Seymour's Brian Cleveland lends helping hand to Darfuri players

They played soccer on desert sand with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. Some wore used cleats, others sprinted up and down the field in their bare feet. The goal posts and crossbars were made of metal, but with no net. Cones marked the boundaries.
These were the playing conditions for the Darfuri refugees at Camp Djabal in Eastern Chad, who recently competed for a spot on Darfur United. The team will compete in Iraq next month at the Viva World Cup, a tournament held for nations that are unaffiliated with FIFA.
Brian Cleveland, a 7th grade social studies teacher at Seymour Middle School and a Seymour High School junior varsity soccer coach, took an 11-day trip with the i-ACT organization to the camp. He served as an assistant coach for Darfur United, before returning home Sunday morning.
