Hospital to offer free prostate-cancer screenings

Griffin Hospital will provide free prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests to men at the Oxford Center Fire House Car Show July 28.
Sponsored by the Health Initiative for Men (HiM), and Griffin’s Community Outreach Program, the PSA test will be conducted on the hospital’s Mobile Health Resource Van along with free blood pressure screenings.
PSA is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland. Healthcare workers on the van will take a small blood sample from participants which will be sent to a laboratory to be measure the level of PSA in the blood.
A high PSA level could be an indication of prostate cancer.
With the leadership and generosity of Ansonia businessman Frank Michaud, partner with Michaud and Accavallo, CPAs, LLC in Ansonia, and his wife, Judy, Griffin Hospital launched HiM in 2011 to help inspire men to have an annual physical and raise awareness about men's health issues, such as prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. For more information about HiM, visit www.griffinhealth.org/him.
Griffin Hospital representatives will be at the event to talk about HiM and the Griffin Faculty Practice Plan, a group of primary care physicians with offices in Derby, Oxford, Shelton and Seymour.
The Oxford Center Fire House Car Show will be held from 3-8 p.m. July 28 at the Oxford Center Fire House, 484 Oxford Center Road, Oxford. For information about the car show, call 203-881-1141.

The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system. Prostate cancer is a malignant tumor of the prostate gland. The prostate gland is located directly beneath the bladder and in front of the rectum. Many men, especially those later in life have made the decision with their doctors to simply watch and wait.

Its really good to see that hospitals are starting to roll out this kind of service. making sure men have a healthy and prime prostate should be a top priority nowadays.
