Ansonia Rotary honors first responders

ANSONIA - Amidst family, friends and coworkers, two Ansonia first responders received awards recently from the Rotary Club of Ansonia.

Police Officer Nathan Anderson and Eagle Hose, Hook and Ladder Company Lt. Robert Mut accepted their honors at Molto Bene Italian Kitchen Restaurant at a dinner in their honor.
Both were selected by their supervisors and peers, and were applauded for their contributions to the community.
Christopher Hope of Ansonia Medical Rescue Services was unable to attend and will receive his award during a Rotary Club weekly meeting at The Original Antonio’s Restaurant.

Nominees were chosen by each respective department based on specific criteria including initiative, appearance, attitude and dependability, job knowledge and job performance.
Anderson has been a police officer for 23 years, and demonstrates professionalism and competence, always meeting high standards, according to Chief Kevin Hale.
His calm, positive demeanor during times of high stress has earned the respect and praise of his fellow officers as well as his supervisors.
This is Anderson’s second award – a first in the Department.

First Lt. Robert Mut has been an active and dedicated member of the Ansonia Fire Department since 1987.
He originally joined the Eagle Hose H&L Company 6; transferred for a short while to the Hilltop Hose Company 5 and then returned to the Eagles.
His current rank of First Lieutenant was earned in February 2013. He mentors members of the fire department and insures Company 6 is properly trained and prepared, and the equipment is in excellent condition. Bob is a certified Hazardous Material Technician, and is employed by Clean Harbors.  
Ansonia Rotary Club President Bill Zinky and emcee Sue Reilly congratulated the awardees for their meritorious service. The mayor’s office presented each with a proclamation.
The Ansonia Rotary Club meets at noon Tuesdays at The Original Antonio’s Restaurant. Guests are welcomed.

Fountain Hose in Ansonia to hold ziti dinner

ANSONIA - Ansonia Fire Department Fountain Hose Company will hold an all-you-can-eat ziti dinner fundraiser from 4-8 p.m. Nov. 9 at Fountain Hose Company firehouse, 191 Howard Ave.

The menu includes ziti, meatballs, salad, bread, coffee, tea, soda and dessert.

Tickets are $8 a person in advance.

Ansonia fire department receives funding for cameras

Blumenthal, Murphy, DeLauro applaud grant

U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy, along with U.S. Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro, today applauded news the Ansonia Fire Department is receiving a $17,100 grant from the Department of Homeland Security.

The grant, made through the Assistance for Firefighters Grant program will be used to purchase thermal-imaging cameras.

Blumenthal said, “This grant will help the City of Ansonia purchase two new thermal imaging cameras, replacing 12-year-old equipment badly in need of an upgrade.
"These cameras enable firefighters to see through dense smoke, allowing them to more quickly locate victims and potential hazards. This is an important, well-deserved investment in the safety of the city’s volunteer firefighters and residents. I applaud this award and remain ever grateful to the live-saving, heroic efforts of our first responders."

Murphy commented, “Few things are more important than supporting our firefighters and first responders who put their lives on the line to protect our communities. This grant will provide critical support to help Ansonia’s firefighters do their jobs more effectively, and will help to keep them safe as well. I’ll continue to fight for these heroes as they fight for us.”

“Ensuring first responders have necessary equipment is crucial to protecting not only the public, but the brave men and women who rush into buildings when others are rushing out,” DeLauro said. “This grant will keep people in Ansonia safer and better prepare their first responders for the dangerous and lifesaving work they so ably do.”

“The thermal imaging cameras are now a necessity to the fire service,” said Ansonia Fire Chief Joseph Kingston. “This technology is essential to firefighter safety.”

“We are thankful for the support of the Assistance to Firefighter Grant funds which will move our department forward in its mission to protect Ansonia residents,” Kingston added.
