DERBY - Griffin Hospital will host an AARP Driver Safety Program from 8:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Sept. 15 at the hospital, 130 Division St. 

 

The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation's first and largest refresher course for drivers. While the course is geared toward drivers age 50 and older, the course is open to everyone.

 

The training is designed to help you learn current rules of the road, how to operate your vehicle more safely in today's increasingly challenging driving environment, and make some adjustments to common age-related changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time.

 

The course also covers such topics as how to maintain proper following distance at all times; the safest way to change lanes and make turns at intersections; the effects of medications on driving; how to minimize the effect of dangerous blind spots; the importance of eliminating distractions, such as eating, smoking, and cell-phone use; proper use of safety belts, air bags, and anti-lock brakes and ways to monitor your own and others' driving skills and capabilities.

 

Participants will gain a greater appreciation of driving challenges and how they can avoid potential collisions and injuries to themselves and others. As an added bonus, participants can check with their auto insurance company about discounts for completing the course.

 

The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Make checks payable to “AARP.”

Conroy to Hold Livable Communities Forum

 

 

DERBY- State Representative Theresa Conroy (D-Seymour, Beacon Falls, Derby) is hosting a forum on livable communities on June 9th at the Derby Senior Center.  

 

The “Road to Livability” is an AARP program designed to provide individuals and families with tools to create a place where you can live in comfort and safety no matter what stage of life.  The 45 minute workshop includes a comprehensive packet of resources, step-by-step visuals to follow during the discussion and tools to get you started today!  Learn more at www.aarp.org/livable.

Shelton AARP commends Kelly for support of seniors

State Sen. Kevin Kelly, R-Stratford, ranking member on the General Assembly’s Aging Committee, accepted the AARP Legislative Achievement Award at the June 10 Installation Luncheon of the Shelton AARP. 
The award recognizes Kelly’s efforts to support residents age 50 and over throughout 2013.

Kelly was recognized for his leadership in strengthening community services and caregiver supports that give individuals the choice to age with dignity in their own homes.

“We commend you for your outstanding advocacy on behalf of older adults,” said Nora Duncan, AARP State Director, in a letter to Kelly. “Because of your legislative work, Connecticut is better positioned to meet the fiscal and personal challenges of an aging population in a way that respects individual choice and personal dignity.”

Kelly is committed to addressing issues that impact quality of life for Connecticut’s seniors.  He supported new laws that help seniors age in place, remaining in their own homes or community settings regardless of age or disability.

New laws in support of aging in place require outreach to seniors about the supplemental nutrition assistance program, improvements to elder abuse reporting, and a public awareness campaign to teach seniors and caregivers how to resist aggressive marketing tactics and scams.

A “Livable Communities” initiative was also established in 2013, which serves as a forum for review of best practices and resources to help people age in place. 

This is the third consecutive year Kelly was honored with the Legislative Achievement Award. Kelly’s awards recognize his persistent dedication to expanding home and community-based options, enhancing training opportunities for long-term care services and enhancing family caregiver supports.

Kelly received his award recognizing his 2013 accomplishments at a meeting at Molto Bene Restaurant in Ansonia.
