Charity Golf Tournament to Benefit Veterans

SEYMOUR - Seymour VFW Post 12084 will host its 3rd annual charity golf tournament on May 18 at the Oxford Greens Golf Course, in Oxford.

 

A continental breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., followed by an 8:30 a.m. tee-off time. A steak and chicken dinner will be served following the tournament. Cost is $125 per person, with proceeds to benefit veterans' causes.

Shelton Mayor Lauretti Donates to The Kennedy Center

SHELTON- Mayor Mark A. Lauretti recently surprised the Kennedy Center with a big donation over the holiday season with proceeds from his annual charity golf tournament.

 

“We want to personally thank Mayor Lauretti and the supporters of his golf tournament for their generous donation to The Kennedy Center,” said Martin D. Schwartz, President and CEO of The Kennedy Center.  “This substantial contribution has been earmarked for general operating expenses, which will benefit the 2,000 people with disabilities we serve throughout the region.”

 

Mayor Lauretti added, “I have been involved with The Kennedy Center for several decades.  This major rehabilitation agency provides people with disabilities many employment and community resources throughout the region, including in Shelton. In fact, several years ago, I hired an outstanding Kennedy Center worker in my office at City Hall.  I am honored to provide this worthwhile organization with a $5,000 donation from the Mayor’s Golf Tournament, so they can continue helping others.”

 

The Kennedy Center, founded in 1951, is an internationally accredited, non-profit, community-based rehabilitation organization that currently serves over 2,000 individuals annually. The agency actively responds to the needs of the community by offering innovative, comprehensive service options to persons with disabilities and special needs, from birth to senior years.

 

The Kennedy Center operates 31 community experience programs, 16 group homes, an industries program composed of six businesses, supported and competitive employment and job placement services, a family support and respite service, travel training, and a variety of children’s programs.

Seymour VFW Needs a New Home

 

SEYMOUR – VFW Post 12084 will host a pair of events this and next month, with proceeds to help the remaining Post members find a new home.

Post Commander Al Yagovane said a Pasta Dinner will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 16 at Colonial Tavern in Oxford. The menu includes all-you-can-eat ziti, meatballs, sausage, salad, dessert, coffee, juice and soft drinks.

Music will be provided by DJ Tony Castle.

The cost is $17 for adults, $10 for those ages 12-18 and free for under 12. Tickets are available at JR Custom Car & Truck, 40 New Haven Rd. (Route 67), or by contacting Yagovane at: (203)736-7981 or (203)888-4465.

Then, on Oct. 7, the Post will host a golf tournament at the Oxford Greens Golf Club, located at 99 Country Club Dr., Oxford.

The cost is $125 per player or $500 for a team, and includes unlimited range balls, greens fees, breakfast, lunch, beverages and beer. Deadline to register for the four-player scramble tournament is Sept. 16.  

Breakfast will be held at 9 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. tee-off time.

Yagovane said proceeds from both events will go toward helping the Post find a new home.  

Yagovane, said the Post’s 60 members were displaced from their former home at 30 Great Hill Rd. in September 2015. Yagovane said the property owner’s daughter needed the land the Post facility had been using for the past four years to start a business.

Fortunately for the Post, Retina Sytems on Day Street has opened the use of its cafeteria to the members for meeting space for as long as they need it. Yagovane said he couldn’t be more thankful to company owner Floyd Moir for his kindness and generosity, but said the Post really would love nothing more than to find a permanent headquarters.

“All we really need is a small, flat piece of land where we could put up a small building, or find a place that has a small building,” said Yagovane, a U.S. Army veteran. “We’d like to have  capacity to house at least 150 people.”

Yagovane said the Post is also looking to draw new members by starting an auxiliary for both men and women, who are fathers, mothers and children of past and current military members. Those interested are encouraged to contact Yagovane.

Yagovane said the Post is all about ‘giving back to the community,’ as well, and having a home base is critical for members to continue doing just that. The Post has done plenty, including teaming up with the local schools to sponsor a Memorial Day poster contest, hosting job fairs, organizing the annual Memorial Day parade, hosting annual Veterans Day candlelight vigils and sponsoring local youth sports teams.

PCRC to host 15th annual golf tourney in Monroe

Who:             Golfers of all ages are invited to participate in the 15th Annual PCRC “Fore! The Children” Golf Tournament. This event is open to the public.

SHELTON - The Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley’s Alumni Association will be hosting its annual golf tournament May 23 at Woodbridge Country Club in Woodbridge. Back by popular demand, the tournament will include a Golf Ball Drop raffle.

Over the years our golf tournament has been able to purchase a portable street hockey rink, air hockey table, and foosball table for our games room; purchase 12 computer lab stations; sponsor the music program for children to learn how to play guitar, keyboard, and drums; sponsor the chess club, sponsor the Club members’ Award Dinner; and purchase ping pong tables, an indoor batting cage, outdoor basketball hoops, and a moon bounce.

ORANGE - The 3rd Annual Saints Open Golf Tournament to benefit St. Mary-St. Michael School in Derby will be held Oct. 7 at Race Brook Country Club.

 
Co-chairs are Nick DeFelice and Al Altieri, two graduates of the school.

Club plans 42nd annual golf classic in Shelton

SHELTON - The Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley will hold its annual John “Red” Larsen Golf Classic Sept. 24 at Brownson Country Club.
The tournament will begin at 11 a.m. with registration and lunch, followed by a shotgun start at noon. Cocktails begin at 5 p.m. with an awards reception and dinner at 6 p.m. 
Entry fee is $200 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, and dinner. Field is limited to first 32 foursomes. 
The tournament will be played rain or shine, but may be cancelled in extreme weather conditions. Entries with fewer than four players will be paired by the tournament committee.

Prizes will be awarded for Four Person Scramble, and the top six teams (gross and net) for longest drive, closest to the pin, and closest to the line.

About the Classic
The Boys & Girls Club Golf Classic, which has run 42 consecutive years since 1972, is dedicated to John “Red” Larsen. Red participated in almost every tournament and was Chairman for more than half. 
It was common to see Red stuffing “Tee-Favor Bags” on Sunday night or putting out sponsor signs in the morning mist. His love for children and his dedication to this Boys & Girls Club were rivaled only by his love for his family and the game of golf.

Seymour slates 4th annual Pink Golf Tournament

SEYMOUR — Think you can hit a hole-in-one?

That’s all it takes to drive home a brand new Hyundai if you hit the links next month by supporting Seymour Pink’s ongoing breast cancer awareness campaign.

The 4th annual Seymour Pink Golf Tournament will be held June 8 at the Woodhaven Country Club in Bethany.
Proceeds will benefit Seymour Pink, the community’s grass roots effort to fight breast cancer.

Mary Ellen LoGuidice, the tournament director and Seymour Pink board member, said the event is the group’s “major fundraiser” bringing in about $10,000 per tournament.
“Our golfers get to spend some quality time outdoors doing something fun, as well as support the mission of Seymour Pink,” LoGuidice said.

The tournament will feature two tee times, 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Early registration is encouraged.

The most exciting contest is the Hole-In-One, where Key Hyundai of Milford will provide a free car to the first golfer lucky enough to get an ace.

Entry fee is $75, and provides participants with a cart, green fee, breakfast, lunch, beverages, prizes and a golf gift.

“Golfers return year after year, for a fun-filled day, in support of our cause,” LoGuidice added. “We have great raffle prizes, as well, thanks to such great community support and sponsors.”

ORANGE - The 2012 Saints Open Golf Tournament to benefit St. Mary–St. Michael School in Derby will be held Oct. 1 at Race Brook Country Club.

Registration for a single golfer is $225 and includes 18 holes of golf, a BBQ lunch, a one-hour open bar, as well as a raw bar and a carving station dinner.

Shelton business group organizes charitable donation golf tourney

     SHELTON - Members of the Shelton Alliance BNI (Business Networking International) have organized this Charitable Donation Golf Tournament June 25 at Brownson Country Club, 15 Soundview Ave.

  The Recreation Camp is a non-profit member of the Valley United Way and has continuously operated a children’s summer camp on the Housatonic River in Derby since 1917.  The camp’s mission is to provide early childhood education and water-related activities to children from Derby, Shelton, Ansonia, Seymour, and Oxford during the summer.  Swimming, kayaking, canoeing and sailing are taught by Red Cross certified instructors.

            “Following along the BNI philosophy that ‘Giver’s Gain,’ each chapter reaches out in their local communities to support philanthropic causes geared to improving our quality of life,” said Cara Mocarski, President of the Shelton chapter. “In addition to helping a local charity, we want to increase awareness in the community about our dynamic business referral group.”

            “We are extremely grateful to the Shelton Alliance BNI Group for contributing tournament proceeds to the Recreation Camp in Derby,” said Camp Director Mike Drew. “Thousands of Valley boys and girls ages 5 to 15 have learned how to swim at our camp, which is situated on two acres along the Housatonic River.  The group’s generosity and support will benefit many Valley children this summer.”

            The tournament opens with registration and lunch at 11 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. and a scramble format. The cocktail hour will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. A cash bar is available.

      The individual player fee of $165 includes lunch, an afternoon scramble, a social hour and numerous golf prizes.
