DERBY - Griffin Hospital celebrated its nurses with a recent Nurses’ Week luncheon and awards ceremony.
Originally developed by the Visiting Nurse Association
of South Central Connecticut, the Nightingale Award celebrates
outstanding nurses and elevates the nursing profession.
The goals of the Nightingale Award program are to encourage retention, inspire future nurses, focus public attention and recognize the breadth and scope of nursing practice at the local level. Kate Topazio also won the hospital’s Mary Schumacher Leadership Award along with Ellen Demagistris of Prospect.

Shelton resident Amy
Jones earned the hospital’s Outstanding Nurse of the
Year Award.
The 11-year employee started working at Griffin Hospital as a staff nurse in the Emergency Department where she showed sound clinical judgment and excellent assessment skills, quickly earning the role of charge nurse.

“Amy’s
clinical expertise as well as leadership skills have led her to excel,”
Griffin Hospital VP of Patient Services Barbara Stumpo said during the
awards ceremony.
“Her cool, calm demeanor - no matter what the situation - quickly puts the staff at ease. She is a resource to the staff and has earned the respect of all.”

The
celebration also recognized Sonia Nadon of Shelton, with the Marie
Santini Perioperative Nursing Excellence Award; Cheryl Tompkins of
West Haven, with the
Richard Stivala, M.D., Obstetric Nursing Excellence Award; Jennifer
Ostravag, of Bridgeport, with the Mary Nelligan Award for Continuing
Education, and Jennifer Henry of Shelton, with the Donald Torok
Memorial Scholarship.
Anesthesiologist
Mary Turman of Cheshire, was named Griffin Hospital’s 2014
Physician of the Year. The annual award is based
on voting by the hospital’s nursing staff, which selected Turman
based on compassion, kindness and professionalism.
Turman has
been a member of the Griffin Hospital Medical Staff since 2011 and is
also a member of Medical Anesthesiology Associates,
P.C in Shelton.
