ANSONIA - Mayor Dave Cassetti received a history lesson last Thursday at City Hall as he congratulated three winners of the Ansonia Historical Commission’s annual essay contest. The announced winners included:

1^st Place – Kristina Gecaj – Assumption School

2^nd Place – Jenna Davis – Assumption School

3^rd Place – Mikayla Wiacek – Assumption School

The contest, in its 15^th year, was open to middle school students throughout Ansonia and Assumption School. 34 entries were submitted for review by Historical Commission Judges Loisann Marazzi and Chairperson Mary Gibson.

This year’s 500-word essay theme was a fictional/factual interpretation of being an  eyewitness to pedal bicycle inventor Pierre Lallement, as he rode his bicycle through downtown Ansonia in 1865, his hometown.

Mayor Cassetti told the winners, “I am extremely proud of you and your accomplishments in winning these awards tonight. It tells me that you love Ansonia as much as I do.”

For their creative writing skills, each winner received a certificate and monetary award of $100/First Place, $75/Second Place & $50/Third Place.

Assumption School in Ansonia accepting registration for 2015-16 school year

ANSONIA >> Assumption School is currently accepting registration for the 2015-2016 school year. The school features prekindergarten for three and four year olds, with a choice of a four or six hour day ~Monday through Friday and kindergarten through grade eight. There is a before/after school program, bus transportation for Ansonia residents, and a full day kindergarten. PHOTOS: Assumption School students go pink for breast cancer awareness in Ansonia

ANSONIA >> Students at Assumption School went pink Friday, Oct. 24, in support of national Breast Cancer Month, and also raised funds for the cause.

Students Brooke Armistead, a 7th grader, and Alexa Benfanti, an 8th grader, designed a T-shirt, raising awareness for the cause. The girls raised $625 from T-shirt sales, and presented a check to Griffin Hospital's Hewitt Center for Breast Health. The two girls presented Janet Hall from Griffin's development office with the check during a brief ceremony at the school Friday.

During the school's morning prayer service, students and staff formed a huge, human pink cross.

Ansonia commission applauds essay contest winners

ANSONIA - "I want to thank the Historical Society for another successful year in putting the essay contest together again, Mayor David S. Cassetti said earlier this week. "This year the Historical Commission received over 40 student entries and I am proud of them all.”

"The Historical Commission fosters the importance of our city’s history and educates students.     I am thrilled with the commitment of our students to spend the time to learn the history and write essays for this contest," Cassetti said. 

For more than 10 years the Historical Commission has assigned different themes for the essay contests. These themes give students a chance to learn and gain the city’s importance of its history. This year students were asked to write about Pork Hollow.
The student essays were all numbered and their names remained anonymous to the judges.
One person knows which student is assigned to which number and as the two judges go through all the essays, they pick the top three best “numbered students.”
Winners were selected based upon their accuracy, in depth of history, and individuality.

Congratulations to the top three winners; Jordyn Davis, Liam Hines, and Matthew Torres.

The honorable mention winners were Joshua Proctor, Gillian Nemec, and Jonathan Abate all of Assumption School.

“Parents, you should be proud of your student efforts and I thank you for encouraging your children to learn about Ansonia," Cassetti said.
"A special thanks goes to Kathleen Molner, Principal of Assumption School, and Amy O’Brien, Ansonia Middle School principal, for their cooperation in the contest," Cassetti said.

ANSONIA - Assumption School is accepting registration for the 2014-2015 school year.

The school has openings in pre-kindergarten for 3 and 4-year olds, full-day kindergarten and grades 1-8.

Assumption School in Ansonia slates open house

ANSONIA - Assumption School invites prospective students, their families, parishioners and community residents to an Open House from 6:30-7:30 pm. Jan. 29 at the school, 51 N. Cliff St.

Students will conduct tours and entertain visitors with “a trip around the world.”
Each classroom will be transformed into a country.

Staff will be on hand to accept preregistration for next year’s classes.

Ansonia man wins Family Fun at Men's Health Day

Mark Lionetti of Ansonia, and his daughters Alyssa and Lindsay, who attend Assumption School, were the winners of the $200 Family Fun Day gift card for the Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton.

Lionetti’s daughters brought him to the event so he could get health screenings and they could receive a $25 gift card from the Sports Center.
The girls learned about the June 29 Men’s Health Day event at the Center in the Father’s Day card they received in school (shown in the photo) that was distributed as part of the Griffin Hospital’s Health Initiative for Men (HiM) campaign.

Lionetti was awarded the card by Frank Michaud, who along with wife Judy established the HiM Fund at the Valley Community Foundation. The fund helps pay for these and other men’s health screening and awareness activities.

Justin is a graduate of Assumption School Class of 2011. He has chosen to renovate the tech lab at Assumption School for his Eagle Scout Service Project.
