Valley Towns Close all Parks, Playgrounds, Basketball Courts Amid COVID-19 Concerns

ANSONIA: Attention residents- At this time for public safety, we must close all city basketball courts, city playgrounds and city parks to the public. If you are out for a walk in open space, please practice social distancing by staying six feet apart- Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti

SEYMOUR: Effective tonight (March 23) at 5 pm, we will be closing all parks and playgrounds in Seymour to go along with all of the sports fields on school property. DERBY: As we continue to navigate our new reality amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important that local government officials help set the tone to mitigate the spread of the virus.

In accordance with this idea, Derby will be following the lead of Seymour, Ansonia and Oxford and closing our public parks until further notice.

This includes:

-Payden Park/Ryan/DeFillippo Field (baseball, football/soccer field and track),

-Bradley School court and playground, Irving School court and playground,

-Witek Park Soccer Field,

-the picnic grove and basketball courts

As of right now, the Derby Greenway will remain open, but we strongly encourage you to practice social distancing if you chose to utilize it.

Ansonia City Hall Upgrades Phone System

ANSONIA - Mayor David Cassetti has announced a major technology upgrade to make city departments more accessible and allow our staff to utilize modern communications technology. The I.T. Department has been working hard to migrate all phone systems to a new Mitel VOIP system.  This will enhance the ability to speak with departments, access real time information and expand the capabilities of the office staff.  The City will also find savings in monthly phone costs once the deployment is complete.  The Ansonia Board of Education currently utilizes this phone system and City departments will now be able to communicate directly with all Board of Education locations directly.  This is a further step in continuing to align the Board of Education and the City’s various technology platforms.

The first deployment to the new phone system took place Oct. 31 at City Hall.  All City Hall based Departments will be affected by this change.  We ask that the public please be patient as we complete our cut over to the new system.  Department main phone numbers will not change, however individual extensions will.  A complete list of Department numbers and direct extensions will be added to the City’s website.

On Wednesday, November 6^th, 2019 the following Departments will also transition to the new system: Public Works, Ansonia Library, Ansonia Nature Center and Ansonia Rescue Medical Services.

On Wednesday, November 14^th, 2019 the Police Department will transition to the new phone system.  The Police Dispatch number will remain 203 735-1885.

Residents may use City Hall’s main number, 203 736-5900 to reach any Department.  An auto attendant will prompt you to select the correct Department or you may press 0 to reach an attendant during normal business hours.

We apologize in advance for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience in this upgrade process.  Mayor Cassetti is pleased to also announce that future upgrades to the phone and data network, including public access in City Buildings to WIFI, will soon follow.

Ansonia Park Celebrates New Beginning

ANSONIA - Although an extended thunderstorm cut short a proposed daylong celebration (Saturday, July 27) of Abe Stone Park’s new beginning, the rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the day’s ceremony that was well-attended by City residents and dignitaries.


Mayor David Cassetti spoke and thanked sponsors whose generous donations to the Mayor’s Ansonia Beautification Fund enabled the extensive park makeover. Free hot dogs were served throughout the afternoon, rain or shine, for all those attending. There was pickup basketball and wiffleball games, volleyball, boating on Colony Pond, and new hiking trails explored as the live band on hand played on. 

Mayor Cassetti invites residents to rediscover Abe Stone Park, take a hike around the pond. Bring family and friends for a cookout or outing. Come down to boat, fish, play basketball and enjoy the new volleyball court.

Volunteers Needed for Earth Day Clean-up

ANSONIA - Mayor Dave Cassetti is seeking volunteers to assist in his third annual Earth Day Cleanup of litter on select streets in the City. 

The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon April 27. The meeting place is 9 a.m. at the Ansonia Armory, 5 State St. Reflective vests, pickers, and trash bags will be provided. Over the past two Earth Day events, more than 1,000 lbs of paper/cans/bottles have been collected. All volunteers participating will be treated to a post-cleanup pizza party too!

Vandals Strike Ansonia Again

ANSONIA - This past Saturday afternoon, Christ Church on South Cliff Street, and historic stairwell adjacent the Prospect Street playground was defaced once again with graffiti. Given the nature of graphics, it is hopeful that someone may recognize and link these renderings to the culprit.

These graffiti tags along with 50 more, will be professionally removed in early May as part of Mayor David Cassetti’s Clean & Green initiatives.

Downtown Ansonia Welcomes Hair Salon

ANSONIA - Mayor Dave Cassetti and other dignitaries made it a formal welcome to downtown for Cindy’s Hair Company with an official ribbon cutting grand opening on Feb. 26.

Originally based in downtown Seymour for 26 years, owner Cindy Boladz and her daughter Cassie relocated the business here earlier this winter. The 1,250 sq. ft. space offers inspiring high ceilings with exposed brick for customers and her staff of six to enjoy.

Ansonia Opens Revamped Wakelee Avenue

ANSONIA- A gathering of nearly 100 city officials and residents took part in Wakelee Avenue’s official ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday evening. The celebration culminates an eight month reconstruction of one of Ansonia’s most historic streets.

And what better location to host the ceremony as a backdrop was one of Wakelee Avenue’s marquee businesses – Roma’s Pizza. Owner’s Louie and Adrian offered up a seemingly endless serving of assorted pizzas, trays of chicken wings along with Christmas cookies, soda and coffee for all those attending.

The reconstruction project included milling and paving, new sidewalks, installation of 120 antique lamps, new drainage and granite curbing, trees, and benches along the mile long avenue.

Casa Bianca Pizza Opens in Ansonia

ANSONIA-  A large crowd of customers and city officials attended the grand opening of Casa Bianca Pizza Nov. 29, including Mayor David Cassetti, Valley Chamber President Bill Purcell, 6th Ward Alderman Josh Shuart and Economic Development Commission President Bill Luneski.

Food samples abounded as confetti flew to celebrate Casa Bianca’s second location. The Ansonia location is being developed as a prototype franchise.

Casa Bianca, located at 669 Main St, offers pick-up and delivery daily and extra late hours.

Ansonia Harvest Festival Happening Sept. 29

ANSONIA >> Organizers of this year’s Ansonia Harvest Festival have “pulled out all the stops” to usher in the fall season this weekend with plenty of food, festivities and family fun.

The 18^th annual festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (SEPT. 29) in downtown. This year’s event is sponsored by Road Ready Used Cars, and is free and open to the public.

Event Coordinator Rich DiCarlo said the Ansonia Cultural Commission has been working hard to ensure this year’s festival will be bigger and better than ever.

“Every now and then we have to change things up to keep it fresh and new,” said DiCarlo.

In addition to dozens of food and craft vendors lining Main Street, offering the likes of fried dough and fried chicken to BBQ and Spanish cuisine, DiCarlo said this year’s festival will highlight what makes Ansonia special.

The city’s Fire House Museum will be on display with antique fire apparatus and engines, along with antique autos and tractors. The Valley Arts Council will be previewing some art in front of the site that will house their new “Main Street” Gallery this fall. 

There will also be hay rides, pony and horse rides, a petting zoo, a kid’s zone, face painting, henna temporary tattoos and more.

Live music will also be featured all day long featuring Southern Voices, Sumo Side Car, Survivor Swing Band and a Magic show by Pete n' Chris! 

“Harvey” the festival mascot will also be on hand, and joined this year by the Connecticut Siren girls who’ll be dressed like scarecrows and strolling Main Street for photo opportunities.

Also new this year is a pie baking and pie eating contest, both sponsored by Eddy’s Bake Shop. The pie eating contest will be held at Eddy’s at 2 p.m.

DiCarlo said there is plenty of free parking adjacent to Main Street, and “the weatherman is calling for a beautiful sunny autumn day.”

Mayor David Cassetti is looking forward to the annual event.

“The Harvest Festival is a long-standing Ansonia tradition,” Cassetti said. “I am very excited about it because in addition to bringing the community together and building on the strong ties we all have in the Valley, this event helps to showcase our businesses and restaurants. We are very proud of our recharged downtown and this is a great event to showcase that.”

 

Valley Mayor Steps Back into the Ring

The "Young Gloves" program begins Sept. 6, and will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Ansonia Armory, 5 State St.

The program is open Valley boys and girls ages 6-13. The cost is $40 per student and all safety equipment, including new mouth guards, boxing gloves and protective head gear is provided.

Students are required to show up to class in shorts, t-shirt and sneakers. The program will culminate Nov. 3 with an official Connecticut Amateur Boxing event Nov. 3, with trophies awarded.

Cassetti began the popular club as a way to help build kids’ confidence. Last year’s club was a total knockout, drawing more than 90 kids to the ring.

 
During the program, kids will learn the fundamentals and train like a boxer, Cassetti said, while having fun and getting fit in a supervised environment. Kids will be grouped by age, and will participate in workouts that include sparring, speed bag, heavy bag, jump rope and various forms of aerobic exercise.  Cassetti said the club not only gets kids away from video games and off their phones, it teaches them confidence, coordination and skill, while developing discipline and work ethics.
