Food Trucks event in Shelton to benefit PCRC

SHELTON - The Parent Child Resource Center will host “Food Trucks in the Valley” from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Shelton River Walk to benefit programs and services that serve children and families.

Who: This is an open event.

What: This event is celebrating “Back-to-School” with free admission, while 10 percent of the proceeds from each vendor go towards PCRC’s programs and services. We currently have 12 food trucks confirmed, including healthy options. The PCRC Beverage Table will serve beer, soda, juice and water.

Why: “Food Trucks in the Valley” will raise funds to support PCRC’s successful clinical programs that deliver a state of the art care to our clients – as a leader in the delivery of mental health services to children and families. Each year we serve more than 1,200 children, many who suffer from serious behavioral and emotional problems, including trauma, abuse, and neglect.

Family Campout at Ansonia Nature Center to mark anniversary

ANSONIA - Spend the night camping with your family and friends at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center to celebrate Ansonia's 125th anniversary on the weekend of Aug. 9-10.

The Family Campout and Star Party will be held from 5 p.m. Aug. 9 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 10. The nature center is at 10 Deerfield Road.

Relax in your chaise lounge while we search the night skies for “shooting stars.”

Bob Carruthers and the New Haven Astronomical Society will be available to talk about the Perseid meteor showers.

Bring your own camping equipment, picnic dinner, and beverages. (Non-alcoholic drinks, please.)

We will also enjoy a nice fire and stories at Picnic Pavilion #2, where we will make everyone’s favorite camping treat, s'mores.

Awaken in the morning to the beautiful sounds of the Nature Center’s many bird species and join us for breakfast.

  

Fee is $10 per family, which includes breakfast.

Ansonia celebrates 125th with old-fashioned fun

ANSONIA - Whew, what a party!

I had a wonderful day Saturday at SummerFest celebrating Ansonia's 125th birthday with my husband, daughter, friends, and many residents of Ansonia and the Valley.

And I'd say everyone there had a great time as well.

Eight to the Bar rocks Ansonia's birthday party.

Before Eight to the Bar took the stage the mellow tones of the Rob Zappulla Band entertained with  timeless standards like "Fly Me To The Moon,""Luck Be A Lady Tonight," and "More Today Than Yesterday."



Plaudits go out to residents Greg Martin and Garry Giannone of Copper City Marketing who put the event together along with Ansonia Middle School teacher Lisa Nicolari and many volunteers who worked hard to make the day a big success!

Ansonia to sponsor 2-day fishing program

Equipment will be provided

ANSONIA - Mayor David S. Cassetti is pleased to announce the opportunity for residents and others to join Ansonia’s two-day fishing program May 22 and May 24. 
The program will provide residents and others an opportunity to learn or brush up on their fishing techniques.  

“ I encourage all residents and others who would like to learn or just take a refresher course on the basics of fishing to enjoy the great outdoors and to take advantage of this unique opportunity,”  Cassetti said.

Ansonia's Recreation Department is sponsoring the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education Program. 

This is a chance for families to come together, learn, and enjoy a fishing experience. This gives people between the ages of seven years old and up an opportunity to learn about Connecticut Waters, fish identifications, how and where fish live, fishing techniques, laws and regulations, tying a strong knot, and how to cook your catch as well as many other interesting facts.

This two-day program will be held at the Ansonia Armory on State Street May 22 between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.
A fishing trip will be held May 24 at Abe Stone Park where the lessons learned May 22 will be put to use hands on in the class. The class will be held at Colony Pond between 8 a.m. and noon. All equipment will be provided.

Amphibians, kites in nature center spotlight

ANSONIA - Join staff at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. March 16 to search for amphibians, those ancient and fascinating creatures secretly inhabiting woods and wetlands.
Learn about vernal pools, one of the smallest and yet most interesting and ecologically important types of wetlands, and why they play an important role in the lives of wood frogs and spotted salamanders.

Help staff conduct an amphibian inventory by flipping over rocks and logs in search of the resident fauna in the park.
The nature center is at 10 Deerfield Road.

Kite workshop

Rangers Wendy and Martin will team up again at 2 p.m. March 17 to instruct families in the art of designing and constructing a kite.
Decorate it for St. Patrick's Day, or personalize it some other way.

Then if the day brings dry and windy weather, participants will be able to launch their kites after the class.

Materials fee is $5 per kite. Call to register.
