Autumn Open Hearth Event Nov. 9 in Derby

DERBY - Please join us for Derby Historical Society’s Autumn Open Hearth event on Saturday, November 9, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  We will be raffling off an American Girl Wellie Wisher, courtesy of Heather’s Korner, and a set of four tickets to the Friday, November 22 Huskies vs Providence Hockey Game at the XL Center in Hartford! 

There will be tours of our circa 1698 museum house, Dutch oven baking, and we have a great gift shop filled with little treasures, including handmade clothes for all of your American Girl Doll needs.

Derby Historical Society Gets New Leader

DERBY- The Derby Historical Society announces the transition of leadership from Paula J. Norton, who after serving the DHS for over 9-years is passing the baton to Daniel L. Bosques. 

As executive director, Daniel, who has also been involved with the DHS for 9-years will continue in the legacy of serving the lower Naugatuck Valley towns of Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and  Shelton. 

Paula and Daniel are pictured here alongside some of the docents who help make the David Humphreys House come to life with their award-winning A Day in 1762 school program, as well as during numerous open houses and events; this will be the 39th-year that the Derby Historical Society offers this field trip to students from all over Connecticut.

Derby Historical Society to host 'Taste of the Past'

ANSONIA – The Derby Historical Society will host “A Taste of the Past” from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 16 at the David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St. 

It will be held in lieu of the historical society's annual Open Hearth Cooking event, due to ongoing renovations at the David Humphreys House.

There will be samplings of traditional holiday favorites, including, but not limited to, baked ham, Brunswick stew, plum pudding, and pumpkin pie. 
Docents and junior docents will demonstrate Colonial tasks and give house tours. 
The gift shop will be open during this event. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and children under 12.

Derby native son's birthday is today

David Humphreys 1752-1818

Happy Birthday, David Humphreys!

Gen. David Humphreys, Revolutionary war hero and successful businessman, was born in 1752 in modern-day Ansonia, but at the time it was known as Derby.

The family home at 37 Elm St., Ansonia, is now home to the Derby Historical Society.

The nonprofit organization wished Humphreys a happy birthday on its Facebook page today and I thought I'd do the same.

If you've never visited the Colonial homestead I urge you to do so. It's always interesting to get a glimpse of what life was like in the 1700s. 

Docents will give you a tour of the house from 1 to 4 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students and free for children under 8.

Derby Historical Society to dedicate Hull portrait in Ansonia

Ceremony planned at Humphreys House 

ANSONIA - The Derby Historical Society invites the public for the announcement this Sunday of the addition of a portrait of Commodore Isaac Hull (c. 1798-1804) to the Society's museum collection.

Isaac Hull

A brief dedication ceremony will be held at 1:30 pm. at the Gen. David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.

Refreshments will be served. 
This event is free to the public; donations are accepted and appreciated.

Sunday tours will also be held on this date, from 2 – 4 p.m.  Feel free to inquire about a tour after the ceremony.

'Twelfth Night' celebration planned in Ansonia

A holiday tradition continues

ANSONIA - The Derby Historical Society will host a celebration of "Twelfth Night" from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.

"Twelfth Night" marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas and the end of the holiday season.
  
Come and turn back the clock, and partake in the refreshments similar to those served in Colonial days. 
Bask in the warmth of the fireplace, enjoy caroling with the historical society's junior docents, see demonstrations of Colonial living skills, and take a tour of the historic house.

The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and children ages 4-16. Children under 4 are admitted free.

Derby Historical Society to display portrait of Isaac Hull

ANSONIA - The Derby Historical Society is offering residents a rare opportunity Saturday to view an 18th-century portrait of Commodore Isaac Hull.

The portrait will be on display from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.
The portrait, painted between 1798 and 1804, depicts Captain Isaac Hull in full dress uniform at approximately 25 to 27 years old.
It was originally owned by Isaac Hull and since his death has been in a private collection.

Admission to the David Humphreys House is $5 for adults; $3 for senior citizens and students; and free for children under 8.

Open-hearth cooking planned at Humphreys House

ANSONIA - Derby Historical Society docents will offer a Colonial cooking demonstration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 at the David Humphreys House, 37 Elm St.

Visitors will be able to sample foods that are part of a traditional Thanksgiving feast.

Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children and senior citizens, and free for children under 8.
