Seymour Lions Club Offering Scholarships

SEYMOUR- The Seymour Lions Club is accepting scholarship applications for 2018.   This scholarship is open to all high school seniors that are residents of Seymour planning to attend any college or course of study. Four, $500.00 scholarships are awarded each year.

You can fill out your application on-line, at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/seymourct. After filling out the application under the scholarship tab, simply print it out along with the application cover sheet also found online. You can then mail your essay, application and cover sheet to:

All applications must be post marked by April 1st of the current year. The check will be made payable directly to the college/course of study upon verification of students acceptance into the college/course of study.

Hunter Cripps, son of John and Laura Cripps, of Seymour, was recently awarded a scholarship from The Kennedy Center, based in Norwalk. A total of 17 junior golfers from 12 communities received scholarships at The Kennedy Center's 25th Annual Charity Golf Classic. Selection is based upon academic achievement, school and community leadership and golf proficiency. Church in Seymour offers scholarship

SEYMOUR - The Great Hill United Methodist Church Board of Trustees has announced that applications are now available for the McKane Scholarship for 2014. 

The scholarship has been given annually since 1968 and is in memory of Peter Hall McKane who died tragically at the age of 18 in an automobile accident and his brother, Paul Archer McKane, who died in 2003 from cancer.

The scholarship fund was endowed by the McKane family, friends and church members.
This year a scholarship award of $1,000 will be given to a graduating high school student from Seymour or Oxford, who has been accepted and plans to attend a college, university or other institute of higher learning. Selection criteria includes financial need, personal effort, individual goals reflecting a degree of determination, and academic achievement. 

For additional information and or application, contact local high school guidance offices or call  Great Hill United Methodist Church, 203-888-9425.

Deadline for applications is May 12, 2014.

Derby Library accepting essays for scholarship

DERBY - The Derby Public Library is accepting submissions for its Annual

Scholarship Prize of $500.  
It is open to all high school seniors living in Derby who are planning to further their education, regardless of where they go to school. 
The Library Board of Directors will choose the winner based on an essay explaining the role of libraries in his or her life. 

The award will be presented at the June 18 Library Board of Directors

meeting.  In addition to the monetary prize, the winner’s name will be added

to the Scholarship Prize Plaque located in the Young Adult Department.  

High school seniors may submit their entry directly to the Library Director now through May 31.

Local lawmakers congratulate Seymour student

HARTFORD - State Senators Kevin Kelly, R-Stratford, and Rob Kane, R-Watertown, recognize and congratulate Rachel E. Mayers, a student from Seymour, on receiving a Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET) Advance Scholarship.
 
Mayers was awarded a $2,500 grant for her college education during an award ceremony Wednesday at the State Capitol.

“Paying for school is a challenge faced by many young people who dream about pursuing a college education,” said Kelly. 
“I hope that this scholarship will help make college more affordable for our local Seymour student, so that she may achieve her goal of a college degree.”

“We commend Rachel on being awarded this scholarship and wish her and all Seymour high school seniors the very best in the future,” Kane said.  
“The cost of higher education is not getting any cheaper, and these funds will allow Rachel and the other scholarship winners to spend less time worrying about how to pay for college and more time focused on getting into college and staying in college.”

Mayers was one of 200 high school seniors selected to receive a CHET Advance Scholarship. Winners were randomly selected from a pool of 3,635 applicants that hail from 85 public high schools, 10 parochial high schools and three independent high schools in Connecticut. Two of the winners are home-schooled students. 
Almost half of the towns in Connecticut have at least one winner, and all eight counties are represented among the winners.

CHET Advance Scholarship is administered under the banner of the Connecticut Higher Education Trust, Connecticut’s 529 college savings plan. No state funds will be used for awards issued under CHET Advance Scholarship. 
Instead, TIAA-CREF Tuition Financing, Inc. and The Hartford, plan managers for CHET Direct-Sold and CHET Advisor-Sold, respectively, contribute annually into a scholarship account to finance the program.

Seymour High student wins scholarship, recognition

State Sen. Rob Kane, R-Watertown, congratulates Seymour High School senior Aubrey Tan, right, who was among several Connecticut students to be presented with a scholarship by the Connecticut Water Works Association and the Connecticut Section of the American Water Works Association at an event Tuesday at the state Capitol complex to celebrate National Drinking Water Week.

 

The event, attended by state water, health and environmental professionals, awarded the scholarships to help ensure that, in the words of President John F. Kennedy, "the torch is passed to a new generation."

At a May 1 event at the State Capitol, state Sen. Rob Kane, R-Watertown, honored Seymour High School student Stephanie Orts, who has been named one of 44 Connecticut Leaders and Achievers recipients by the Comcast Foundation.

Orts received a $1,000 scholarship from Comcast in recognition of her leadership skills, academic achievement and commitment to community service.

“We are very proud of what Stephanie has accomplished through a lot of hard work and the desire to make a positive difference in her community,” Kane said.  “This award recognizes Stephanie for being among the brightest young minds in our state. She deserves it, and her success is a reflection of the excellent support and guidance she has received along the way from her teachers, friends and family.  Stephanie is a role model, and we wish her the best of luck in the future.”

Kane thanked the Comcast Foundation for its continued charitable support of local communities and for helping to empower young students like Orts.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship Program aims to give young people every opportunity to be prepared for the future, to engage youth in their communities, and to demonstrate the importance of civic involvement. Since the program's inception there have been more than 17,000 scholarship winners totaling more than $17.2 million.
