Shelton Girl Meets Pop Star Katy Perry

Katy Perry and Gabriella Jones
SHELTON - One lucky Shelton child met Katy Perry onstage at her recent concert at Mohegan Sun, thanks to the world-famous singer and Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Katy and BGCA have joined together to help put millions of young people on the path to a great future; part of the venture included giving her fans a chance to see her live by showing their support of their local Boys & Girls Club.

The Valley's Boys & Girls Club was awarded 50 tickets for the concert at Mohegan Sun on Sept. 21, and the show was the second performance of Perry's brand new Witness tour.

At the concert, during a set which included planets and stars descending to stage level, Katy asked if any of her fans would like to help her wish upon a star.

After searching the audience, Katy selected Gabriella Jones, a member of the Raymond P. Lavietes Unit in Shelton.

Gabriella was wearing one of the special bright pink T-shirts made for the event, with a Boys & Girls Club logo on the front. When Katy brought her on stage, she asked Gabriella to wish on the star and to say what she wished for so that people could support her in her wish

After a moment of thought, Gabriella responded, “To pray for all the people that suffered from the hurricanes.”

The crowd went wild, and Katy noted that Gabriella had been “brought up right,” and with the audience, Katy and Gabriella sent love and support to all those affected by the hurricanes.

As part of the partnership with Katy Perry, $1 of every ticket purchased is donated to Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
The partnership was formed because Katy and BGCA share a commitment to improving the lives of young people through education, empowerment, and demonstrating good citizenship.
Katy is one of the most famous singers in the world and is the most-followed person on Twitter with nearly one hundred million followers.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley has been changing the lives of young people in the Valley for more than 60 years, providing safe, fun, affordable programming and constructive care for youth when they are not in school. More than 3,300 kids in four units attend our programs on a yearly basis.

SHELTON - The Boys and Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley has received a $4,500 sponsorship from the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club to support its teen program for the first quarter of 2014.
The funds are being used for staff, supplies, and activities for teens who attend the Raymond P. Lavietes Clubhouse in Shelton.

“We are deeply grateful to the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club for sponsoring our Teen Room,” said Shaye Roscoe, Boys and Girls Club Executive Director.
“These kids need us—statistics show again and again that the hours of 3-6 pm are the “danger zone” for unsupervised youth. The Boys & Girls Club offers them a positive alternative to the streets, exposing them to a team committed to their success and programming designed to help them succeed in school and in life.
"We are able to provide this quality programming to our teens because of such civic-minded organizations as the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club.”

Foundation donates bikes to Boys and Girls Clubs of Ansonia, Shelton

The Foundation for Life, Inc., a charitable organization supported by employees of Barnum Financial Group, an office of MetLife, is donating bicycles and helmets to 60 children during the Boys and Girls Club Annual Back-A-Kid Campaign Event.

At this event, First Niagara Bank will be providing the children with vouchers to the Sports Center of Shelton.

Barnum Financial Group employees will help raise the funds for the bikes and helmets. Each organization will surprise the children with their bikes and helmets.
The bikes will not only allow the children to get out into their communities but also provide a fun way to stay physically fit and healthy.

Paul Blanco, Managing Director of Barnum Financial Group and Founder of the Foundation for Life, Inc., was introduced to Bikes for Kids by the founders of the Bikes for Kids program, Bill and Debbie Pollakov.
Since 2007, the Foundation for Life, Inc. with the support of the Barnum Financial Group employees has donated over 1,500 bikes and helmets to underprivileged children throughout Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island.

The children are typically invited to a free day of family fun where they are given the additional surprise of a bike to take home.
This year alone they have enjoyed events at the Rockland Boulders Baseball Game; a Jets football game, an afternoon in the Giants' field house as well as a baseball game with the Rhode Island Pawtucket Red Sox.
Many of these children may not have ever attended a baseball game or owned a bike; which is what makes this program so special.

"At Barnum Financial Group, we are committed to making a difference in the communities we serve,” said Paul Blanco, Managing Director.
“My wife Mindee and I started the Foundation for Life as an avenue through which we and our employees could improve the lives of children and families.”

Barnum Financial Group, an Office of MetLife, provides a full range of investment and risk management products and services to over 220,000 clients including individuals and their families as well as small businesses, corporations, government entities, not-for-profit organizations and their employees.
Offices are located in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.

About the Classic

The Boys & Girls Club Golf Classic, which has run 42 consecutive years since 1972, is dedicated to John “Red” Larsen. Red participated in almost every tournament and was Chairman for more than half.

It was common to see Red stuffing “Tee-Favor Bags” on Sunday night or putting out sponsor signs in the morning mist. His love for children and his dedication to this Boys & Girls Club were rivaled only by his love for his family and the game of golf.

The Commodore Hull Thanksgiving Day Road Race Committee recently announced that the 11th annual race held last Thanksgiving netted a donation of over $11,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley.

With this year’s donation, the race has now raised more than $110,000 for the Club since the first race in 2002.
Connors said Greco & Haines became the main sponsor not only to help make the race possible, but more importantly to help all the children who benefit from the services offered at the Club.

Roscoe said the Club is grateful for all that the Race has done for the Club down through the years.
“The dollars raised have a great impact on the thousands of children who have been members of the Club in the 11-year history of the Race," she said. "We really appreciate Greco & Haines and all the other sponsors who have made this possible.”
She also noted the incredible work done by the all-volunteer committee in building the race from its inception to the great Thanksgiving tradition that it has become.

Dave Grant, who served as Chair of last year’s race said, “It was a real pleasure to serve as the Chair of such a great event and I want to thank all our volunteers who do such an incredible job putting this together and keeping our runners safe.”
He also noted that there would not be a race without the sponsors, and lastly he thanked the runners who come back year after year making the race such a success.

The race is held Thanksgiving morning and starts and ends on the Riverwalk in Shelton, but one of the unique aspects of the race is the course itself, which twice crosses the Derby/Shelton bridge on its way out and back to the mid-point at the Derby Public Library. This year's race will again be held at 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Registration begins in September. The popular race, which has more than 700 spots available, sells out  quickly.
