SEYMOUR - The Jr. Pee Wee Cheerleaders had plenty to cheer about this week after being honored by their hometown for their recent win at a national competition in Orlando.
The 24-member squad took fifth place in its division during the Pop Warner National Cheerleading/Dance Competition held Dec. 4 at the ESPN sports complex.
The girls were honored during the Jan. 8 Board of Selectmen meeting. Sporting their blue and gold uniforms, and large blue and gold bows in their ponytails, the squad showed the selectmen their spirit by performing a cheer.

According to their coaches, the girls began sharpening their flips, jumps, twists, and cheers in August, faithfully practicing several hours a night, five days a week. Their hard work paid off prior to entering the nationals in Orlando.
The girls landed first place win in the Southern Connecticut Pop Warner Competition held in October, which advanced them to the New England Regionals held in Massachusetts, where they also placed first in their division, and earned them a spot at the nationals.
Head Coach Colleen McClellan, along with Assistant Coaches Christine Baxter, Kelly Cunningham, and Cheryl Michaud, couldn’t be more proud of the hard work, dedication, team work and spirit exhibited by girls, saying “they cheered their hearts out,” all while maintaining excellent grades in school.
“Not only did these girls work very hard practicing their cheer routine, they were very dedicated and at times had to miss sleepovers, parties, Bingo at school and other fun events in order to stay loyal to their team,” the coaches said in a statement.
“This 2012 Seymour Jr. Pee Wee Cheer Team surely knows what team commitment is all about. We are extremely proud of all these girls.”
First Selectman Kurt Miller applauded the girls’ accomplishment, and said his own daughter was thrilled to recently meet the squad and plans to become a cheerleader. He presented each girl with a certificate, showing the town’s appreciation for their achievement.
The squad members include: Isabella Andrade, Jenna Baxter, Kaylee Buono, Lauren Cunningham, Mackenzie Dargel, Taylor Dauphinais, Ashley Deicicchi, Alexa Donahue, Jenna Fette, Katelyn Fette, Janessa Fontanez, Jasmine Franco, Samantha Fraser, Ashley Gabianelli, Lindsay Ganim, Natalie Gawlak, Ashley Hennessey, Lorena Lanzieri, Chloe Martins, Samantha Massie, Emma McClellan, Alison Michaud, Ashleigh Persico and Grace Rennison.
