” an ESPN2 show.
