Griffin to Host Presentation on Back Pain

DERBY - Griffin Hospital will offer a free presentation on lower back pain at 5:45 p.m. March 12.

Spine Surgeon Chanakya K. Jandhyala, MD, will present “The Lowdown on Low Back Pain,” an interactive discussion on the causes of low back pain, how it is diagnosed, and the conservative, interventional, and surgical treatment techniques and approaches.

Jandhyala will be available at the end of the presentation to answer any questions from attendees.

Refreshments will be served.

Learn How to Manage Pain

DERBY - Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., Derby, will host a free talk on pain management on Thurs., May 24 at 6 p.m.

 

Pain medicine expert Dr. Sandeep Johar will lead “Managing Pain for a Better Quality of Life,” an open discussion about the methods to help restore and improve quality of life by decreasing pain and restoring the maximum level of function and independence. Dr. Johar has a multi-disciplinary medical background in interventional pain management, sports medicine and emergency medicine, enabling him to collaborate with our other specialists to ensure patients have a comprehensive treatment plan.

 

The talk is part of Griffin Hospital's Healthy U education series, which features Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics. Light refreshments will be served.

Bike Night at Valley Diner to Benefit 3-Year Old

Volunteers Needed for MS, Insomnia Study

DERBY - The Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center and Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Center, both located at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., Derby, are seeking volunteers for a study on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and insomnia.

 

The study will involve using mindfulness meditation to address insomnia. Volunteers will receive $200.

 

To participate, volunteers must have a diagnosis of MS and suffer from chronic insomnia, come to Griffin Hospital for three assessments throughout the study, be willing to attend a weekly, two-hour training session for eight weeks and wear a Fitbit activity monitor (provided to volunteers).

Urgent Care Coming to Derby

DERBY - MedExpress Urgent Care, a neighborhood health care provider, will open its first two neighborhood medical centers in Connecticut this summer.

The centers, in Derby at 68 Division St. and Meriden at 875 E. Main St., will open on July 5 and August 9, respectively. As a gift to each community, both locations will offer free sports physicals for patients ages five and up for two weeks after the centers open.

The new neighborhood medical centers will care for people of all ages, providing urgent care, employer health services, and basic wellness and prevention services. Walk-in treatment is available for everyday illness and injury, including more advanced offerings such as X-rays, IVs, labs, minor surgery, stitches, and treatment for broken bones, sprains, and strains. Local employers can use MedExpress for employer health services including workers’ compensation, injury care, pre- and ongoing employment screenings, physicals, and regulatory exams. Basic wellness and prevention services offered at MedExpress include sports physicals, routine physicals, and immunizations to help Derby and Meriden residents maintain good health.
