Bad Sons raises money for Pancreatic Cancer

DERBY-  BAD SONS Beer Co. featured Project Purple as their BAD SONS doing good things charity tap recipient for December 2018 and January 2019!

BAD SONS selected their Light Rider lager as the charity tap for Project Purple, donating $1 of every pint sold in December 2018 and January 2019. BAD SONS also donated their tap area to host a Mullett Unplugged concert on Friday, January 4^th. This event was sold out with 65 participants rocking the tap room floor! BAD SONS donated a percentage of the bar sales from the 4^th to Project Purple. 

This effort of both donations brought in $1,801 for Project Purple’s mission to raise awareness, support patients and families, and fund research efforts to defeat pancreatic cancer.

The Project Purple team would like to thank BAD SONS and Mullett. They would also like to send a special thank you to Zois Pizza, Antonio’s, and Dew Drop Inn for supporting our mission and the event on January 4th.

Mayor Continues Guest Bartending Gig

New Haven Law Group Gives Valley Non Profit a Big Boost

New Haven’s Faxon Law Group continued its yearly Bucket List Challenge campaign by donating $10,000 to Project Purple, a CT-based pancreatic cancer research and patient financial aid charity, and to Hartford’s Camp Courant, the oldest and largest free summer camp in the United States.

 

The trial law firm raised close to $60,000 in total for the two charities by collecting donations online and entering donors who contributed $100 or more into a raffle to win a bucket list trip to Kona, Hawaii.

 

According to Faxon Law Group’s website, the trip is valued at $10,000 and includes round trip airfare for two guests, a 7-night deluxe hotel stay, complimentary entries to the Kona Marathon and/or Family Fun Runs, a gift card for spending, and more.

 

The trip’s two lucky winners, Marisa and Paul Valentinetti, were thrilled to win after Marisa generously donated to Project Purple in honor of her mother who passed away from pancreatic cancer.

Shelton Firm Donates Big to Project Purple

           

SEYMOUR - Staff members at Dworken, Hillman, LaMorte and Sterczala, P.C. (DHL&S) in Shelton took it upon themselves to support Project Purple, a Seymour-based nonprofit, by naming the charity as the recipient to its 2018 Jeans for Charity Fundraiser.

 

The staff was encouraged to donate to a fund which was matched by the firm every Friday, in exchange for being allowed to wear jeans. DHL&S raised more than $4,805 for Project Purple as part of its annual campaign.

 

DHL&S, which specializes in accounting, tax, auditing, and business consulting, has raised more than $58,905 for local charities with its Jeans for Charity campaign since 2004.

 

“Fundraisers like this are so important for spreading awareness and sharing our mission,” said Project Purple CEO Dino Verrelli.

 

Project Purple is a national charity that paid out $100,000 in patient financial aid to 152 patients and families who were fighting pancreatic cancer in 2018, while donating $1.38 million in research grants last year.

 

This cause is near and dear to the DHL&S office staff, as some of its members have been impacted personally by the disease.

 

“We are proud to support such a worthy organization,”  DHL&S said in a Facebook post.

New Haven – The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is pleased to announce that lifelong Ansonia-resident James (Jimmy) E. Ryan is chairing its Board of Directors in 2018.

This year is Mr. Ryan’s seventh and final year on the Board that governs Greater New Haven’s 90-year-old permanent charitable endowment, valued at over $600 Million. Now retired, Mr. Ryan served for over thirty years as the President of the Shelton Economic Development Corp. (1984-2016).

The Community Foundation serves a 20-town region of more than 640,000 people in Connecticut helping donors to fulfill their charitable wishes and strengthening the nonprofit sector through grants and training. Per affiliation agreement, Mr. Ryan also sits on the Board of the Valley Community Foundation, The Community Foundation’s partner in philanthropy in the Valley.

Mayor Lauretti of Shelton, right, presented Martin D. Schwartz, President and CEO of The Kennedy Center, left, with a $5,000 check from the Mayor’s Annual Charity Golf Classic.  This sizable donation will be used for the agency’s general operating expenses.
 

SHELTON- Mayor Mark A. Lauretti recently surprised the Kennedy Center with a big donation over the holiday season with proceeds from his annual charity golf tournament.

 

“We want to personally thank Mayor Lauretti and the supporters of his golf tournament for their generous donation to The Kennedy Center,” said Martin D. Schwartz, President and CEO of The Kennedy Center.  “This substantial contribution has been earmarked for general operating expenses, which will benefit the 2,000 people with disabilities we serve throughout the region.”

 

Mayor Lauretti added, “I have been involved with The Kennedy Center for several decades.  This major rehabilitation agency provides people with disabilities many employment and community resources throughout the region, including in Shelton. In fact, several years ago, I hired an outstanding Kennedy Center worker in my office at City Hall.  I am honored to provide this worthwhile organization with a $5,000 donation from the Mayor’s Golf Tournament, so they can continue helping others.”

 

The Kennedy Center, founded in 1951, is an internationally accredited, non-profit, community-based rehabilitation organization that currently serves over 2,000 individuals annually. The agency actively responds to the needs of the community by offering innovative, comprehensive service options to persons with disabilities and special needs, from birth to senior years.

 

The Kennedy Center operates 31 community experience programs, 16 group homes, an industries program composed of six businesses, supported and competitive employment and job placement services, a family support and respite service, travel training, and a variety of children’s programs.

Seymour First Selectman Loses Taco Bet; Washes TEAM's Fleet of Delivery Vans

SEYMOUR - First Selectman Kurt Miller on Tuesday, June 20, made good on a bet he lost to TEAM Inc.'s President/CEO David Morgan, and spent two hours washing TEAM's Meals on Wheels food delivery trucks

Miller cleaned and polished several trucks in the parking lot of Hot Tamale's Mexican Bar & Grill.

The bet between Miller and Morgan happened last month during a charity taco-eating contest held at Hot Tamale's to raise money for the Meals on Wheels programs, which delivers nutritional meals directly to the front doors of the Valley's elderly folks and shut-ins.

According to TEAM officials, the Meals on Wheels program has taken a financial hit, thus being able to provide fewer amount of meals to those who request the service.

Spooner House Thanks Valley Residents and Businesses For Supporting April Food Drives

SHELTON = "The Dust Off Cruise on April 12 supported by Heav'nly Donuts in Derby netted 2,511 food items and the 13th annual Valley Has a Heart Spooner House food collection held April 18 were both very successful," said Executive Director Susan Agamy. "We came very close to our goal of $5,000. We received $2,001 cash combined with donated sponsor dollars of $2,550 for a total of $4,551.23. We received 2,763 non-perishable food items, as well. We owe the lower Naugatuck Valley residents appreciation for their continued generosity, despite the long, cold winter. Our shelves are now a lot more full thanks to their generosity."  

 

The results of the April 18th drives from the two Stop & Shop stores in Ansonia and Shelton and the Adams Super Food Store in Derby were:

Ansonia- 1,139 food items; $728.34 cash

Shelton- 1,099 food items; $896.84 cash

Derby-525 food items; $373.05 cash      

Total 'Valley Has a Heart' site sponsors were:

Spooner House deeply appreciates all the volunteers. In Shelton, they included members of the Shelton High School National Honor Society and a number of regular Spooner House volunteers. In Derby there were staff and some of their kids, grandkids and friends, as well as two Seymour High School volunteers. In Ansonia , Spooner House had about 25 people volunteering including those from the Shelton Youth Service Bureau's Youth2Youth program, Holy Rosary confirmation class volunteers and additional Spooner House staff and interns. During the day on Saturday at Spooner House, there were more than 15 volunteers from Save Our Youth. 

Agamy noted that these critical food drives owed their success to these volunteers. “We simply couldn’t complete drives without volunteers," she said. "To us, they represent the real heart of the Naugatuck Valley .”

Seymour Middle School’s Student Council helps send man with cancer on dream trip

SEYMOUR >> Thanks to the efforts of Seymour Middle School’s Student Council and a town charity, a local man diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer will be able to take his family on a trip of a lifetime to Disney World.
The Student Council held a community breakfast last month which was attended by more than 300 people. The event, dubbed spring’s “Unfrozen” breakfast, was a way to welcome spring in the theme of the popular Disney movie, “Frozen,” and featured the lovable snowman character, Olaf.

Bike for Hope chairman seeks to borrow tents

SHELTON - The Charity Bike event BikeforHOPE (www.dbtr.org/ride) is in need of four or five 10-foot x10-foot tents for Sept. 6.

We will be using them for the bike registration and bike safety area. We would greatly appreciate if you or anyone you know can loan a tent(s) for one day. 

One of our volunteers will pick up the tent(s) on Friday evening and return them by Saturday afternoon around 4 p.m.

Have fun and Bowl for Charity in Shelton

Talking Finger, a social media marketing agency based in Oxford, will host its first charity event in December, President Bill DeRosa said this week.

The company plans a Bowl for Charity Tournament from 5:30-8 p.m. Dec. 11 at the SportsCenter of CT "Fun Bowl," 784 River Road, Shelton.

DeRosa said, "Twelve teams of four will compete to win the net proceeds of the event for the charity of their choice." The entry fee for a team of four is $125.

It's better to be lucky than good

That expression goes back quite a few years, I'm sure.

But I suppose the Seymour couple who won the $60 million Powerball jackpot June 23 is feeling pretty lucky, and pretty good.

Noel and Fredda Peel picked up their winnings Tuesday at lottery headquarters.
 
Taken in a lump sum, their winning is worth $39,814,000 after taxes.


Wow. I can't even imagine.

Even though I write for a newspaper, I'm not sure if I'd want to be interviewed about such a huge win. Nor would I want my name released or my photo taken!
I'm pretty sure I'd just want to get out of Dodge for awhile.


What would you do with all that money? It would be wonderful to not have to worry about paying bills any more, wouldn't it?
