Troop 3 to hold annual Ed Strang Day in Derby
DERBY - Calling all boys
and girls of the Valley!
Archery, rope bridge and ice cream-making are a
few of the free activities to be offered on the Derby Green from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 as part of Housatonic Council Boy Scout Troop 3’s Ed
Strang Day.
The event has been held annually since 1994, when the city
of Derby welcomed home actor Brian Dennehy to honor Scouting pioneer
Edmund D. Strang, Dennehy’s former Cubmaster.
Additional activities including Pinewood Derby racing, obstacle course
and a fireman’s challenge will be
offered to introduce youths to the adventures of Scouting.
There will be a Giant Tag Sale at the Derby Second Congregational Church on Elizabeth Street.
Proceeds to support
Troop 3 Scouts participating in a three-week cross country camping adventure in 2014, during the troop’s 100th anniversary year.
Representatives will be
on hand to provide information for free membership to Cub Scout Pack 3,
Boy Scout Troop 3 and Venture Crew 33 will be available to all eligible
youths who complete an application with a
parent or guardian present.
Assistance is also available for providing
Scout uniforms.
Current Scouts from throughout the
Valley are also invited to attend in uniform and participate
in the free activities.

Derby to hold summer concerts
DERBY - The Cultural Commission's summer concert series will begin Wednesday.
All concerts are at 7 p.m. on the Green, with the exception of the July 3 performance. It will be on lower Elizabeth Street before the Derby-Shelton fireworks display.
The schedule follows:
July 3 - Juicy Grapes - rock
July 9 - Kathy Thompson - funk
July 16 - Frank Porto - big band
July 23 - Tracy Delucia - country
July 30 - Dr. YaYa - Mardi Gras
Aug. 6 - I'liguri - Italian
Aug. 13 - Mark Lanzieri - Sinatra
Aug. 20 - Larry Ayce Band - country
Aug. 27 - The Ascensions - rock

Derby lights tree on Green with Santa's help

DERBY - The Cultural Commission sponsored the city's annual tree lighting Friday night on the Green. Kids of all ages were on hand for the festivities.
Christmas songs and carols were performed by St. Mary-St. Michael School chorus as well as the combined chorus from Derby middle and high schools.

Derby to hold Christmas tree lighting Friday
DERBY - The Cultural Commission will present the city’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting at 6 p.m. Friday on the Derby Green.
There will be carolers and a visit from Santa Claus.
Hot chocolate will be for sale. Bring a new, unwrapped toy for TEAM’s Toys For Kids drive and get a free hot chocolate.
