5K Run/Walk for Drug Awareness

  

Shelton, CT (June 2019) Fight Against Drugs Everywhere (FADE) will hold its fifth annual drug awareness 5k run/walk on June 27 at 5:30 pm at the Shelton Pavilion & Riverwalk. All proceeds will benefit the BHcare’s Alliance for Prevention and Wellness (APW).

This year’s event will feature guest speaker John Lally and the “Today I Matter Project.” The event will conclude with a candlelight remembrance ceremony. Names will be read of loved ones lost to overdose. People can submit names at the event to be read aloud. 

Drug overdoses and drug overdose deaths continue to rise at an alarming rate. More than 120 people die every day in the U.S. from an opioid overdose. Both prescription painkillers and heroin are contributing to this phenomenon. The overall drug deaths in Connecticut have nearly tripled over the past seven years, from 357 in 2012 to 1,018 in 2018. 

FADE 5k run/walk is being held to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic and overdoses, acknowledge and support the grief felt by families and friends who have lost a loved one, provide hope to families who have a loved one struggling with a substance use disorder, and to provide local prevention and treatment resources. If you said yes, you should join the Ride/Run/Walk for Children at Quarry Walk! Sponsorships are also available for this fun community event that benefits BHcare’s Parent Child Resource Center (PCRC).

 

PCRC provides innovative mental health services, prevention and early intervention programs for more than 1,000 children and families in the Valley and beyond.

 

The Ride/Run/Walk for Children at Quarry Walk will take place on Sunday, June 10 at 300 Oxford Road in Oxford. The event features 15, 32 or 50 mile bike routes, 5k run and a 2k walk. Early Bird Registration for Cancer Center 5K Walk/Run

 

DERBY - Time is running out for discounted registration to The Ninth Annual 5K Walk/Run to benefit the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital.

 

This non-competitive, family-friendly event is set for 9 a.m. on Sat., Sept. 30 at the Griffin Hospital Center for Cancer Care, 350 Seymour Ave., Derby. Pre-registration is encouraged, and the first 500 registered participants will receive t-shirts. Registration is $25, but will increase to $30 after Sept. 15.

 

Proceeds are earmarked for special needs of cancer patients, such as support for transportation, groceries, and wig and salon services, as well as patient support programs at the Center for Cancer Care. In addition to funding direct patient care needs, the proceeds from this year’s 5K will support the purchase of technological advances in Griffin’s Radiation Oncology Department to provide exceptional cancer care that is comprehensive, comforting, and close to home.

 

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. with the Walk/Run kicking off at 9 a.m. Participants can walk or run individually, or form a team with their family, friends and co-workers. 17th annual walk in Derby raises $9,260 for Spooner House

DERBY - A recent walk along the Derby Greenway raised more than $9,260 for the hungry and homeless at Spooner House, at 30 Todd Road, Shelton.
 Nearly 100 people enjoyed the great weather and scenery along the Naugatuck River while helping to raise money for the services provided by Area Congregations Together, Inc.

Spooner House staff  thanks those who supported the 17th annual Walk for the Hungry and Homeless. Walkers and their supporters combined raised $1,767, while corporate sponsors contributed a total of $7,500, including in-kind support.   

This year's sponsors included platinum sponsor,  Charter Arms; gold sponsors: AD-MERICA, Unilever and Dworken, Hillman, LaMorte & Sterczala PC; silver sponsors: Calvert Safe & Lock, Webster Bank, Naugatuck Savings & Loan, First Church of Christ, Woodbridge and Aquarion Water Co.; bronze sponsors: OEM Controls Inc. and Data Tel, LLC.

Participants, support sought for MDA walk in April

NORTH HAVEN - More than 100 people are registered to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the 2014 Mohegan Sun Southern New England MDA Muscle Walk to help pay tribute to - and raise funds for - children and adults served by MDA in Connecticut.
    

"We want to encourage people in the State of Connecticut to give back to local families affected by neuromuscular disease," said MDA Area Director Chasity Bothman.
"By supporting the MDA Muscle Walk event on April, 12, 2014, people can make an immediate difference and help raise awareness and funds for research and vital services benefiting families served by the Association. This event provides those affected a chance to rally and fight back against neuromuscular disease."

The annual Mohegan Sun Southern New England MDA Muscle Walk is scheduled for noon April 12, 2014 at Mohegan Sun.

Seymour teen is an inspiration

I was inspired Wednesday after I met an amazing Seymour High School student.

Alex Steinbrick, 15, is clearly someone who won't let any obstacles get in the way of accomplishing what he wants to accomplish.

He and his mom, Ellen Steinbrick, are helping plan the third annual Walk 4 Hearing to be held June 8 at Mortensen Park in Hartford.

Alex may have a hearing disability and many medical issues, but he also is blessed with lots of determination that will help him reach his goals.

Those people who complain about minor annoyances and setbacks need to take a page from Alex's play book. He surely will inspire them.


 

Derby walk raises more than $10K for Spooner House

DERBY - The Spooner House walk last Saturday at the Derby Greenway earned more than $10,250 for hungry and homeless in their care. More than 100 people participated in the walk this year.  

Spooner House thanks those who supported the 16^th annual Walk for the Hungry and Homeless including  the walkers and their supporters, along with the corporate sponsors.

Valley resident to walk for St. Jude hospital

I am writing to let you know that I am on the committee for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Fairfield County Give thanks.Walk.
This event will be held Nov. 17 at the Trumbull Mall.
Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. at the food court and the walk starts at 7:30 a.m. It takes place indoors and is a family-friendly walk.

If you are not familiar with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, I encourage you to check out its website and learn more about the organization. 

If you are interested in participating in the walk and would like to join Team Mad Hatter, you can do so by clicking this link: Team Mad Hatter for St. Jude.

Our team goal is $1,000 and the entire committee goal is $45,000 - although we are only at $22,860.80 right now.

Walk raises funds for Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness

Naugatuck resident turns her dream into a reality

Jamie DeCicco accomplished her goal, and then some.

The Naugatuck mother of four who organized Saturday's breast-cancer walk at Linden Park in Naugatuck raised almost $2,000.

She told me was thrilled with the turnout, and plans to organize another walk next October to support The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby.

 

As a breast cancer survivor and patient at The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness I'd like to sincerely thank DeCicco for her hard work and dedication, and congratulate her on her successful event.

My daughter Allegra and I walked the track and husband Ralph was there to cheer us on. Even
though the pre-Sandy skies were overcast, the foliage along the Naugatuck River was pretty.

These girls, all dressed in pink, were ready to sell baked goods, pink wristbands, and rings. Pictured from left are DeCicco's daughter, Carmen, 10, her niece, Naomi, 9, and Emily Fanzutti, 16, daughter of Mary Fanzutti, a breast cancer survivor.

Griffin Hospital Community Outreach representative and Valley Parish Nurse Maggie Sessa provided participants with information about breast cancer awareness and prevention, as well as info on other health-related topics.

And of course there were beautiful cupcakes for sale, baked and decorated by one of DeCicco's relatives. I got there too late to take a photo of the full amount. They looked delicious!

Congrats again to DeCicco and her husband, Sebastian, for making this a fun event.

I'm looking forward to next October's walk, when the Valley Goes Pink once again.

Walk in Naugatuck to benefit Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness

Last week I met Naugatuck resident Jamie DeCicco who is a wife, mother of four, and I daresay a human dynamo.

A little over a month ago she took it upon herself to organize a walk to benefit The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby.
DeCicco, who was wearing lots of pink and sporting some pinkness in her brown hair when I met her, said she decided to hold the event in honor of her mother, who is a breast cancer survivor.
 
Her husband, Sebastian DeCicco, has been at her side helping her in this major endeavor. She said she is grateful for the support she has received from friends, neighbors, business people, the Naugatuck school system, the Nagugatuck Youth Soccer Association, and others too numerous to mention.

She and her husband are doing all they can to make the event a success.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the walk from 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday at Linden Park on Linden Street in Naugatuck is one of the last events in a string of activities that have been held to support Griffin Hospital's The Valley Goes Pink initiative.

Registration is $20, and participants are getting sponsors to pay them for the number of laps they complete along the park's track.

My daughter and I will be lacing up our sneakers Saturday to participate in the walk.

Seymour event to honor survivors, remember victims

SEYMOUR - The third annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, hosted by 
First Selectman W. Kurt Miller and the employees of the Town of Seymour for Seymour Pink, Inc., will be held Oct. 14.

Check in is from noon to 12:30 p.m. at Seymour Community Center .

Opening ceremonies will be at 12:30 p.m. and the walk begins at 1 p.m. A reception will follow at Hot Tamale Mexican Grill & Bar,  39 New Haven Road.


The event to benefit Seymour Pink, Inc. asks men to walk one mile to promote breast cancer awareness, to honor those fighting, and to remember those that have passed on.

High heels encouraged, not required 
Men are encouraged to wear high heel shoes. It's not easy walking in these shoes, but it is fun for a great cause! It's not a requirement to wear heels, but it is necessary to wear pink.

Participants are welcome to invite their families and friends to support them in the walk by pledging on the attached form or joining them as they walk.

All registrations include a food voucher for the reception at Hot Tamale's at the end of the walk.
Early bird registration, $25, received by Oct. 4. T-shirt is guaranteed.
Normal Registration: $30, received after Oct. 4. T-shirts are not guaranteed. Day of event registration is also available at the Community Center. All registrations are nonrefundable.

SHELTON - Five combat wounded veterans, four wounded in Vietnam and one wounded in Iraq, helped to form an eight-person team which participated in the 3rd Annual Sunset Run For The Warriors® Aug.19 to raise money for Hope For The Warriors®. 
The team members participated in either the 7K run or a shorter walk while raising $700 for wounded troops and their families.

The team was formed to support the newly reactivated AMVETS Internet Post 43 which has a mission of “To assist and inform veterans of Afghanistan, Iraqi, and the Global War On Terrorism.”
A total of the 65 new members recruited in the last year and a half have been post 911 veterans. 
The AMVETS are the most inclusive of all the veterans' organizations - the only requirement is an honorable discharge, regardless of where the veteran served. 
Active duty servicemen and women, National Guard and Reserve personnel are eligible for membership.
