Girl Scouts Doing Good Things

DERBY – Girl Scout Troops 38392 and 38325, of Milford, helped make visits to the Griffin Hospital Emergency Department a little more comforting with a donation of books, magazines and toys.

Griffin recently started collecting items and activities, such as paperback books, crossword puzzles, toys and playing cards, to help patients, especially children, feel more comfortable during their stay in the Emergency Department.

Maggie Cole, a patient safety monitor at Griffin and leader for Girl Scout Troops 38392 and 38325, heard about the need and organized collections that included area troops as well.

The Scouts delivered several bags of children’s books, magazines and toys to the Emergency Department recently.

“We are very grateful to Maggie and all the scouts for this donation,” said ER Nurse Susan Rupar. “We plan to have a cart with books and items to help patients pass the time as they wait for test results or for treatment.”

Derby Mayor Thanks Fireworks Donors

DERBY - Mayor Richard Dziekan would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the businesses who donated to this year’s Independence Day Fireworks.

Because of overwhelming generosity, Wednesday (July 3) night’s fireworks were fully funded through contributions by local businesses and corporate partners.

Every year, Derby shares the cost of the fireworks with Shelton, and this year each municipality was responsible for $13,600 plus our own fire watch.

The Mayor’s office sent out letters in April seeking donations and we are thrilled to announce that for the second year in a row there was no expense to the taxpayer.

All additional money raised above this year’s costs will be set aside for next year.

SHELTON - Dr. Bruce Sofferman of Smile Dental Center, along with his family and a turkey mascot held their 32nd annual Thanksgiving food drive Wednesday, Nov. 14 to benefit the Spooner House and its Food Bank. Donations of frozen turkeys and non-perishable food items can be dropped off at Smile Dental Center, 1000 Bridgeport Ave., anytime through the holidays, for a chance to win several prizes.

Valley Students Head Back to Class in Style

ANSONIA  >> More than 250 Ansonia students went back to school in style this year, thanks to donations from several Valley businesses.

Valley United Way’s Corporate Volunteer Council recently presented 253 students from Mead and Prendergast schools with bins piled high with new clothes and school supplies, as part of the 23^rd annual Back to School Clothes for Kids project thttps://valleyunitedway.org/events/back-school-clothes-kids.

According to Patricia Tarasovic, VUW’s Vice President of Community Engagement and CVC Director, this year’s back to school project represented the highest number of students adopted by local businesses in a school district.

The CVC is a coalition of more than 50 Valley businesses and corporations, both large and small, who give back to the communities where they live and work, according to Tarasovic.

Local Lawmakers Help Families in Need

SEYMOUR- Local lawmakers recently helped ring the bell for the Salvation Army to make the holidays a lot brighter for Valley families in need.

 

The money raised during the hour period will be donated to programs that will help local families in need. Additionally, Walmart has guaranteed that they will match the donations to the Salvation Army collected by lawmakers throughout the state up to $25,000. 

 

Annually, the Salvation Army assists approximately 25 million Americans helping provide food, shelter, disaster relief, rehabilitation centers, anti-human trafficking efforts, and many other programs. The Red Kettle Campaign was started in 1891, and has become a well-recognized tradition that has raised millions of dollars to help those in need.

Donations Sought for Valley Thrift Store

ANSONIA - My Sister’s Place Thrift Store & Donation Center has supported victims of domestic violence for more than 30 years. 

All store proceeds benefit BHcare’s Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services.

The store prides itself on offering quality items for resale to the community. 

More than 25 volunteers work tirelessly, seven days a week, sorting through box after box of donations. 
Sometimes they find items that cannot be used. Any item that has mold or mildew, has been contaminated by rodents, has an unpleasant odor and/or is badly damaged is disposed of and will not be sold in the store.
 

The generosity of donors is appreciated and staff and volunteers try their best to get every dollar possible out of the items donated. 
Ripped and stained clothing pieces are sold as rags and wires are stripped from broken electronics for resale/recycle. 
 

“At a time of uncertainties with the state budget, we are truly grateful for the support we receive from My Sister’s Place,” said Esperina Stubblefield, Director of The Umbrella. “This source of revenue allows us to continue to help thousands of victims of domestic violence."

 

UCDVS provides free and confidential services to more than 6,000 victims of domestic violence and their children. 

Services such as emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis hotlines, walk-in crisis centers, counseling, advocacy, and other supports are provided to those fleeing from domestic abuse.
