5K Run/Walk for Drug Awareness

  

Shelton, CT (June 2019) Fight Against Drugs Everywhere (FADE) will hold its fifth annual drug awareness 5k run/walk on June 27 at 5:30 pm at the Shelton Pavilion & Riverwalk. All proceeds will benefit the BHcare’s Alliance for Prevention and Wellness (APW).

This year’s event will feature guest speaker John Lally and the “Today I Matter Project.” The event will conclude with a candlelight remembrance ceremony. Names will be read of loved ones lost to overdose. People can submit names at the event to be read aloud. 

Drug overdoses and drug overdose deaths continue to rise at an alarming rate. More than 120 people die every day in the U.S. from an opioid overdose. Both prescription painkillers and heroin are contributing to this phenomenon. The overall drug deaths in Connecticut have nearly tripled over the past seven years, from 357 in 2012 to 1,018 in 2018. 

FADE 5k run/walk is being held to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic and overdoses, acknowledge and support the grief felt by families and friends who have lost a loved one, provide hope to families who have a loved one struggling with a substance use disorder, and to provide local prevention and treatment resources. Food Trucks event in Shelton to benefit PCRC

SHELTON - The Parent Child Resource Center will host “Food Trucks in the Valley” from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Shelton River Walk to benefit programs and services that serve children and families.

Who: This is an open event.

What: This event is celebrating “Back-to-School” with free admission, while 10 percent of the proceeds from each vendor go towards PCRC’s programs and services. We currently have 12 food trucks confirmed, including healthy options. The PCRC Beverage Table will serve beer, soda, juice and water.

Relay in Shelton fights cancer, raises spirits

SHELTON - On Saturday my husband Ralph and I enjoyed the camaraderie of the Circle of Friends support group during the survivors' luncheon before the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life at the Shelton Riverwalk.

I tried to get a photo when people were chatting - and not chewing.

   And there was cake!

Kudos to members of the committee, emergency personnel, Griffin Hospital Center for Cancer Care staff and all who worked hard to plan the luncheon and opening ceremony, and sponsored events to make the Relay for Life a success.

I'm sure I speak for all survivors when I say thank you for everything.

This was just one of the many inspirational signs along the way.

I applaud those hearty souls who stayed there at the field overnight. I'm sure that's a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

My husband Ralph and I will be heading to the Shelton Riverwalk in a little while to be part of the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life.

Looking forward to seeing the ladies who are part of Griffin Hospital's Circle of Friends breast cancer support group.

American Legion walks in Shelton, West Haven to benefit hospital

American Legion Department of Connecticut’s Second and Third District, including all of the Legion Posts in New Haven and Fairfield County, invite the public to join in a Walk-a-thon to benefit the Connecticut Children’s Hospital. 

The Second and Third District in conjunction with the American Legion Department of Connecticut are sponsoring the Kids Walk to raise money for Connecticut Children's Hospital. 

The walks will take place simultaneously at 10 a.m. April 19.   Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

The Second District walk will be held on the West Haven Beach Boardwalk, and the Third District walk will step off at Veterans Memorial Park on the Riverwalk in Shelton. 

The day's event will include a one to three-mile walk. 
Bottled water and snacks will be provided for walkers. T-shirts will be awarded to walkers with $25 or more in sponsor donations.    

Along with the general public, alumni of American Legion programs are encouraged to join in the walk.  
Legion program alumni are men and women who have benefited from programs such as Boys State, Girls State, Legion Baseball, youth groups sponsored by the Legion.   

All pledges and donations to the Kids Walk will benefit the Connecticut Children’s Hospital.   
The walk will also be an opportunity for Legion Program Alumni to catch up with old friends.  All are welcome to attend.

Derby-Shelton Rotary to host Hoptoberfest fundraiser

The Derby‐Shelton Rotary Club will host HOPTOBERFEST, a new fund‐raising event, from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Shelton Riverwalk.
Hoptoberfest will feature over 50 craft beers and a chicken wing competition from local restaurants.
The People’s Choice votes will award the “King of the Wing.”

Net proceeds will support the Derby‐Shelton Rotary Club’s college scholarship program, elementary school literacy programs and beautification efforts in downtown Derby and Shelton.

Harvest House V in Shelton to help feed Valley needy

SHELTON - Harvest House will be built Saturday and Sunday at the Riverwalk, 100 Canal St.

Valley United Way’s Harvest House is a biannual festival during which a 400-square-foot house is constructed out of shelves and filled with more than 100,000 nonperishable food items.
The food that is collected is distributed to food banks serving Ansonia, Derby, Seymour, Shelton, and Oxford.

This year marks its fifth year and as a result of the past four Harvest Houses, over a million meals have been provided to Valley families in need.
Harvest House is compared to a classic barn raising in that it utilizes the collective action of the community for the common good.
Families in need, in turn, are able to thrive rather than go hungry.
This is a festival where people can do something good for the community and have fun at the same time.

Activities for all ages
This year’s Harvest House will feature even more events than before.
There are lots of great activities for all such as a visit from animal friends from the Beardsley Zoo, face painting, arts and crafts, a comedy magic show, touch a truck, moon bounce, hula hoops, karate, dance, fitness and acting performances, Cub Scout Olympics, and live music.
A “CAN”tastic Construction Competition will be held where teams can enter structures built out of non-perishable food items.

The Girl Scouts, Liquid Lunch, and the Shelton and Valley volunteer fire departments and ambulance corps will be serving a Hot Diggity Dog and Harvest Soup Supper as well as a Pancake Breakfast. Learn more about Harvest House at www.valleyunitedway.org.

SHELTON - Thursday marked the official “Fifty Day” mark until we build Harvest House V. 

Harvest House is a bi-annual effort in its 10^th year that is organized by the Valley United Way Corporate Volunteer Council.

A 400 square-foot house is constructed and filled with more than 100,000 nonperishable food items in an effort to stock Valley-based food banks serving the Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour, and Shelton. 

Harvest House V is scheduled for Sept. 28 and 29 on the Shelton Riverwalk.

Student teams from Emmett O’Brien Technical High School’s computer-aided drafting and design and carpentry departments help plan and construct the structures of the Harvest House, in which the donated food is held.

Make a difference in the towns in which you work and live. Join hundreds of corporate volunteers working towards making a collective impact in the Valley community. 

Volunteers have an opportunity to: organize food drives, serve on committees supporting the event, foster corporate team-building initiatives and most importantly, help local families in need.

Organize a food drive, donate coupons, or volunteer your time and your voice to help make this project a success. 

 Nonperishables are needed. All food collected will be distributed to local pantries in the Valley towns.

Shelton Legion Post 16 to hold benefit walk Saturday

SHELTON - Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 of Shelton, in conjunction with the American Legion Department of Connecticut’s Third District, is sponsoring a Walk-a-Thon to raise money for Connecticut Children's Hospital. 

The walk will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Veteran’s Park on the Riverwalk downtown. Registration and donations will' be accepted at the Farmer's Market that morning.
Those interested in participating may call adjutant Al Sabetta, 203-924-0898 for information. 

   The event will include a two-to three-mile walk. Bottled water will be provided for participants.

  Post 16 meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month.

  Any veteran interested in joining is encouraged to visit the Post at 295 Bridgeport Ave. or call      203-924-9887.

The American Legion family sponsors six Connecticut Children's Medical Center Walkathons to be held Saturday: at Deep River's Valley Regional High School track, Montville's Fort Shantok State Park, West Haven's boardwalk, Shelton's Riverwalk, Bristol's Rockwell Park and Putnam's St. Marie-Greenhalgh Field.

The first 20 walkers at each site, who turn in at least $25 will receive a Irish green "Kids Walk" T-shirt.

All those who pledge and turn in at least $500 will receive a Final Steps Polo Shirt at a later date. This is the 22nd year the American Legion's state organization has sponsored this annual three-mile Kids Walk.

Rotary's pavilion project progresses in Shelton

 I received a press release Monday from Lauren Kazzi, vice president of image for the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club, about the progress being made on construction of a pavilion at the Shelton Riverwalk.
The Rotarians have raised funds for the project, which is a joint effort between the club and the city of Shelton.
I was there for the ceremonial groundbreaking in November 2010.

The Shelton Riverwalk's latest project is almost finished. The Derby/Shelton Rotary Club, in partnership with the City of Shelton, is building a large pavilion for public use. The pavilion will be dedicated in memory of state Rep. Richard O. Belden, who died in August 2007.
The design and construction phases of the project are being overseen by Jim Tate of Shelton, who also designed the Farmers' Market nearby.

The Shelton Economic Development Corporation has also played an important role in keeping the project moving forward.
Heavy work will continue on the building until mid-July. The pavilion will be available for use sometime in September, after all of the finishing touches have been made to the landscaping.

I was amazed at how much work was completed in three weeks.
I took the photo of the foundation (below) June 2 while attending the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life at the Riverwalk.

Truth be told, I forgot to post it.

The Rotary Club and city officials involved with the construction should be commended. The pavilion will be a great venue for community gatherings in the not-too-distant future.
