Parent workshops, story times planned at Derby Library

 DERBY - Registration is under way for the fall session of Family Place Parent/Child Workshops  at the Derby Public Library starting  Sept. 15.

    This innovative program is a time for families to share together with their 1-3 year old children.  
    Siblings age 5 and under are also welcome to attend.  
    This free, five-week session will be held on Mondays from 10-11:15 a.m.  
   The workshops feature puzzles, books, blocks, a craft, dramatic play and more.  
   Parents/caregivers will also be introduced to some of the many resources available to them to assist in the raising of their toddlers and have an opportunity to meet new friends in an educational and creative environment.

      Each workshop will focus on a different topic and will feature a professional from the community who will be available to discuss parenting questions and concerns.  
     Topics will include child development, nutrition, immunization and more.  Do not miss the opportunity to consult with experts on a no-fee basis while your child enjoys a wonderful play experience.  
      Space is limited; registration is requested.  
      Families are encouraged to attend all the workshops to obtain the full benefits of this program.

Story times

        

        Registration is also being held for the fall session of story times. This story time session will run from Sept. 10-Dec. 12.   
        The Library offers weekly, age-appropriate programs for children birth to 5 years old.    

        Beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 infants along with a parent/caregiver are invited to attend Baby and Me, which introduces our youngest patrons to the library and books through simple songs and rhymes, movement, board books and interaction with their caregiver.  
       The program will run for 20 minutes followed by play and conversation.

       Nursery Rhyme Time for toddlers 12 to 24 months old along with a caregiver will take place on at 10 a.m. Thursdays.  Finger plays, songs, movement, stories and rhymes will be included in this half-hour program.  The first class will be Sept. 11.

      Time for Twos begins at 11 a.m.  Sept. 11 with stories, songs, finger plays and a simple craft for children who are between 25 and 35 months olds along with a caregiver.  

     Children 3-5 years old are welcome to join us for stories, songs, instruments, literacy games and a craft at 10 a.m. Fridays beginning Sept. 12. 
       Preschool Story Time is designed to be an early school-readiness experience, an introduction to peer interaction and improved listening skills.   
      Children are encouraged to attend this story time independently while a caregiver remains in the Children’s Room area.

Griffin in Derby to hold Reiki workshops

DERBY - Griffin Hospital is offering area residents an opportunity to learn and hone their technique in Reiki, a body, mind, and spirit approach to medicine and healing, with Reiki Level 1 and Level 2 workshops this fall.

Reiki is a complementary healing method based on ancient healing practices. 

It involves the conscious direction of healing energy -- through the practitioner's hands - to the patient. 

When channeled properly, this energy promotes healing by relieving energy blockages to the body. The practice of Reiki is intended to bring balance to the energy fields thereby promoting healing on all levels.

Reiki Master Eileen Carino, RN-BC, and Joanne Halstead, RN, will host a Level 1 Reiki Workshop  from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 20 at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

The Reiki 1 Workshop teaches the basic concepts of Reiki, allowing ample time for hands-on practice.

The cost is $125, including certificate and Reiki book. 

Deadline for the Reiki Level 1 Workshop is Sept. 15.

Level 2 Workshop

The Level 2 Workshop will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 4 at the hospital. With the second level of Reiki, practitioners are given the ability to perform emotional healing, to learn three of the four Usui Reiki sacred symbols and to enhance their healing abilities.

Reiki 2 attunement intensifies the energies introduced at Reiki 1. Participants must have completed Reiki Level 1 and a minimum of six months Reiki practice. 

Cost for the program is $100 (plus a $25 book fee for participants without one). 

Deadline for the Reiki Level 2 workshop is Sept. 29.

DERBY - A free workshop series at Griffin Hospital aims to help individuals with an ongoing health conditions or those caring for a loved one with an ongoing health condition get their lives back.

Sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Social Services Aging Services Division, Connecticut Department of Public Health and Griffin Hospital, the Live Well Workshop will be held July 31, Aug. 7, 16, 21, 28, and Sept. 4 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the hospital, 130 Division St.

The workshops will provide health information and strategies to help those with chronic conditions like diabetes, depression, heart disease, arthritis, pain and anxiety increase their energy and take control of their health issue.

Ansonia Library to host craft workshops

ANSONIA - Illustrator and recycling artist Tracy Viverretta from Tracyville will conduct recycling craft workshops at the Ansonia Library from 1-2:30 p.m. every other Friday starting July 11.

Griffin in Derby to offer workshops for diabetics

DERBY - The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host two free presentations about fall risk and prevention for diabetics Jan. 14 at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

According to statistics, women 60 years and older with diabetes are 1½ times more likely to have fallen in the previous year and two times more likely to have falls with injuries than women without diabetes. 

Diane Betkoski will present “Helping Older People with Diabetes Reduce the Risk of Falling” to help diabetics and their caregivers learn why older adults with diabetes are at increased risk of falls and how to reduce this fall risk.

The presentations will be 2:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Childbirth Classroom A and at 6:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Dining Room. 
Ask for directions to these rooms at the  front desk.

The Diabetes Education & Support Group meets September - June on the second Tuesday of each month to discuss the management of diabetes, its challenges and day-to-day dietary concerns. 
 All diabetics and their families are welcome to attend. No registration is required. 
Free valet parking is available for the 2:30 p.m. session.
