Griffin Hospital volunteers offer shuttle service

DERBY - Volunteers at Griffin Hospital are adding a little ‘vim’ to visitors’ experiences with the hospital’s courtesy shuttle. Driving a six-seat golf cart, volunteers transport hospital guests to and from any location in the main parking lot to the front door of the hospital.
The shuttle service is one of many that Griffin Hospital’s volunteers provide to make sure patients and guest have a pleasant experience.
“This is a great job – everyone really seems to appreciate when I whisk around in the cart and offer them a ride to the front door,” said Bill Richter of Oxford, a hospital volunteer since 2007. “With every patient, visitor or employee who steps on board for a ride, I feel like I’ve helped – and after all, that’s why I’m here – to offer my help which is what happens each and every time someone sits on the shuttle.”
Typically working four-hour shifts, the volunteer shuttle drivers are encouraged to enjoy a complimentary meal in the hospital cafeteria after they complete their shift.
Job qualifications for courtesy shuttle drivers include a stellar driving record, using good judgment and safe driving skills while being courteous to customers. Drivers must be at least 18 years of age.
Richter also volunteers as an ambassador at Griffin, greeting and welcoming patients as they come into the hospital.
The work of volunteers is part of the hospital’s patient-centered Planetree model of care. Griffin has earned local, national and international recognition and praise for its unique facility, innovative programs and services.
