Derby, CT (May 2019) Do you love cycling events? Do you like to walk? Do you want to support children and families in your community? If you said yes, you should join the Ride/ /Walk for Children at Quarry Walk! Sponsorships and exhibitor spaces are also available for this fun community event that benefits BHcare’s Parent Child Resource Center (PCRC). Endless opportunities to participate!

PCRC provides innovative mental health services, prevention and early intervention programs for more than 900 children and families in the Valley and beyond. 

The Ride/Walk for Children at Quarry Walk will take place on Sunday, June 9 at 300 Oxford Road in Oxford. The event features 15, 36 or 50 mile bike routes plus a new MEGA 35 mile bike challenge and a 2k walk. This year’s walk is in honor of Wade Michael Prajer. A loving son, brother, nephew, grandson and friend, Wade’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 22. While nothing will ever replace the light Wade brought to his community, PCRC will honor his life while raising awareness and resources to provide help and restore hope to others in crisis.

This year’s event also features a FREE Family Fun Fest that includes a bounce house, Touch-a-Truck, live music, food, beverages, yard games and a special performance by 12-time National Champion Stunt Biker Rider Mike Steidley. 

Participants are encouraged to form teams and collect donations online. Registration fee is $50 per cyclist, $20 for walkers, and children 10 and under are $10. Register today at http://bit.ly/RW4Kids.

Derby School Board Nabs Awards

DERBY – The Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) has recognized the Derby Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Matthew J. Conway, Jr. for exhibiting excellence in educational communication by honoring them with the Bonnie B. Carney Award.  

In 1975, CABE established the Awards of Excellence in Educational Communication to

recognize the good work done on a daily basis.      

The board won awards in two submissions in the Excellence for Educational Communication.  The first is for its use of social media, utilizing its website, YouTube account, Facebook and 27 Twitter handles to communicate district information and promote and broadcast events to families and the community.  The second award was for Irving School’s broadcast news network, W-IRV News, which is a daily broadcast of school news and events to keep families and the community aware of the happenings at the elementary school.  

In addition, the board was awarded Honorable Mention in two categories: the district

calendar and the Derby Public School’s Budget Presentation to the Board of Apportionment

and Taxation.   

“The Derby Board of Education was happy to hear that our school system won the Bonnie B. Carney Award for Excellence in Educational Communications,” said Board Chairman Jim Gildea. “We recognize the importance of ensuring all relevant stakeholders are communicated with regularly.  We recognize that it takes a community to educate our students and we are excited that our efforts to communicate with our parents, students, staff and community members has been noticed.”    

Conway echoed similar sentiments.  

“We are thrilled to receive this award again,” Conway said.  “It is recognition of the creative ways staff and students have engaged in communicating with each other, our board, parents and the community at large.  They model effective communication and use social media as a way to share the great things going on in our schools and classrooms.”

DERBY- Now is the time to think about applying to TEAM Inc. for assistance with winter heating costs. Families and individuals seeking financial help to offset their winter heating bills may now apply.

Families and individuals may qualify for help if they fall below these income limits: $24,280 for a household of one, $32,920 for a two-person household, $41,560 for a three-person household, $50,200 for a four-person household.

Applicants are deemed eligible based on review of their total household gross income, such as job earnings, unemployment compensation, social security, pension etc.; household size; and liquid assets. If an applicant is approved for assistance, TEAM will make direct payments to their home heating provider.

Both homeowners and renters who are residents of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Milford, Orange, Oxford, Seymour, Shelton, and Woodbridge can apply for energy assistance.

Valley YMCA in Ansonia to mark Healthy Kids Day

Nationwide initiative aims to improve families' health 

On April 27, the 11 Central Connecticut Coast YMCA branches are celebrating YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day^® with free community events that encourage kids to get moving and learning, and families living healthier. 

The Valley YMCA is at 12 State St., Ansonia.

Healthy Kids Day, the YMCA's national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, takes place at 1,900 Ys and kick-starts healthier behaviors now and throughout the summer, a critical out-of-school time for children’s health.

Many U.S. children do not get the daily recommended hours of physical activity and reading, and daily amounts of healthy foods.

According to the latest findings of the YMCA’s Family Health Snapshot – a survey of parents that gauges their children’s activity levels during the school year – only 19 percent of children get 60 minutes of physical activity, only 17 percent read books for fun, and only 12 percent eat at least eight fruits and vegetables daily.

“At the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA, we know parents struggle to keep their kids physically and intellectually active every day. We want to help ensure fewer kids are at risk of childhood obesity and more kids excel in school,” said Christian Engle, Senior Vice President & COO, Central Connecticut Coast Y. 

“YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day will get kids moving and learning while also helping families get a jump on creating a healthier summer, and ultimately a healthier future.”

Research shows that without access to out-of-school physical and learning activities, kids fall behind academically and gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year.

On April 27, YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day will help parents begin thinking early about what their kids need to grow and achieve all summer long.

Health, safety fair to feature family fun

11th annual event planned Sept. 16

SHELTON  - The 11th Annual Children’s Health and Safety Fair will take on a Family Carnival theme, providing free food, fun, and games along with a variety of health, wellness and safety programs and displays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, One Positive Place.

Sponsored by the Valley Parish Nurses of Griffin Hospital, the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley, and Griffin Faculty Practice Primary Care, the fair will feature carnival games, a moon bounce and magic show.

Free food, drinks and healthy snacks will be available.

Other activities include health, wellness and safety interactive displays, a car seat and bike helmet clinic, the Child Identification Program (CHIP), fire engines, safe house rescue vehicles, and much more. Free bike helmets will be available for the first 300 children.

Attendees also will have an opportunity to tour the Griffin Hospital Mobile Health Resource Van, featuring books, magazines, pamphlets, Internet access, audio and video, and other health education materials. Nurses will be available to answer a variety of health-related questions.

The Griffin Hospital Valley Parish Nurse program was established in 1990 and is now one of the largest in the country, with nearly 40 participating churches, more than 125 parish nurses, and 350 additional volunteers who support the nurses and who serve on the health cabinets of the individual churches.

The Boys & Girls Club provides, in a safe environment, programs that inspire, educate, guide, and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.

Griffin Faculty Practice Primary Care is a multi-specialty medical group affiliated with Griffin Hospital, offering exceptional, personalized care to residents in the Lower Naugatuck Valley and surrounding communities at our conveniently located offices in Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton.
