Officials hammering out details of next demolition phase for Ansonia Copper & Brass

ANSONIA >> City officials are hammering out details to make way for the next phase of demolition to the former Ansonia Copper & Brass property downtown.
According to Economic Development Director Sheila O’Malley, the city is working with Property Owner Ray McGee and his legal counsel in drafting a new Memorandum of Understanding for the second phase of demolition. O’Malley is hopeful the MOU can be finalized and ready for a vote of the Board of Aldermen at its meeting next week.
O’Malley said the second phase includes “up to approximately 200,000 additional square feet” that has been proposed for the wrecking ball.

Ansonia Copper & Brass plant demolition begins

ANSONIA >> Demolition of the former Ansonia Copper & Brass plant got underway Tuesday, bringing a historic part of the city’s manufacturing past crashing to the ground.
“This is an exciting new chapter for the city of Ansonia,” said Mayor David Cassetti. “Blighted industrial space is being converted into a blank canvas on which the future of economic development can be painted.”

Grant will help remediate Ansonia Copper & Brass property

ANSONIA >> The city will receive a $200,000 state grant to help assess and remediate a portion of the defunct Ansonia Copper & Brass property downtown.
The news came from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy Thursday, who said in a press release that Ansonia is one of 11 municipalities to share $1.7 million in assessment grants to support property clean-up and advance the development of Brownfield sites throughout Connecticut.
The grants come courtesy of the state Department of Economic and Community Development.

ANSONIA - Mayor David S. Cassetti, members of his administration, Tim Sullivan, Director of the CT Department of Economic and Community Development Office of Brownfields Remediation, Mark Lewis from the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and state Rep. Linda M. Gentile, D-Ansonia met to discuss the Ansonia Copper and Brass site.

"This site occupies almost 40 acres in our downtown and we need to begin to address the issues associated with it," Cassetti said.
"I am asking the state's assistance for Brownfields' assessment funds."

"We can no longer ignore all the problems that result from unused or underutilized manufacturing buildings especially when we are so small that developable land is a rare commodity," Cassetti said.

The City of Ansonia plans to apply for assessment money to characterize the 40-acre site and determine the extent and cost of the remediation.
