Renovations Cause Location Change for Shelton High School Graduation

Regarding SHS 2018 Graduation:

We know this is a big change. We understand there is some disappointment, but we are committed to having a well-run, memorable high school graduation ceremony for our hardworking students.  

However, due to extensive renovations at Finn Stadium, scheduled to begin in May, our graduation ceremony will be held at Nolan Field in Ansonia.

The date will be announced, as always, at the April BOE meeting.

Nothing is ideal about the situation, but this is a better option than doing it indoors.
 
The plan is to have the refurbished field ready for September. We ask for your understanding and flexibility. Together we can make this a positive ceremony for the students. That is our goal!

Flag Day Ceremony Today (June 14) in Seymour

SEYMOUR – The public is invited to retire their old, tattered or torn flags during a Flag Day ceremony scheduled today at 6 p.m. Wednesday (JUNE 14) a Bob’s Auto Sales, New Haven Road, (Route 67) across from the Seybridge Plaza.

VFW Post 12084 will host the ceremony and will show the public the proper way to dispose of their old flags via burning them.

Seymour Honors its Men & Women in Blue

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Police Department held its annual awards ceremony March 28 at Villa Bianca, where officers and citizens were honored for their bravery and heroism in going above and beyond the call of the duty. Griffin Hospital to Honor Veterans

 

DERBY -Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., Derby, invites the community to a ceremony honoring US veterans at 8 a.m. on Wed., Nov. 9 at the flagpole in front of the hospital.

 

The program will include a presentation of the colors by Emil Senger American Legion Post 10, reading of veterans’ names in the Griffin Hospital family, prayers and singing. All are welcome.

Ansonia to hold Irish flag-raising ceremony Saturday

ANSONIA - The city's Cultural Commission is sponsoring an "Irish Flag Raising" ceremony at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in front of City Hall, 253 Main St.

That portion of the street will be closed for the ceremony and entertainment immediately following.

The Rev. Jeff Gubbiotti, pastor, Church of the Assumption will offer the invocation and students from the Assumption School will be on hand to recite the "Pledge of Allegiance" and sing The National Anthem and an Irish tune.

Mayor David S. Cassetti and James Hubbard of Ansonia will do the honor of raising the Irish flag. Cassetti also will read a proclamation honoring the Irish ancestry and heritage.

Phyllis Kaplan, a local DJ, will play Irish tunes as people arrive for the festivities. She said she'd love to have everyone join in for an Irish sing-a-long prior to the ceremony and again at the conclusion.

The Doyle Senior Center chorus, under the direction of Josephine Blackwell, will entertain with several tunes and students of the Mulkerin School of Irish Dancing in West Haven will perform traditional dances, including an Irish jig, in the blocked off street 

Also performing will be a barbershop quartet from the Coastal Chordsmen of Trumbull.  "Take Four" will sing a rendition of "Wild Irish Rose,""McNamara's Band," and "The Irish Parting Blessing." Victor Lembo, a member of Holy Rosary Church, sings tenor with the quartet.

The Cultural Commission invites the public to attend and join in the festivities. There will be a surprise after the ceremony and entertainment.

Flag Day celebrated in Derby Sunday

For years, Elk Lodges across the country have sponsored the annual Flag Day event.
Moscato’s son, Elliott, a Boy Scout, was one of the Flag Bearers. Exalted Ruler from Lodge #571 Jerome Coolidge was Master of Ceremonies and Esteemed Leading Knight Yvonne Bonina gave a history of the flag.  

Derby Mayor Anthony Staffieri and Ansonia Mayor James Della Volpe addressed the crowd.
Honor guards from Shelton’s American Legion Post and Derby’s Police Department were also on hand. 

Attendees were also invited back to Derby’s Lodge #571 for hot dogs and soda.

Derby dedicates park to lifelong resident

DERBY - This morning I covered a ceremony at Storm Engine Company firehouse to dedicate a recreational park on O'Sullivan's Island in memory of the one and only Eddie Cotter.
The ceremony was forced inside because of rain.

I'm sure the message on the cake at the reception sums up the thoughts of many of the family and friends who were in attendance.

Below is a photo of the monument that was projected on the wall of the firehouse during the ceremony.

Hall of Fame announces inductees for 2013

NEW HAVEN - Marking the major milestone of celebrating 20 years of telling women’s stories, the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame announces four inductees for 2013. 

Embodying women’s education and women’s empowerment, they are:   
Rosa DeLauro, U.S. Representative of Connecticut’s 3^rd district since 1990, sharp political strategist and champion of women’s causes;
The Honorable Barbara Hackman Franklin, President and CEO of Barbara Franklin Enterprises, 29^th U.S. Secretary of Commerce, led the first White House effort to recruit women for high-level government jobs;  
Linda Koch Lorimer, Vice President of Yale University, visionary leader in higher education, spearheading strategic partnerships locally and abroad;
and historic inductee Augusta Lewis Troup, union organizer, journalist and promoter of the suffrage movement, beloved educator and advocate for teachers and minority groups.

“Historically, traditional education has been the path to empowerment for women,” says Katherine Wiltshire, executive director of the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame.
“However, today we recognize that education extends well beyond the academic walls into numerous fields where women use creative and innovative ways to help other women advance.  There’s no better way to celebrate the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame’s 20^th anniversary than to honor and share the stories of four remarkable women who so beautifully embody our mission to educate and inspire women and girls.  They give us hope and a positive vision for future generations.”

The CWHF welcomes back platinum sponsor The Hartford to help make possible the 20^th Annual Induction Ceremony & Celebration which will take place Nov. 6 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.
In addition, the CWHF will recognize a group of 10 Connecticut women whose life’s work has fostered women’s knowledge and advancement.

Ansonia tree lighting slated Nov. 30

Santa to arrive by firetruck

ANSONIA - The Cultural Commission and the city of Ansonia are sponsoring a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 at Veterans Park next to City Hall on Main Street.

DJ Phyllis Kaplan and the Ansonia High School chorus along with other singers will provide the crowd with Christmas carols throughout the tree lighting, which is sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit.

A parade will form on Upper Main Street at 5:30 p.m. and will proceed to Veterans Park.

Santa Claus will arrive in style on a city firetruck and will be escorted to a nearby stage and will be available for pictures.

Dunkin' Donuts of Ansonia will provide attendees with hot chocolate and doughnuts.
