Puzzle tourney, bat program, movies and more planned at Derby Neck

August activities slated at library
DERBY - The Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. offers a variety of programs for August.

There will be a Teen Jigsaw Puzzle Tournament in 3-D at 2 p.m. Aug. 4.

Teens and their friends may work solo or in a team to assemble their 3-D puzzles and compete for a grand prize.
All completed puzzles may be taken home. Free refreshments will be served. Registration requested. 

Program about bats

From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 5 kids and their parents are invited to a program on the Wonderful World of Bats, including a slide show and audio presentation.
This program includes an opportunity to craft a Bat T-shirt—bring your own shirt with you, or you may purchase one that day for $4.
This program best suits kids ages 5 and older.  Registration requested.

Ancient Games

At 6 p.m. Aug. 5 join us for our monthly event, Ancient Games.  All teens and adults are invited to learn and compete at Go, Mancala, Parcheesi, Chess, and more.
All materials and instructions are provided by the library. 

Movie Night
All teens are invited to the Library for an I-Spy Movie Night at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 6.
Our feature film shown on Blu-ray is ” Divergent.” Teens compete for prizes by following clues while watching the movie.
Free refreshments are served, including a pizza dinner at intermission.  Only 20 seats are available; call to register.

At 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7 all adults are invited for Dinner and a Movie Night.
This month’s feature film, shown on blu-ray is “The Princess Bride.” A free pizza dinner will be served at intermission.  

Jazz concert

At 2 p.m. Aug. 9 there  will be a free jazz concert performed by the professional group, Too Human.
They will cover standards from the American Songbook with their unique interpretations. They combine vocals with guitars, percussion, bass, and a mouth trombone.
This ensemble is a high energy and humorous group that should not be missed. It's suitable for adults and their families.  

Video game tourney

At 1 p.m. Aug. 12 the Library will host a Teen Video Game Tournament.
Games vary each session and are played on our Wii U console. Watch the library bulletin boards for the games offered.
All teens are invited to compete for prizes: all participants get free refreshments.
Registration is not required but is strongly suggested. 

Learn science
At 6:30 p.m. Aug. 13 all kids and their parents are invited to enjoy the Science Tellers talk about Dragons and Dreams for children.
Our presenters tell a fascinating story that is interactive, showing you the almost real sights and sounds of a Dragon. Learn about some basic science too.
This program is best suited for ages 5 and older.

Singing and dancing

On Aug 14 at 10 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. Miss Deidre will be singing and dancing with young children to special summer songs.
Come to either hour, as she repeats the same program.  

Mad Science

At 10 a.m. Aug. 18 all toddlers and their parents are invited to the Library to enjoy Mad Science  for Toddlers and Children.
This event lets you have a chance to enjoy a space adventure as we will launch a rocket in our garden space.
At 10:45 a.m. children in Grades K-4 are invited to race rocket balloons and devise a balloon powered rocket car.  You can even build a space copter to take home.  Registration requested.  Bring your child to the appropriate age-session for a happy experience.

Tech Talks
August brings two sessions of Tech Talks.
At 6 p.m. Aug. 18 and again at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 20 join our staff members as they provide information and suggestions on what is new in technology and how to best  integrate it into your daily lives.
This month we feature a PowerPoint presentation on the Windows 8 operating system.  

Beach Party

Children are invited to our annual Beach Party at 3 p.m. Aug. 20. Children may wear their bathing suits and be ready to enjoy our sprinklers, baby pools, and water toys.
We also host Mr. Bungles with his giant bubble presentations up to 10 feet tall.  Bring a small picnic if you wish.  All age children are welcomed. 

Summer party

At 2 p.m. Aug. 21 all teens are invited for a party to wrap-up summer reading.  

Free refreshments will be served and prizes and gifts will be awarded to teens who have fulfilled their Tier Level reading pledges.  

Writers' Round

At 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 the monthly session of Writers’ Round for teens and adults will be held. 

This is an authors’ workshop for writers of all genres—scripts, poetry, prose, fiction, etc.
Bring your original works to share with others.

Drumming, video game tourney slated at Derby Neck Library

DERBY - Drum away the winter and welcome spring at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Derby Neck Library. 
Craig Harris performs and helps people of all ages get stress relief, while teaching the audience about percussion instruments. 
No registration is needed.  

Video tournament
From 2-4 p.m. April 26 teens and 'tweens are invited to a video games tournament at the Library, featuring New Super Mario Bros. U on a Nintendo Wii U. 
Free refreshments will be served.

Learn hula hooping, read to a dog at Derby Neck Library

Variety of activities planned in July 

DERBY - On July 8 visit the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., to meet a real chinchilla during a Tails and Tales program at 10:30 a.m.

Cindy King will tell children a fun story and introduce them to her special pet.

Eclectic Experience

At 6 p.m. July 9 enjoy the Ultimate Eclectic Experience starring keyboard player Matt Daniel.
Matt shows how he composes, and entertains with a wide range of energy-filled numbers, integrating jazz, Latin, blues, and rock and roll.
This free program of professional music is offered to adults and their families.  

Registration is suggested.

Bring the Hoopla!

At 6:30 p.m. July 10 enjoy Bring the Hoopla! This is a chance to learn or rediscover the fun of using a hula hoop. 
The group will meet in the library’s garden area for a fun evening. All hoops will be provided.
This is a great event for ages 5 and older.

From 2-4 p.m. July 11 all teens and 'tweens are invited to enjoy a Video Game Tournament.

Take part in the fun competition for prizes on a variety of games using the Wii system. Bring your friends and challenge them.
Registration is recommended, but not required. 

Read to a canine

From 3-4 p.m. July 14 the library presents B.A.R.K.—Be a Reading Kid, with Grant, a therapy dog.  Children may sign-up to read to Grant in sessions of 15-minutes. 

Women's Forum
The Women's Forum will meet from 12:30-1:30 p.m. July 15.
This group for adult women focuses on ideas from history, literature, the news, etc.  This month we will discuss the life-styles of Victorian women and girls in the U.S., circa 1880-1900. Bring your own ideas.
The moderator will have historical facts on hand. Bring a light lunch; free coffee and tea available. 

Marvelous Mutts

At 6:30 p.m. July 15 Marvelous Mutts will perform. This program, suggested for children, demonstrates a variety of tricks and agility stunts, including Frisbee catching. These wonderful rescue dogs like to show off their skills. 

Balloon animals

At 2 p.m. July 16 the famous Mr. Bungles will entertain with his amazing balloon animals.  Come enjoy his comedy show and receive your own free balloon animal. 
All ages of children are welcome.

Movie night
At 5:30 p.m. July 16  all teens and 'tweens are invited to Teen Movie Night to view the original Iron Man on high definition blu-ray.
Free refreshments will be served and a new twist is added— an “I-Spy” game. Attendees will be asked to spot clues in the movie to receive a prize.
Registration is recommended.

Music and Movement
DERBY - Bring your little ones to Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. for Bedtime Music and Movement with Miss Kathi at 6:30 p.m. April 10.
Wear pajamas if you wish and bring along a favorite stuffed animal to sing and dance with.  No registration is required.

Chiropractic care

Learn of the benefits of Chiropractic Care at 6:30 p.m. April 11.
A licensed doctor will present all the aspects of good health resulting from regular chiropractic sessions.  Bring questions for the doctor. 

Video game tournament

Teens and tweens are invited to a video game tournament featuring Mario Kart on Wii at 2 p.m. April 16. Bring your skills and bring your friends for a fun afternoon. Prizes will be awarded to winners,  and there are free refreshments. No registration is required.

Read to therapy dogs

Youngsters are invited to read to therapy dog Jake from 3-4 p.m. April 14. Call ahead to register your child for a 15-minute session of reading.
From 6-7 p.m. April 17 Thor and Cosmo will be the featured dogs, and from 3-4 p.m. April 28 Grant will be the dog visiting the library.

Women's Forum

Women’s Forum, a monthly discussion group that focuses on women in the arts, politics, literature, history, and the like will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. April 15.

This session will focus on two women writers of short stories set in Maine, Ruth Moore and Virginia Chase.
Free copies of their two stories are available at the library.  Bring a light lunch; coffee and tea are provided for free.

Learn the art of origami

Children are invited for a free origami craft at 11 a.m. April 16.  Learn the Oriental art of paper folding. All  the skills taught in this program are suitable for children’s abilities.  Call ahead to register.

Tech Talks

Tech Talks, a monthly program explaining technology issues and uses for beginners will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. April 17.
This month we focus on the important issue of Internet Security, so bring your questions please.  Registration is required.

Writer's Round

Writer’s Round meets from 6:30-7:30 p.m. April 18.
This group works on its writing skills and evaluates each others’ pieces. All types of writing are welcomed: essays, fiction, on-line, poetry, and the like.

Current Events Club

Join us at 6:30 p.m. April 23 for a Current Events Club and discuss the news including the arts, politics, medicine, finance, and the like.
All are welcome to bring their ideas and opinions.
