Ansonia Nature Center Announces July Programs/Events

JULY 2017, Calendar of Events, Ansonia Nature & Recreation Center

REGISTER NOW FOR SUMMER NATURE DAYS!!!
 Mon. July 31–Fri. Aug. 4, Mon. Aug. 7–Fri. Aug. 11 (FULL), Mon. Aug. 14–Fri. Aug. 18, 9 am–3 pm.                 
For children from 5 to 11 years old who love the outdoors and wildlife, these popular classes will be not only educational but also a chance to explore the 156 acres the park offers. We explore a variety of the park’s habitats. A great choice for a fun late-summer experience!
TUITION: $150 priority students (Ansonia residents and FANCI members), $175 all others. 

CREATURES OF LONG ISLAND SOUND –Thurs. July 6, 11 amThis is a great weekday family program to learn all about the creatures of Long Island Sound. We will explore the Nature Center’s salt water tank and learn how to identify and hold common critters you will find at New England’s local beaches this summer. FEE: $6 per person.

DEEP FAMILY FISHING CLASS – Sat. July 8, 9 am–2 pmThe Nature Center is sponsoring this CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection C.A.R.E. Program class. The topics covered by the 2-hour classroom instruction are • Connecticut Waters • Fish Identification • How & Where Fish Live • Fishing Tackle & Techniques • Fishing Laws& Regulations • How to Tie a Strong Knot • How to Clean & Cook Your Catch • Sportsmanship & Safety • How to Cast The instruction will be immediately followed by fishing with the instructors in Redwing Pond. All equipment will be provided. Adults over the age of 16 must have a fishing license to participate in the fishing event. This FREE program, taught by Certified DEEP C.A.R.E. Instructors, is open to everyone 7 years old and up; children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult. MOONSHINE AND FIREFLY HIKE – Sun. July 9, 8 pmFollow the Nature Center’s ranger along our wooded paths looking for glowworms in the leaf litter under the light of the moon.  We’ll end the hike with a show by beetles in the Lampyridae family, better known as lightning bugs and fireflies. FEE: $3 per person. Wear shoes for hiking.

MONDAY NIGHT TRAIL RUN – Mondays starting July 10, 5:30-6:30 pmThis is a call to all of the runners who want something that is out of the ordinary! Ranger Dan will lead you through our 156-acre network of trails, while you burn off the weekend's extra calories. We guarantee that this FREE program is the best way to start off your week.  Please register.

FAMILY ORGANIC GARDEN PROGRAM – Tuesdays, July 11, 18, 25; Aug. 1, 8, 15; Sept. 5, 12, 19, 26ANC will be continuing family-friendly activities in our organic garden. Learn about growing a variety of fruits and vegetables. Dress appropriately; keep in mind you will get water and soil on your clothing. FREE, with the potential to take home fresh local produce!

CHRIS ROWLANDS: Puppeteer and Singer – Fri. July 28, 7 pmChris Rowlands is an award-winning singer and songwriter who offers an interactive kid-friendly presentation for those who love music and nature.  Chris brings animals to life through song, dance, puppets, and colorful props, to teach children about animals and their habitats.

Library hosts Teen Movie Night



DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites young adults ages 12 to 17 to Teen Movie Night.
It will be Dec. 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., when the library will show a newly released DVD.
Refreshments will be provided. Registration is requested.

From women's issues to technology, Derby Neck offers variety of programs


DERBY - The Women’s Forum will meet 12:30-1:30 p.m. March 18 at Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.
This monthly discussion group focuses on literature, history, the news, and more in exploring women’s lives.
March will feature women’s history as found in recipes, household hints, and etiquette from various eras.
Participants are invited to bring a light lunch; the library will serve free coffee and tea.

Teen Movie Night
At  6 p.m. March 19 the Library will host Teen Movie Night. Bring your friends to enjoy a blu-ray/big screen showing of a comedy “Wreck-it-Ralph.”
Tweens are also invited. Pizza and other refreshments will be served for free.

Tech Talks
From 10:30-11:30 a.m. March 20 the library begins a series of presentations by the staff called Tech Talks.
Join us to be informed of the latest ideas coming from the technology we encounter in our everyday lives. Our first presentation is on e-mail - how to use it most effectively and problem areas to avoid, such as choosing a password. The basics of setting up an account for the first time will be included.

Writers' Round
At 6:30 p.m. March 21 the Writers’ Round will meet. This is a workshop sessions for writers of all genres—poetry, fiction, scriptwriting, etc.
Bring your original works to share, or just join in to get your creativity flowing.

Current Events Club
At 6:30 p.m. March 26 the library will offer Current Events Club, a group that meets monthly to discuss the news—including the arts, finance, politics, and more. It's an interesting way to hear what is happening, what it means, and to share your own ideas.

'Health Matters'
At 6:30 p.m. March 27 the library will present another talk in the series "Health Matters.”  Our speakers are provided by the Valley Parish Nurses and Griffin Hospital. These experts share their knowledge with you and take your questions.
This month’s talk is on how to evaluate the risk of falling and avoid it.

Autumn events planned in the Valley



Happy October!

Here are just
some of the fun events coming up this month:

In Ansonia, the ninth annual Harvest Festival will be held downtown from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, with a rain date of Oct. 13. Admission is free.


Emmett O'Brien Technical High School, 141 Prindle Ave., Ansonia will hold its third annual Car Show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2. 


Autumnfest will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road. Admission is free.


The next day an educational Fall Foliage Hike with Ranger Martin Wigglesworth will be held at the nature center. The free event starts at 1 p.m. Oct. 21.


Also at the nature center, a Harvest Moon Hike is slated for 7 p.m.  Oct. 27.  The program is free.

In Derby,  the fourth annual Griffin Hospital 5K Walk/Run will step off at 9 a.m. Saturday. The event benefits the hospital's Center for Cancer Care. This year's fund-raising goal is $100,000.

Also in Derby, the Valley Arts Council will host an opening reception for its next show, "'Magic & Mysticism: The Art of Believing," from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Gallery@37, at 37 Elizabeth St. The show will run through Nov. 3. The public is invited.


The Derby Cultural Commission will hold second its annual Haunted Lantern Tour at various sites downtown starting at 7 p.m. Oct. 20. The event starts at the gazebo on the Derby Green. Admission is $5.

In Seymour, the grassroots' initiative Seymour Pink, Inc. will host several activities to raise awareness of breast cancer as well as funds for several nonprofit organizations that fight the disease.

At 9 a.m. Saturday the group's first-ever 5K road race,
Pounding the Pavement for Pink, will step off from the Community Center, 20 Pine St., Seymour.

After the race the second annual Smoke in the Valley craft beer and chili fest will be held at the Community Center and along Bridge Street.


Also on Saturday the fourth annual "Touch-A-Truck” event will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Great Hill United Methodist Church, 225 Great Hill Road (junction of Routes 334 and 188).
The event will feature a series of kids' fall festival activities including tractor rides, a bounce house, face painting, kids' events and give-aways, pumpkin decorating, and an indoor book sale, along with Great Hill’s famous Home Bake Sale.   

And the 7th annual Haunted Trails Festival will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at Chatfield Park and Legion Pool; rain date is Oct. 14. Admission is $6. Activities for those with special needs will take place from 3 to 5 p.m., with “less scary” tours of the trail, and Halloween-themed games. At 12:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Community Center, Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller will host the third annual Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event to kick off Seymour Pink Week.

Shelton Day, sponsored by the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday along Howe Avenue. Admission is free.
