Griffin to offer fall prevention program

DERBY - An upcoming program at Griffin Hospital aims to put those in danger of disastrous fall on the path to safety.
Sponsored by the Griffin’s Rehabilitation Services, Community Outreach Program and Lifeline Service, the free event will take place from 10-11 a.m. July 20 at the Griffin Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Gym, 300 Seymour Ave.
The event is open to anyone at risk of falling, including the elderly, and those with certain medical conditions, as well as their families. Attendees will learn about:
  • Fall statistics;
  • How to assess their home environment to prevent falls;
  • A progressive exercise routine that can help improve balance and core muscle strength;
  • How to assess themselves in the event of a fall;
  • How to get up safely from a fall;
  • When to call for help.

“We’re giving people the information they need to limit their risk for a fall and what to do in the event of a fall,” said Eunice A. Lisk, MS, manager of Griffin’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. “Even seemingly small falls can be very dangerous if a person doesn’t know what to do after a fall. For instance, people on blood-thinner medication should call their doctor after a fall to make sure they don’t have internal bleeding.”
The event will include a review of attendees’ medications by a nurse to spot any potentially dangerous interactions and information of Griffin Hospital Lifeline, a medical monitoring service for those at risk of a fall risk.

The above is a press release from Griffin Hospital.
