DETAILS:    On October 1, 2016 - Seymour Public Schools will begin a new four step student centralized registration process. Centralized registration will now be available for all Seymour Schools and will make it possible to enroll all children in a Seymour family at one time in one central location.  

 

Parents/Guardians can now follow these four steps for a simple enrollment process.

 

STEP 1: Obtain a Seymour School’s registration packet and school information packets at the Central Office building, located at Seymour Board of Education, 98 Bank Street, Seymour. We ask that you please call ahead for handicap accommodations.  All district forms must be processed for official enrollment registration. Packets may also be mailed or emailed upon request.

 

STEP 2: Parents/Legal Guardians must return in person with all completed district forms and required documents to the Centralized Registration Center.  We ask that when possible call ahead to let registration staff  know the time you are coming so that staff can be available to process your information more efficiently.  A notary will be on site for parents/legal guardians who need documents notarized.

 

STEP 3: The Centralized Registration Center staff will review and file legal documentation of each child (birth certificates, etc). Verification of documents and records may take up to three (3) days before notification to parents regarding acceptance can be made. 

 

STEP 4: Parents/ Legal Guardians will receive via phone and email a communication of acceptance and completion of the registration process, and will contact the child’s school administrator for a welcome and a date to report to school. Parents/Legal Guardians will be provided school forms/school-based information at this initial school meeting.

Former Valley Resident Going for Gold at X-Games

Former 2003 Seymour High School graduate, Richard Kearns, Jr., will represent the USA during the 2016 X-Games this weekend in Austin, Texas.

 

The X-Games are  known as the Olympics of action sports, where only the best in action sports are selected to compete. 

 

Kearns was chosen as one of the top 10 freestyle motocross riders  in the world, performing in the "Best Tricks" competition. He is the only rider representing the USA tomorrow night, Saturday June 4, 2016 in the "Best Trick" competition. Kearns will face nine other riders from New Zealand, Japan, France, Australia and Switzerland.  

 

In 2009, Kearns gave up everything. He sold his driveway sealing business, loaded up his van and drove from his CT home to California to purse a freestyle career. He didn't even start riding until 18. Just two years after getting into bikes, he was landing back flips with ease.  Kearns says his background in extreme skiing and BMX helped with the transition into freestyle motocross. By 2010, he was a regular on the Dew Tour, International Freestyle Motocross Association Tour, the Monster Truck circuit,  Monster Energy Freestyle circuit, appearing at NASCAR events and was the first freestyle motocross rider to land a "dead body back flip" and  the "Paris Hilton back flip".   

 

Some of Kearns'  highlights of his action sports career since his last appearance at the X-Games in 2010 has been: representing the USA and winning the 2013 X-Pilots World Freestyle Motocross Championship, he appeared in Country Music band Florida Georgia' Lines music video  "This is How We Roll" with Luke Bryan, touring with the Travis Pastrana's Nitro Circus Action Sports Tour, performing with the "Metal Mulisha Freestyle Tour",  the ATV Big Air Tour, making appearances at Monster Truck Shows, featured several freestyle motocross documentaries when he was selected as one of the top 50 freestyle motocross riders in the world in 2013 and several State Fairs.   

 

Currently, Kearns is on a very busy five month tour across the USA where he will be riding in demos, make appearances in the Nitro Circus Tour, the Universal City Soul Circus Tour, the Monster Energy Tour, NASCAR Pit Party Events, several State Fairs, several other freestyle motocross events and competitions.

 

People can watch Kearns make his bid for the gold medal in the  "Best Trick" competition at the 2016 X-Games in Austin which will be aired on ESPN tomorrow night, June 4th at 9 PM.

Seymour Teens Get Schooled in Driver Safety

SEYMOUR - Teen drivers at Seymour High School recently had a special opportunity to utilize the school's virtual interactive full-cab driving simulators which are part of the "Wildcat Teen Driving Center" at the school.  

 

Seymour is the only school in Connecticut with Virtual Interactive Full-Cab Driving Simulators available to its students. 
This was all part of a teen safe driving initiative held at the school. 
It was coordinated by Rich Kearns, Seymour Public Schools Director of Security.

Teens who signed-up for a special event appointment to use the Center were put through hands-on driving experiences showing the dangers of texting while driving. 

Students who participated were given certificates of safe driving to present to their insurance companies for potential safe driving discounts as well as gift cards for participating.   

 

To cap off the week the nationally-known teen safe driving program "Save a Life Tour Distracted/Texting Awareness  Program" from Grand Rapids, Mich. was invited back to make a stop at Seymour High School.

The program travels across the country educating teens in the responsibilities of safe driving focusing on the dangers of distracted/texting while driving. 

 

The Connecticut Department of Transportation provided the funding for the "Save A Life Tour Distracted/Texting Awareness Program" at 60 more high schools in Connecticut beginning in the fall of 2015 at no cost to the hosting schools. 
Seymour was one of the lucky schools to be able to capture the experience for its students. 

 

The "Save A Life Tour" is a high impact distracted driving program that demonstrates to students the potential deadly consequences of this dangerous behavior. Utilizing distracted driving simulators, videos, speakers, and surveys; students experience first-hand the impacts of distracted driving.

 

More than 200 students from Seymour High School participated in this life changing experience.  Kearns was joined by School Resource Officer Corey Tomasella, and Physical Education/Health Teachers Nick Aprea and Paul O'Connor who teamed up to help run the program.
