Volunteer counselors sought for MDA camp in Hebron

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is searching for men  looking for a rewarding and memorable experience this summer to join their summer camp.

Volunteer counselors are needed to assist young people with neuromuscular diseases and help them enjoy a fun-filled week at MDA summer camp, which will take place from Aug. 3-9 at Camp Hemlocks in Hebron.

With less than 60 days until camp begins volunteers are needed to sign up now.

There has been an overwhelming response from female applicants, so at this time, only male applicants are asked to apply.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and able to lift and care for a young person between the ages of six and 17.
          As a volunteer counselor, one will have the opportunity to become a close companion to a camper affected by neuromuscular disease and help them with daily activities such at eating, bathing and dressing. Counselors will also assist campers with recreational activities such as arts and crafts, swimming, and adapted sports.

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and far-reaching professional and public health education.

Volunteering as a counselor at MDA summer camp is a rewarding and life-changing experience.

Registration set for Ansonia Youth Football, Cheerleading

ANSONIA - In-person registration for Ansonia Youth Football and Cheerleading will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. June 3 at the Ansonia Armory, 12 State St.

Registration may also be done online at www.ansoniacoppers.com.

Registration is open for the following divisions:

Flag Football, grades 1-4, cost $100; Tackle Football, grades 4-8, cost $175;

Mighty Mites Cheerleading, ages 5-7, cost $125; Cheerleading, grades 3-8, cost $175. There is also a new division this year, the AYC Contender Division for cheerleading, which is open to youths in kindergarten through 8^th grade with either cognitive or physical disabilities. 
The cheerleading program includes competitions offered at the local, state, regional and national level.

Payments may be made by money order, checks and credit cards. Cash is not accepted.

The fees for each program do not include $50 refundable volunteer and $50 fundraising deposits required.

'The Taste' on tap at Warsaw Park

My co-worker Jean Falbo-Sosnovich has a story in the paper today about an event this Saturday in Ansonia that will no doubt be a lot of fun.

The second annual wine, beer and food "tasting" event benefits girls' softball in Seymour.

Sounds like a win-win.

Seymour Rec to offer basketball, Zumba, chess

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Recreation Department is offering three upcoming activities:

Men’s Over 30 Basketball Pick-up Game nights will begin Feb. 13 from 7-9  p.m. at Bungay School gym.

All interested people must pre-register at the Seymour Recreation Department office.

The program, for Seymour residents only, will run for eight weeks. Cost is $25.

Zumba class
A Level I Zumba Class will start March 4 and run for six weeks. Class time is 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Bungay School gym.
Ages 14 and up are encouraged to attend.
 Cost is $40 per person,  $70 for two people from same family and $10 for a one night drop-in.

Anyone from surrounding Valley towns is welcomed. To register call the Seymour Recreation Department,  203-888-0406.


Youth chess
A Co-ed Youth Chess Class for grades 2 through 6 will begin March 5 and run for six weeks.
Class time is from 4-5 p.m. at the Seymour Recreation Department classrooms. Cost is $40 per child. No experience necessary and all equipment will be provided by instructor.
