Seymour Marks Veterans Day

SEYMOUR - The town and VFW Post 12084 recently held its annual Veterans Day candlelight vigil ceremony at Broad Street Park. Local mayors and area lawmakers were on hand, while Col. Jerry Lukowski of the CT National Guard served as guest speaker. Longtime Board of Education member Fred Stanek served as emcee of the event, which was led by the Seymour Middle School chorus singing “God Bless America.”  Members of the Seymour police, fire and emergency services departments presented wreaths at the various war memorials.

Seymour Trunk or Treat Moved to Oct. 28

SEYMOUR - The annual Seymour Trunk or Treat event has been moved to Sunday Oct. 28 due to the rainy weather forecast.

 

Set-up times are between 5 and 6 pm (come earlier if you like)  The event is from 6 pm to 8 pm at Seymour Middle School. See flyer below for event details.

Local Lawmakers Honor Seymour Students

SEYMOUR- In honor of Women’s History Month, State Representative Nicole Klarides-Ditria and State Senator Eric Berthel hosted an essay contest for Seymour 6th graders with the theme, “How a Connecticut Woman Made a Contribution to the State and/or Nation and How it Has Influenced Me.”

The winner and runner-up finishers were picked by the teachers at Seymour Middle School and were presented with an official state citation and pin. The winner and runner-up, and who they profiled, are:

First Place – Adelina Barreira – Caroline Maria Hewins

Runner-Up – Colin Stewart – Ella Tambussi Grasso

Seymour Students Send Care Packages to Soldiers

SEYMOUR- The Seymour Middle School 6th grade social studies classes, led by Ashley Castaldi and Chris Alcutt, sponsored a care package drive to collect items such as toiletries, snacks, and K-9 supplies for soldiers who are currently deployed overseas.

The purpose of this drive was to promote good citizenship, volunteerism, and to participate in an activity that promotes social awareness. This activity was centered on the celebration of veterans. The students were able to understand what sacrifices soldiers make, such as not having access to everyday items that they may take for granted. The care packages were sent to 6th grade teacher Dina Garrow’s brother-in-law’s Unit currently stationed in Afghanistan.

Seymour Middle School Glee Club Rocks Radio City Music Hall

SEYMOUR- The Seymour Middle School Glee Club under the direction of Music Teacher, Mr. Nate Dobas, performed at Radio City Music Hall in New York City today. The Glee Club did a wonderful job and we are very proud of them!

SEYMOUR -  The Connecticut Hurricanes Drum & Bugle Corps of Seymour will host its annual Veterans Appreciation Concert from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday April 29^th at the Seymour Middle School Auditorium, 211, Mountain Road, Seymour.

Budding Young Chefs Create Healthy Recipes at Seymour Middle School

SEYMOUR = Students at Seymour Middle School recently cooked up a storm for a chance to compete in a Valley-wide healthy cooking challenge. 

 

As a way to promote healthy eating habits among teens and tweens, the school district's Director of Nutrition Services, Cindy Brooks, recently staged the school's annual "Healthy Recipe Challenge."

 

Six student chefs were chosen to compete in the final round, with the middle school's winning chef, Arlinda Peraj, taking home bragging rights with her Healthy Cinnamon Apple Waffles. 

 

Brooks said her role, along with the School Nutrition Association of Connecticut and Valley Initiative to Advance Health and Learning in Schools, or VITAHLS, is to get kids thinking about healthy eating habits at a young age.

The young chefs worked with assistance from the cafeteria staff to create their healthy dishes.

 

Arlinda now moves on to compete with other Valley students in the final VITAHLS competition, scheduled for May 17 at Griffin Hospital in Derby.

Seymour Middle School’s Student Council helps send man with cancer on dream trip

SEYMOUR >> Thanks to the efforts of Seymour Middle School’s Student Council and a town charity, a local man diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer will be able to take his family on a trip of a lifetime to Disney World.
The Student Council held a community breakfast last month which was attended by more than 300 people. The event, dubbed spring’s “Unfrozen” breakfast, was a way to welcome spring in the theme of the popular Disney movie, “Frozen,” and featured the lovable snowman character, Olaf.

Seymour Middle School gets grant from Hamden foundation for 2nd portable defibrillator

SEYMOUR >> Minutes matter when someone is having a heart attack and having a life-saving defibrillator on hand can mean the difference between life and death.
The small, portable devices, known as Automated External Defibrillators, or AED’s, deliver a brief electric shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat.
Thanks to a donation from the Hamden-based Michael Vincent Sage Dragonheart Foundation, Seymour Middle School acquired its second AED on Friday.

Seymour Middle School honors local veterans

SEYMOUR >> The students and faculty of Seymour Middle School celebrated Veterans Day with a day of patriotic programs and activities.

The celebration of Veterans Day began with a flag-raising ceremony, featuring the Seymour American Legion Color Guard, and a performance of the National Anthem by the school chorus. Following the ceremony, students viewed a recording of the Veterans Day Bell Ceremony, which took place at the American Legion headquarters.

Harvey Catlin, an eighth-grade social studies teacher, said that “Veterans Day is one of my favorite days to be a U.S. History teacher.”

Throughout the day, students were immersed in learning activities that focused on the history and importance of Veterans Day. Students learned about local veterans through readings and the viewing of video clips. The highlight of the day was the host of guest speakers that visited the school. Family members of students and staff who served our country were invited in to share their stories. These veterans brought the true meaning of Veterans Day to life through their respective presentations, resulting in a quality learning experience for our students.

These events have become an annual fixture at Seymour Middle School. The students and staff wish to thank all veterans for their service, and extend their gratitude to the speakers who shared their stories on Veterans Day.

Seymour Middle School mourns passing of former principal known as a ‘true jokester’

SEYMOUR >> There’s never been anyone quite like former beloved Seymour Middle School Principal Paul Porter, a jovial man known for his larger than life personality, contagious laugh and philosophy that students should experience the world not by books alone.
That’s how many of his co-workers remembered Porter, who passed away in South Carolina last week at age 68.
Porter led the middle school for 16 years before retiring in 2004. His passing deeply saddened the SMS family, said teacher Christine Kaszeta, who was filled with fond memories and funny stories about the boss she was proud to call friend.
