Talk at Ansonia nature center to highlight impact of urbanization on wildlife

ANSONIA - The Natural History Lecture Series continues at 7 p.m. April 19 at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center with a talk on how urbanization affects Long Island Sound watershed.

Dr. Vincent Breslin of Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven will explore the environmental consequences of the historic urbanization and industrialization affects the watershed.

After World War II the area around Long Island Sound experienced a major population influx with a huge increase in residential, commercial and recreational development.

These changes increased pollution, changed the surface of the land, and destroyed open space. Disposal of waste materials increased dramatically, and paving over land reduced the filtration and processing functions of a natural landscape.

What has been the impact over the years on native wildlife species? How are the health of plants and animals affected? Are Long Island Sound oysters and fish fit to eat?

Come to learn the answers to these important questions. Call 203-736-1053 to register for this free program.
The center is at 10 Deerfield Road.
