Malloy’s proposed cuts leave Valley volunteer firefighters in tough situation

Valley lawmakers are fighting to stop proposed cuts to the state’s fire training schools, including a $35,283 cut that would severely impact training for Valley volunteer firefighters, potentially causing tuition to skyrocket by more than 300 percent.
An overall proposed cut of $743,899 in the state budget would affect the state’s nine fire training schools, cutting money for operational costs, instructor’s payroll, utility costs and facilities maintenance.

Shelton firefighter wins kudos for rescue

Shelton volunteer firefighter Chris Jones points to where he saw an 'orange glow' coming from a window on the first floor of a house on Howe Avenue.

I didn't want to let the day go by without giving a huge shout out to Shelton volunteer firefighter Chris Jones.

On Wednesday Jones happened to see a fire in a multi-family house on Howe Avenue in Shelton.

Without a second thought he ran to the house and led four residents to safety.
A fifth occupant, who was in the apartment where the fire started, died Thursday morning.

 
Jones not only showed bravery and quick thinking, he demonstrated for all to see his dedication to the city he calls home.

Ziti dinner slated in Derby to benefit firefighter

DERBY - A ziti dinner to honor John Conte, Brother Member of R.K.F.F.M.C. Battalion 2, North End Hose Company No. 3, West Haven Fire Department, and Hilltop Hose Company No. 5, Ansonia, will be held 4-8 p.m. Dec. 15.

The benefit will be held at the Catholic War Veterans Post 1562 building, 112 Derby Ave. (Route 115).

Tickets are $10, adults; $5, children; free for children under 4. There will be raffle prizes and a 50/50 raffle will be held. (Raffle prizes also will be accepted at the door)
Contact a member of the RKFFMC for tickets. Tickets also will be available at the door.

Additional parking will be provided at the old Housatonic Lumber Co. lot on Water Street, off of Main Street. A shuttle will provide transportation to the CWV Post home.

Please come out to help John, as he has been battling cancer for the past several months. 
He has been involved with the North End Hose Company, the West Haven Fire Explorers and Hilltop Hose Company No. 5 for many years. He is also a past employee of AMR Bridgeport.
