Seymour Student Collects Coats for Those in Need

SEYMOUR- In December, Jerren Farrison, a Chatfield-LoPresti School 4th grade student, held a coat drive to benefit St. Vincent De Paul in Derby, CT. Jerren was able to collect 107 coats. Thank you Jerren for this very fine effort and thank you to the community in supporting this wonderful cause.

Stuff-A-Cruiser on Sunday, Nov. 20

DERBY - The Derby Police Department Auxiliary will hold a holiday food drive to benefit the St. Vincent De Paul Society from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday at Shop Rite, 49 Pershing Drive.

At the Stuff-A-Cruiser event, officers will accept non-perishable food donations to feed needy Derby families.

“All food items collected will go to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a Derby-based food bank and thrift shop dedicated to feeding our local veterans and the homeless by providing meals and clothing to those that have sacrificed for our country and those less fortunate - especially during the holiday season,” said Lt. Chris Pizzi of the Auxiliary Unit.


The Derby Police Auxiliary is an all-volunteer group of non-sworn police officers that work closely with the sworn officers of the Derby Police Department for everything from routine patrol and traffic assignments to organizing events that benefit the Derby community.
 

An estimated 22 percent of Derby residents are food-insecure, according to calculations of food insecurity data compiled by the nonprofit food bank, FeedingAmerica.org. 
 

“Our organization and group of caring volunteers are dedicated to providing our veterans, the homeless, and those less fortunate families in Derby with food and clothing - some of the very basics that many of us take for granted -especially during the holiday season,” said Remy Kocurek, Director, St. Vincent de Paul Society. "Donations have dropped off in recent years and we are especially grateful to the Derby Police Auxiliary for volunteering their time to support such important causes." 

During the food drive, officers will stuff police cruisers with non-perishable food items only and a list of some of the recommended items to donate will be provided to Shop Rite customers at the food drive and many of those items will be on sale during the event.

While only non-perishable items will be collected at the event, anyone wishing to make money donations may do so by mailing a check to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 237 Roosevelt Drive, Derby, 06418.

“Valley residents have a tradition of supporting our veterans and those less fortunate and I know they will continue to come through for us at the Stuff-A-Cruiser event on November 20," Pizzi said.

Macaroni & Meatballs to Beneft Boy Scout Troop 3 Derby

DERBY - A home-style macaroni & meatball dinner benefiting Boy Scout Troop 3 Derby will be served 5:30PM on Saturday, November 12 at St. Mary Church Hall, 212 Elizabeth St, Derby.

The menu, prepared by Marc Garofalo, members of St. Mary Church and Troop 3, includes  macaroni,  meatball,  sausage,  sauce,  bread,  salad,  soda,  coffee and dessert.  $10/adults  and   $8/age 16 & under. Advance reservation required by Nov. 9. Please call 203-929-6616.    Proceeds to benefit scouts attending Housatonic Council’s Edmund D. Strang Scout Reservation summer camp.

Guests are encouraged to bring two canned goods that will be collected and donated to St. Vincent de Paul’s food bank as part of the BSA’s Scouting for Food campaign.

 

Local Knights of Columbus Help Feed Needy

Local Food Bank Collecting Easter Hams

DERBY- St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank is collecting Easter hams now until March 19.

 

Pre-cooked hams are needed to help feed friends and neighbors. Hams can be dropped off between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, March 19, at St. Vincent DePaul Helping Hands of the Valley, located at 237 Roosevelt Dr., Derby or the Office of the Town/City Clerk at Derby City Hall between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Derby City Hall Collecting for Food Bank

DERBY - Derby City Hall is collecting canned food during the month of March for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank.

 

This month, donations of canned beef stew are being collected (Dinty Moore or any other brand). According to Town/City Clerk Marc Garofalo, donations can be dropped off at City Hall or the food bank itself, located at 237 Roosevelt Dr. 

 

During the month of February, City Hall collected 44 jars of mayonnaise and another 10 jars of jelly for the food bank.

 

City Hall, in lieu of a Holiday Secret Santa Gift, donated food to the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry in December. After discussions with the operators of the Food Bank, Garofalo said city officials  asked them for monthly suggestions for food collections to concentrate on what is in short supply.  Garofalo said City Hall employees decided to start a monthly collection of one specific item to help the food bank feed those in need in Derby and the Valley.  In January, City Hall collected jars of jelly and in February, jars of mayonnaise were collected.

 

Food bank officials said a great deal of canned beef stew is used, especially during the colder months.

 

"Please consider donating some cans of beef stew and bringing them to the Town / City Clerk’s Office by the end of March and we will deliver them." said Garofalo.
