Chess, movies, games planned at Derby Library

Teen Summer Reading Club
DERBY - The Derby Public Library Chess Club invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to “Open Chess Call” from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays in August. All skill levels are welcome.
This program is part of DPL’s 2014 “Spark a Reaction” Teen Summer Reading Club. Registration is requested. 


Tuesday matinees
The Library hosts Tuesday Teen Matinees for patrons ages 12 to 17 from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 5 and 12.  Participants will have an opportunity to vote on the final new-release DVD to be shown for this program, part of DPL’s 2014 “Spark a Reaction” Teen Summer Reading Club.
Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is required.
YA Wednesdays
The Derby Public Library hosts “YA Wednesdays” from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug.  6 and 13.
All young adults ages 12 to 17 are invited to a variety of activities, Teen Game Night combined with Lego Construction Project, and Scrabble Tournament. 

Light refreshments will be provided.

DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites young adults ages 12 to 17 to Teen Tie-Dye from 3:30-5 p.m. July 15.
Laurie Lynn returns to provide participants new white T-shirts, dyes, and the expertise needed to create personally designed fashion statements.

Derby Library hosts 'Spark a Reaction' summer program for teens

DERBY  - The Derby Public Library hosts Teen Summer Movie Matinees for patrons ages 12 to 17 each Tuesday in July from 3-5 p.m., except July 15 which is from 1-3 p.m.
Participants will have the opportunity to vote on subsequent new-release DVD titles to be shown. This program is part of the Derby Public Library's 2014 “Spark a Reaction” Teen Summer Reading Club. Registration is requested.

Derby Neck Library offers games, women's forum, tech talk, movies and more

DERBY - A representative from Master’s Table Community Meals will visit Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. at 6:30 p.m. June 2 to describe the non-profit’s functions.
The organization offers a monthly community dinner open to the public. Other forms of assistance to those in need will also be explained.

Come learn how you can participate and also how you may aid them.
This is a free program. 

Ancient Games
At 6 p.m. June 3 the library hosts Ancient Games.
This monthly event offers participants of all ages instruction in mancala, go, parcheesi and other games of skill and strategy.  Bring a friend or relative and enjoy a free evening of fun.
Dinner and movie
At 5:30 p.m. June 5 the Library presents the movie “Her” on blu-ray and a large screen venue.  This is Dinner and a Movie Night open to people ages 18 and older.  Snacks are provided and at intermission a free pizza supper is served.  

Music and movement
At 6:30 p.m. June 11 the Library offers Bedtime Music and Movement with Miss Kathi.  Bring a favorite stuffed animal and wear your pajamas, if you wish.  We will sing and dance together under the stars.  

Women's Forum
At 12:30 p.m. June 16 the Library presents Women’s Forum, a monthly discussion group open to women of all ages.  We talk about current literature, as well as literature, history, and the arts.  This month’s topics are poems about fathers and notable graduation speeches.  Freee coffee and tea;  participants may wish to bring a light lunch.  


Tech Talks
At 6 p.m. June 16 and again and at 10:30 a.m. June the Library presents Tech Talks—a monthly series.  We feature topics dealing with new technologies and their best uses.  This month begins our evening and morning scheduling, in which a single topic is discussed at two different times of day.  Bring your questions  for our tech gurus as well.  

Writers' Round
At 6:30 p.m. June 19  the Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. hosts Writers’ Round a workshop for writers of all genres—poetry, fiction, prose, nonfiction, scripts, etc.  Writing prompts are offered to spark your creativity.  Come share your original works with other local authors.  

Summer Reading Clubs
On  June 23 the Library will begin Summer Reading Clubs—for kids in primary grades, middle school, and high school. 
Come in to pick up your starter bag to keep you stay organized and focused.  Free prizes are offered for good readers.  Teens will compete for gifts and enjoy a special scavenger game.  Challenge your friends to see who can read the most this summer; register soon.

Summer reading, chess clubs slated at Derby Public Library

DERBY - The Derby Public Library Teen Chess Club invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to meetings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. June 2, 9, and 16.
All skill levels are welcome.


Participants will learn how the game is played as well as defensive/offensive strategies. Julio Maldonado provides superb expertise from a life-long love for the game.
Registration is requested.

Derby teen readers invited to party at library

DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites members of the 2013 “Beneath the Surface” Teen Summer Reading Club to an end-of-program Dance-Off & Wrap Party, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Aug. 15.


The accomplishments of summer reading club members will be celebrated with food, music, and a drawing for the program’s grand prize winner.

Derby library to host tie-dye fun, book talk for teens

DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites young adults ages 12 to 17 to Tie-Dye T-Shirts from 3:30 to 5 p.m. July 16.

Book discussion

The Library hosts an ongoing book discussion series for  ages 12 to 17. Participants will meet at 3:30 p.m. July 24 to review Paper Towns by John Green.
One month before graduating from his Central Florida high school, Quentin "Q" Jacobsen basks in the predictable boringness of his life until the beautiful and exciting Margo Roth Spiegelman, Q's neighbor and classmate, takes him on a midnight adventure and then mysteriously disappears.
Copies will be available at the circulation desk while they last and reservations may be made by phone or on-line.
Light refreshments will be provided.

DERBY - The Derby Public Library will once again run a Summer Reading Club for
adults 18 and over.   

           Groundbreaking Reads is this summer’s theme.  
     The club will begin Monday (June 24) and run through Aug. 16.
           As participants read books of their choice, they will be asked to anonymously complete a very brief written review to share with fellow readers. These will be posted.
          They will receive a participation prize after they submit their first review.
          Weekly raffles will be held for all readers sharing for each particular week.
          All participants will be invited to a final summer Food and Fun Groundbreaking event at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 19.
          Many other special events are planned for the summer, including Wednesday Movie Matinees, magic, music, and more!

Demo to feature picnic ideas

        The Library has scheduled a cooking demo at 6:30 p.m. June 3.  Picnic recipes will be the topic of the evening. Just in time for the warm weather, Stacey Ference of Savour Catering will share delicious recipes to enjoy outdoors.  
        Great suggestions on how to pack a picnic basket with will be offered.
        There will be samples of all demonstrated foods.  The class is for ages 18 and older.  Registration is required.

Talkin' baseball      

     The Library is in its eighth season of the very popular Sports Talk series, held every Thursday at 10 a.m.  These informal sessions will meet throughout the baseball season.  Rich Marazzi, radio talk show host, author, and Major League Baseball Rules consultant facilitates. 
       Each session includes trivia contests, videos, lively conversation and more.
     All ages, rookies through veterans are invited to join Rich and his group of Silver Sluggers.  No registration is necessary.

Library to host tournament for young adults

 DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites young adults ages 12 to 17 to a Battleship Tournament from 3:30-4:30 p.m. July 11.
 “Enlist” in a special Teen Zone competition featuring this neo-classic and favorite game. The victorious will advance and continue on a coordinated date/time until we crown the “Master & Commander.”

This program is part of the DPL 2012 “Balance Your Life” Summer Reading Club and is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Jane C. and David B. Cohen Fund through the Valley Community Foundation in memory of David B. Cohen.

Derby Neck Library lists June activities

Readathon, Tai Chi demo on tap

    DERBY - June kicks off summer reading programs for children at Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave.
    Come join us for “Dream Big…Read!” and start reading with our package of free materials enclosed in a fun library bag given out at your sign-up.

    Mothers who read to their pre-readers are also eligible to join.

  Come enjoy Dierdre Murtha with singing and dancing at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. June 14. The session is suitable for pre-schoolers.

    At 6 p.m. June 20  Junior Nightowls, grades K-3 meet to enjoy Starlab, a portable planetarium.
    At 7 p.m. Grades 3-6 meet for “Out of this World,” also presented by Starlab.
    At 10:30 a.m. June 26, join us for Sparky’s Puppets and “Adventures in Dreamland”, about a baby bear who cannot sleep.

Tai Chi

    From 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, enjoy a free lesson in Tai Chi, taught by an experienced and informative instructor.
     Six weeks of paid instruction will follow for those participants who wish to continue.
    Dress comfortably for stretching techniques are involved.
    This is a light exercise that promotes spiritual well-being, balance, and overall body health. 

Culture Club
   
    On June 18 from 12:30-1:30 p.m., the library hosts the Culture Club, a literary discussion group.
    This month’s topic will be summer poems (free copies are available at the meeting).  Bring a light lunch, and coffee and tea will be served for free. 

Tweens and Teens


    Summer events for tweens and teens (graduating 5th grade—graduating 12th grade) begin in June.
     Readathon takes place beginning June 21—come into the library for details on how to win prizes as you read your way through the summer.
    On June 21 Video Game Tournament 1 begins. Join us from, 2 to 4 p.m. to compete in a fast-paced, multi-player game on the Wii.

Movie Night

    On Thurs., June 28 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., teens and tweens meet at the library for Teen Movie Night. 
    First movie of the summer is “The Dark Knight” shown on Blu-Ray. Refreshments will be served free.
    No registration required; just come on in and bring your friends.

Teens invited to discuss life strategies, conflict resolution

'Eco Art' also part of reading club activities 

    DERBY - The Derby Public Library invites young adults ages 12 to 17 to a Teen Reality Roundtable, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. June 13.
     Participants will exchange ideas and interests with peers on successful strategies for navigating day-to-day life as a teenager.
    Guided discussion topics will explore: life strategies for successful teens; urban improve/violence and conflict resolution; coping with the body image blues;  plus other important contemporary issues.
    This program is part of the Library's 2012 “Balance Your Life” Summer Reading Club.
    The Library also invites young adults ages 12 to 17 to a Teen Zone Mural Conjure, June 19 and 20, and June 26, from 4-5 p.m. all three days.
    “Eco Art” advocate and artist Kelly King redefines material function as you employ important steps of artistic process.
    Participants meet as a team to: brainstorm a concept; “incubate & illuminate” the design; and implement collective creative energy to produce a mural for the Teen Zone. This program is also part of the 2012 “Balance Your Life” Summer Reading Club.
