Derby Neck Library lists June activities

Readathon, Tai Chi demo on tap

    DERBY - June kicks off summer reading programs for children at Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.
    Come join us for “Dream Big…Read!” and start reading with our package of free materials enclosed in a fun library bag given out at your sign-up.

    Mothers who read to their pre-readers are also eligible to join.

  Come enjoy Dierdre Murtha with singing and dancing at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. June 14. The session is suitable for pre-schoolers.

    At 6 p.m. June 20  Junior Nightowls, grades K-3 meet to enjoy Starlab, a portable planetarium.
    At 7 p.m. Grades 3-6 meet for “Out of this World,” also presented by Starlab.
    At 10:30 a.m. June 26, join us for Sparky’s Puppets and “Adventures in Dreamland”, about a baby bear who cannot sleep.

Tai Chi

    From 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, enjoy a free lesson in Tai Chi, taught by an experienced and informative instructor.
     Six weeks of paid instruction will follow for those participants who wish to continue.
    Dress comfortably for stretching techniques are involved.
    This is a light exercise that promotes spiritual well-being, balance, and overall body health. 

Culture Club
   
    On June 18 from 12:30-1:30 p.m., the library hosts the Culture Club, a literary discussion group.
    This month’s topic will be summer poems (free copies are available at the meeting).  Bring a light lunch, and coffee and tea will be served for free. 

Tweens and Teens


    Summer events for tweens and teens (graduating 5th grade—graduating 12th grade) begin in June.
     Readathon takes place beginning June 21—come into the library for details on how to win prizes as you read your way through the summer.
    On June 21 Video Game Tournament 1 begins. Join us from, 2 to 4 p.m. to compete in a fast-paced, multi-player game on the Wii.
    Registration, in person, or at 203-734-1492, is strongly recommended.

Movie Night

    On Thurs., June 28 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., teens and tweens meet at the library for Teen Movie Night. 
    First movie of the summer is “The Dark Knight” shown on Blu-Ray. Refreshments will be served free.
    No registration required; just come on in and bring your friends.
