Ansonia EMTs Go Above & Beyond in Heat Wave

ANSONIA - ARMS member Krystle Bieber did a little something extra special today. While on a call last week, she attended to a patient in an extremely hot second floor apartment for an unrelated medical issue. The woman’s air conditioner had broken and the heat was unbearable in the apartment.
Today, Krystle and her brother Billy (also an ARMS member) delivered an air conditioner to this woman that they had at their home and wasn’t being used. Billy installed the unit in the woman’s window for her and got the cool air flowing; she was so appreciative.
Just another example of the amazing and selfless people we have working here.

Learn How to Manage Pain

DERBY - Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., Derby, will host a free talk on pain management on Thurs., May 24 at 6 p.m.

 

Pain medicine expert Dr. Sandeep Johar will lead “Managing Pain for a Better Quality of Life,” an open discussion about the methods to help restore and improve quality of life by decreasing pain and restoring the maximum level of function and independence. Dr. Johar has a multi-disciplinary medical background in interventional pain management, sports medicine and emergency medicine, enabling him to collaborate with our other specialists to ensure patients have a comprehensive treatment plan.

 

The talk is part of Griffin Hospital's Healthy U education series, which features Griffin Hospital medical experts and community partners providing trusted health information and answers to questions on a wide range of topics. Light refreshments will be served.

Learn First Aid for Fluffy & Fido

DERBY - People and Animals Working in Spirit (PAWS), Griffin Hospital’s pet therapy program, and Connecticut Emergency Animal Response Service (EARS) will host a Pet First Aid Class on Sat., Jan. 27 at the hospital, 130 Division St., Derby.

 

The EARS Team will be at the hospital from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. From 11 a.m.-noon, the team will talk about responding to medical emergencies and technical rescues involving animals in the community. The Pet First Aid class will be from noon- 1 p.m., featuring a multimedia presentation and hands-on learning, followed by a Q&A session with the EARS team.

 

Registration is required, but this program is open to all ages. Though the class is about pets, participants are asked to leave their pets at home so they can focus on the hands-on work and demonstrations.

 

The suggested donation is $10 a person for the class. All contributions will help EARS continue its pet response mission. To RSVP email info@earsct.org or call (203) 941-EARS.

 

EARS is a team of volunteer first responders trained for rapid-response to "all-hazard" animal emergencies within Connecticut. The organization focuses on disaster response, emergency transport, technical rescue and training pet owners how to respond to an emergency.

Free "Mini-Med School" Offered

 

DERBY- Griffin Hospital is accepting registrations for its free, 10-week “Mini-Med School” course that begins Thurs., Sept. 14.

 

Specifically designed for the layperson with little or no medical background, Mini-Med School provides a unique opportunity to gain a greater understanding of how the human body works, insight into common disorders of the various organ systems, as well as information about disease prevention.

 

This free course will be conducted over 10 consecutive weekly sessions. Griffin Hospital physicians serve as faculty, covering a wide range of topics, including: Anatomy and Physiology; Primary Care; Cardiology; Endocrinology; Orthopedics; Pulmonology; Gastroenterology; Nephrology; Neurology; Oncology and Hematology; Otolaryngology; Ophthalmology; Gynecology; Urology; Rheumatology; Dermatology; and General Surgery. Each weekly session will be divided into two hour-long presentations on different medical topics, with a refreshment break between presentations and ample time for questions and answers.

 

The program meets Thursdays from 6:30–9 p.m. in the hospital’s Meditation and Learning Center, 130 Division Street in Derby. The Mini-Med School will culminate with a “graduation” ceremony for participants on November 16. The course is comprehensive and the knowledge base is cumulative, so those participants who attend all sessions will gain the most benefit.

Train at Griffin for a Medical Career

DERBY - The Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers, at 300 Seymour Avenue, Suite 206 in Derby, is offering classes for its fall Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Technician (PCT) and Phlebotomy programs.

 

The evening session for the CNA program starts Sept. 11, and the day PCT program and the Phlebotomy program begin Sept 12. The accelerated CNA course offers students an affordable and condensed six-week schedule with classes Monday through Thursday from 5-9 p.m. Course content includes infection control, legal and ethical responsibilities, communications, body mechanics, moving and positioning residents, personal care skills, nutrition, measuring vital signs, and restorative care. The program’s clinical experience is at a long term stay facility and Griffin Hospital from 5-10 p.m. for a total of 40 hours.

 

After successfully completing the course and clinical experience, students will be qualified to take the certification exam for a Nursing Assistant in Connecticut. The CNA course tuition fee includes the course book, CPR training, and malpractice insurance coverage for the clinical rotation.

 

The 16-week PCT program requires students to attend practical training on Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and have the option to take the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Phlebotomy classes either during the day from 9 a.m.-noon or during the evening from 6-9 p.m. The PCT program offers ample hands-on training and opportunities for practical experience in the school's fully equipped mock hospital room and during the 160 hours of clinical experience. The course tuition includes textbook, malpractice insurance, CPR certification, and national certification.

 

The 13-week Phlebotomy program holds classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with a daytime option of 9 a.m.-noon or an evening option of 6-9 p.m. The course tuition includes a 40-hour internship, national certification, lab coats, CPR certification, malpractice insurance and textbook.

Dworkin Promoted to New Position at Griffin Hospital

DERBY -Griffin Hospital in Derby is proud to announce the promotion of Adam Dworkin, of Bethany, to the newly created senior management position of Vice President, Operations - Integrated Medical Group.

 

Dworkin joined Griffin in 2011 as the Executive Director of Griffin Faculty Physicians (GFP), subsidiary of Griffin Hospital. He previously served as Director of Marketing for a large Connecticut law firm following distinguished service in the U.S. Navy as surface warfare officer, mission planner and instructor for which he received numerous awards and commendations.

 

Dworkin earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Vanderbilt University, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts, and a Juris Doctor from University of Connecticut School of Law.

 

In his six years at Griffin, Dworkin has facilitated the expansion of GFP into a multi-specialty group practice with more than 50 physicians, 100 support staff, and an annual operating budget in excess of $19 million. GFP providers now include highly accomplished medical and surgical specialists, Physician Assistants (PAs) and Advance Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) practicing inpatient medicine, adult primary care, geriatrics, gastroenterology, cardiology, endocrinology , general surgery, breast surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and urology in the hospital and in more than a dozen community-based office locations throughout Griffin’s seven-town primary service area, as well as Southbury, Naugatuck and Hamden.

Gentile Participates in Job Growth Forum

HARTFORD - State Rep. Linda Gentile, D-Ansonia, Derby, Friday participated in an information forum at the Commission on Economic Competitiveness focused on developing a cluster of jobs in the medical and personal health field.

“I believe that one of the most important things that I can do as a legislator and policymaker is look for opportunities and ways to create jobs and improve our economy. That is why I attended and participated in this forum focusing on the creation of jobs in the medical field,” Gentile said.

The meeting discussed establishing and maintaining an Asset Inventory across the state to identify Connecticut organizations and companies working in bioscience, biopharma, biotech, genomics, clinomics, epigenomes, pharmacogenomics, and related fields.

By identifying these organizations, the state can promote business development through competitions that will incentivize firms or individuals located anywhere in the world to come into Connecticut. Furthermore, the state will be able to retain talent and invite and recruit experts in the fields of precision medicine and personalized health work in CT to build a critical mass of talent.

The economic impact of building a cluster and critical mass around precision medicine will have strong and positive effects cross the state.

The Commission on Economic Competitiveness works to analyze the implications of state tax policy on state business and industry and to develop policies that promote economic growth.
