THC to Hold Veterans' Benefit

DERBY - The Hops Company, Connecticut’s only authentic beer garden, will host its 3rd annual “Road Home for the Holidays” charitable event from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 30. 

 

Partnering with Two Roads Brewery for the third year, the event will be a memorable night filled with fun, food, great beer, games, raffles and contests including ugly holiday sweater contest to benefit military service men and women. 

 

The Hops Company and Two Roads will donate $1 from the sale of each Two Roads pint of beer to the Fisher House Foundation.  The Fisher House Foundation reunites families of injured veterans while they’re in the hospital. It uses donations to build large, multi-family homes where loved ones can stay without charge while their heroes heal. For more details, please check out: www.fisherhouse.org.

 

Bobby Wheeler will be playing live music from 9 p.m. until midnight.

VFW to Host Car Show

SEYMOUR- VFW Post 12084 will host a Car Show from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 26 at Colonial Tavern in Oxford, 25 Hawley Rd.

Featured will be classic cars, trucks, bike, antique military equipment and more.

All vehicles are welcome. Registration is $15 for car vendors and $40 for craft vendors. Military vehicles are free, but please call ahead to reserve a space.

Proceeds will benefit local veterans.

The show will also feature a 50/50 raffle, prizes, live music, food and crafts.

Admission is $4 for adults; $2 for seniors and free for children under 8, or $10 a carload.

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Town Clerk’s Office is reminding residents of Seymour, CT, to submit the names of servicemen and women serving in the military.

Their complete service address should be submitted to the Seymour Town Clerk including their Seymour home address and the name of the person submitting the request.

The Town of Seymour would like all Seymour servicemen and women currently serving in the military to receive a Christmas check from the Richard R. Pearson Memorial Fund.

Food Truck Festival Oct. 15 in Derby

 

DERBY - The 2nd annual Food Truck Fest hosted by the Derby High School Post Prom Committee will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, October 15 at Lou DeFilippo Field at the Ryan  Sports Complex on Chatfield Street.

The event is being held in conjunction with the Military Appreciation football game- Derby High School V. Oxford High School at 2 p.m. There will be eight food trucks and a handful of table vendors. Raffles and the decades football alumni will be on hand to reunite with others and to reminisce.

 

There is free parking, and gate charge is $5 from 1-3 p.m. only. Those with a Military ID get into the event free all day.

 

Proceeds from the food truck festival will benefit post prom activities, while proceeds from the football game will benefit local military families. The event is being done in conjunction with the Derby High School Athletics Dept.

Mortgage-Free Home Available for Veteran or Military Family in Shelton

Operation Homefront, the San Antonio-based national non-profit that builds strong, stable, and secure military families, is seeking applications for the Homes on the Homefront program.

 

A mortgage-free home is available in Shelton, Connecticut, for a military family who is possibly transitioning out of the military or transferring to this area. The following home is currently available:

This 1,643 square-feet, multi-level townhouse features three bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms. The kitchen, dining, living room, and a half bath are on the main floor of the townhome. There are wood floors in the living room of the main floor and a beautiful fireplace. The finished basement has a family room and utility room where the laundry and mechanics are located. The second floor has two bedrooms and a full bath and the attic has a finished third bedroom with all with wood type flooring. There is an attached one-car garage, a balcony in the front, and a covered patio in the back. Shelton is located about an hour south of Hartford and just under an hour northeast of Norwalk. 

 

Deadline to apply is October 15, 2016.

 

Operation Homefront created the Homes on the Homefront program with the assistance of corporate partners to award mortgage-free homes to our nation’s veterans and military families. So far, Operation Homefront has awarded more than 550 homes to military families nationwide. In 2015, Operation Homefront awarded 92 homes and deeded 102.

2 from Ansonia show grit as they train for 60-mile walk in Boston

Event to benefit Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

Sometimes you meet young people who seem to have it all together at an early age.
That was my impression of Angela Khan when I met her when she was just 15 and an Ansonia High School student. She seemed much more mature than many of her peers at the time.  

Now 20 and in the U.S. Marine Corps, Angela and her best friend, Sarah Linley, also 20 and an AHS graduate, want to make a difference in the lives of women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Sarah is also in the military, serving as a U.S. Army Reservist. I've never met her, but it was clear as I spoke with her on the phone that she also is a determined young woman.

The two are raising funds to become eligible to participate in what I would consider grueling 60-mile walk, to be held July 27-29 in Boston.
From baking cookies and making jewelry to getting the word out through social media, the young women are working hard to reach their $2,300 fund-raising goals. Each participant needs to raise that much money before the walkathon to be able to participate.

I commend Angela and Sarah on their determination and wish them both success in their fund-raising and in their training regimens.
