Griffin's Books for Babies gets Big Boost

Michael Law, Senior Director, Customer Strategy and Planning at Edgewell Personal Care, second from left, recently presented a $5,000 donation to, from left, Margaret Fischer, RNC MSN NEA-BC C-EFM, clinical director of The Childbirth Center at Griffin Hospital, Griffin Hospital President and CEO Patrick Charmel, and Tricia O’Malley, director of The Griffin Hospital Development Fund, to support the Books for Babies program.

DERBY -  Edgewell Personal Care, of Shelton, recently made a generous $5,000 gift to support the Books for Babies program at The Childbirth Center at Griffin Hospital in Derby.
In addition to providing funds to purchase books for newborns, Edgewell also donated free sippy cups and feminine products.

“Edgewell is pleased to partner with Griffin Hospital to provide financial and product support to provide parents with the tools they need to get their children off to a good start,” said Michael Law, Senior Director, Customer Strategy and Planning at Edgewell and a member of Griffin Hospital’s Board of Directors.

The Books for Babies program provides a free children’s book to parents who have their baby at the Childbirth Center. A trained volunteer visits with parents to introduce the program and talk about the “how and why” of reading aloud to babies. Reading to babies builds a bond between parent and child, and stimulates brain development. Reading books opens doors to conversations and builds communication skills, language and literacy, as well as social and emotional skills.

Talk in Ansonia stirs memories of being a new mother

Myra Jones-Taylor, executive director, Connecticut Office of Early Childhood, speaks Monday at a Read Across the Valley Day breakfast at Molto Bene Italian Kitchen in Ansonia.

ANSONIA - On Monday I was intrigued by what Myra Jones-Taylor said about the importance of early childhood education.
The New Haven resident and mother of two was keynote speaker at an annual Read Across the Valley breakfast.
She is a cultural anthropologist and last June Gov. Dannel P. Malloy named her executive director of the newly-formed Connecticut Office of Early Childhood.

The event sponsored by the Early Childhood Task Force of the Valley Council on Health and Human Services was held at Molto Bene Italian Kitchen.

Jones-Taylor hit home when she urged parents and grandparents to talk to their babies, to make them laugh, and help them develop a curiosity of the world around them.

My husband, Ralph, and I feel we did just that when our children were very young, and it's safe to say that it paid off. Yes, we are proud parents.

It was good to hear an early childhood expert validate what we - and of course many, many other parents - did and are continuing to do when raising the next generation.

DERBY -  The Newborn Channel is now available at The Childbirth Center at Griffin Hospital.
The Newborn Channel delivers essential newborn and parenting information to help prepare new moms when they need it most.
New parents and their families can enjoy easy access to highly trusted, professionally endorsed content on infant and mom care, siblings and family living, work-life balance, and more.
The Newborn Channel provides engaging and accessible programming on many topics, including:

• Breastfeeding basics and tips for success;
• Safety topics like Car Seat Safety, Smoking Cessation, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and more;
• Programs and transcripts from the Newborn Channel are also available for new parents on demand before, during and after their hospital stay.
The educational content on the Newborn Channel is overseen and reviewed by a Medical Advisory Board which works diligently to ensure all content is up-to-date and presented in a clear and understandable way for patients and their families.
“The Newborn Channel helps supplement our nurses’ patient education efforts. Because it is always available, our nursing and education staff is able to recommend quality, up-to-date education for new parents in their time of need,” said Luanne Miller, BSN, R.N., director of the Childbirth Center.

“The Newborn Channel's baby care and postpartum programming is available in over 1000 U.S. hospitals” said Dave Ross, COO of The Wellness Network. “Having a baby, especially the first time, can be a little scary for new parents.
