BRIDGEPORT — A judge has scheduled a hearing to determine whether prosecutors have enough evidence against a man charged with hacking another man to death with an ax and eating part of his brain and other body parts.
Judge Robert Devlin Jr. on Tuesday set a probable cause hearing for March 5 in Bridgeport Superior Court in the case of Tyree Smith, 35, an Ansonia native who was arrested in Lynn Haven, Fla., last month.
Smith is charged with murdering Angel Gonzalez in Bridgeport on Dec. 15. Police say Smith ate one of Gonzalez’s eyeballs and part of his brain.
The Connecticut Post reports that Gonzalez’s relatives cried during Smith’s brief court appearance Tuesday. They say Smith deserves a life prison sentence.
Smith’s public defender declined to comment.
