ANSONIA — Students and families in Ansonia are invited to attend the 2nd Annual Summer Reading Rocks, which will be held on the property of Christ Episcopal Church across from the Ansonia Library on South Cliff Street this Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is free of charge.

Many of last year’s offerings will be returning this year, including live entertainment, traveling performers, a picnic lunch, a petting zoo, face painters and a balloon artist, a self-contained soft play obstacle course, and free raffles.

A backpack, water bottle and summer reading books will be available for Ansonia students who register during the event. More than a dozen local organizations providing services to Ansonia residents will be on hand to distribute free information.

The main stage will feature the following performers: Lynn’s Sing A Long at 11 a.m.; Author Ried Kaplan, who will read his book, “Let’s Eat Together” at noon; Al DeCant, the singing principal, shortly after 1:00 p.m.; and magician Danny Magic at 2 p.m. Raffles will be held at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The Ansonia Library is co-sponsoring Reading Rocks with the school district. Funding is being provided by the State of Connecticut through grants awarded to Ansonia Public Schools.

SHELTON - TEAM Inc's 15th annual Festival of Trees will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Nov. 17 and Sunday Nov. 18 at the Shelton Senior Center, 81 Wheeler St.

 

The event will features raffles of decorated trees, wreaths and baskets, along with craft vendors, pictures with Santa and kids' holiday crafts.

VFW to Host Car Show

SEYMOUR- VFW Post 12084 will host a Car Show from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 26 at Colonial Tavern in Oxford, 25 Hawley Rd.

Featured will be classic cars, trucks, bike, antique military equipment and more.

All vehicles are welcome. Registration is $15 for car vendors and $40 for craft vendors. Military vehicles are free, but please call ahead to reserve a space.

Proceeds will benefit local veterans.

The show will also feature a 50/50 raffle, prizes, live music, food and crafts.

Admission is $4 for adults; $2 for seniors and free for children under 8, or $10 a carload.

SEYMOUR - Great Hill Hose Company, 140 Botsford Road, will host its 30th annual Easter Egg Hunt from 1-4 p.m. Sunday. 

Children will be divided into four age groups:

Group A - 2 years & under
Group B - 3 to 5 years old
Group C - 6 to 7 years old
Group D - 8 to 10 years old

There will be an Easter basket raffle; check your eggs for special prizes. 

The event will start promptly at 1 p.m., rain/snow or shine.

Children 4 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Free refreshments will be served.

Wine Tasting, Shopping Extravaganza on Tap

SEYMOUR- Join Treasured Time for its 5^th Annual

Holiday Shopping Extravaganza and its Red, White and Rosé Wine Tasting fundraiser on Thursday, Nov. 16 at The Inn at Villa Bianca in Seymour.

 

The Shopping Extravaganza will be from 5-9 pm. For a $5 donation, visitors can do all their holiday shopping in one place with more than 40 vendors, and a free ticket for raffle prizes.

 

The evening will include a visit from Santa from 5:15-8:15 p.m. DJ Phyllis Kaplan from Lone Wolf Productions will be playing songs to spread the holiday spirit, and there will be a free gift wrapping table.

 

The Wine Tasting will be 6-8:30 p.m. For a $50 donation, participants can take their palate on a journey around the U.S., sampling a variety domestic wines, beers and ciders. Admission also includes hors d'oeuvres, a pasta station and dessert. Combo rates are available with two tickets for $80.

 

The Wine Tasting will also feature unique silent auction items and a “wine pull game” in which $10 purchases a wrapped “mystery” bottle of wine. There will also be live music by Paula Pettinella and homemade cupcakes with a boozy twist by Sugar and Spice Cupcakes.

 

The Wine Tasting is held in partnership with GLENRO Spirit Shoppe in Monroe. Both events are sponsored by the Hampton Inn, Shelton and Jason Oberhand, DDS Family Dentistry, Trumbull.

After suffering through an unhappy childhood, and losing her parents and one of her brothers, Eleanor figured out where she fit in and could make a difference.  She grew up and became an American politician.  The longest-serving First Lady of the United States, she was the first presidential spouse to hold press conferences, write a syndicated newspaper column, and speak at a national convention.  Eleanor advocated for expanded roles for women in the workplace, the civil rights of African Americans and Asian Americans, and the rights of World War II refugees.  She became one of the first delegates to The United Nations.
