Seymour Lions Offer Scholarships

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Lions Club is accepting scholarship applications for 2020.   This scholarship is open to all high school seniors that are residents of Seymour planning to attend any college or course of study. Four, $500 scholarships are awarded each year.

You can fill out your application on-line, at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/seymourct.

After filling out the application under the scholarship tab, simply print it out along with the application cover sheet, also found online.

Seymour Lions seek donations of glasses, hearing aids

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Lions are asking people to look through dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses and old hearing aids and donate them to the Lions Recycle For Sight & Hearing program.

The Seymour Lions Club will be collecting used prescription eyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program. 
The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible. Used hearing aids are also being collected.
“We need everyone to donate their used eyeglasses,” said Ann Barton, project chairperson. 
“In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as one month's wages and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.”
The donated glasses will be shipped to a regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center where they will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups.
To donate used glasses and hearing aides(including sunglasses and reading glasses), place them in the specially marked Lions Recycle for Sight collection boxes located at:
                                    Smith's Ansonia Shell, Rt. 8 and Great Hill Road., Ansonia
                                    Seybridge Pharmacy, 37 New Haven Road, Seymour
                                    George Tzepos, OD, 25 New Haven Road, Seymour
                                    Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia
Club members will be at Stop & Shop in Seymour from 3:30-8:30 p.m. May 9 collecting used glasses and hearing aids for Lions World Sight Day. 
The Seymour Lions Club has 31 members and meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Molto Bene Restaurant in Ansonia. Lions clubs are groups of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.

Seymour Lions recognize members


The Seymour Lions Club held an Appreciation/Membership Dinner Jan. 10 at the Seymour Land Trust building. 
The event was held to thank all of the volunteers who help during the year and to present awards to members.

Seymour Lions Club to host blood drive

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Lions Club will be hosting a blood drive from 1-5:45 p.m. Monday at the Seymour Land Trust, 13 Chatfield St.

Residents are asked to come and give a true gift of the season and donate for a much-needed cause.

Seymour Lions ready to roll with annual car show

    SEYMOUR - The Seymour Lions Club will hold its 44th annual benefit car show starting at 8 a.m. Oct. 20 at M.P.I. Corp., Silvermine Industrial Park, 4 Progress Ave.
    Rain date is Oct. 27.
 
    The judged show will feature antique custom, stock, hot rod, muscle street rod, and classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

    Registration will be from 8-11 a.m., general admission from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. and awards will be given out at 2 p.m.
    Registration is $10; general admission is $5, children under 12 free; $3 for senior citizens 65 and older.
    The top 75 judged cars will receive trophies. Winners must be present to win trophy.
    A visible fire extinguisher is required in all vehicles.

    The band Crash 21 will play from noon to 3 p.m.

Seymour Lions Club installs officers

ANSONIA - An installation ceremony was held recently at Molto Bene Italian Restaurant for incoming officers of the Seymour Lions Club.
Yvonne Lorincz was elected club president for 2013-14.  Lorincz has been an active member of the Seymour Lions Club for the past four years.

Melissa A. Smith Poynton was elected to serve as the club secretary and the seconnd VP.  The club’s first vice-president will be Rose Marie Sheehy who will also be the club’s treasurer. Annette Dlugokenski will serve as Tail Twister and Rosaria Forto will be  Lion Tamer.

Lorincz said, “I am looking forward to leading various projects and continuing the Seymour Lions Club’s commitment to serving the community.”

Since the club’s chartering in 1952, its members have worked on a variety of projects in the local community, such as Senior Health Fair, Eye Screenings, Sight Saver Days, Senior Pizza & Bingo, Scholarships, Recycle For Sight, Christmas Parade Float, Trick or Treat in Downtown Seymour, Summer Cruise Nights and an Annual Benefit Car Show. 
Monies raised are distributed to various charities including but not limited to American Red Cross, Fidelco Dogs, Low Vision Center, CRIS Radio, Diabetes Awareness, Camp Hemlock and LCIF.

The Seymour Lions Club has 37 members and meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Molto Bene Italian Restaurant. 
Lions clubs are made up of men and women who identify needs within the community and work together to fulfill those needs.

Seymour club collecting used eyeglasses

Lions Recycle For Sight program

SEYMOUR - As spring cleaning gets under way, the Seymour Lions are asking people to look through dresser drawers and closets for used eyeglasses and donate them to the Lions Recycle For Sight program.

Book swap slated in Seymour May 19

SEYMOUR - The  Seymour Lions Club and the Seymour Culture and Arts Commission will sponsor a Meet and Greet Book Swap from 1-3 p.m. May 19 at the Strand Theater, 165 Main St.

Bring any books you no longer want and replace them from the selection of books received. Encyclopedias will not be accepted.
 
The event will feature author Anthony Paolucci who will read from his book, "Greedy Guts."
He will be selling and signing his books as well.

Come out and meet the people from the community.
Leftover books will be donated to various organizations.

Seymour Lions promote green initiative, mark Earth Day

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Lions Club recently took part in a Lions Green Team initiative to help the environment by celebrating Earth Day at its Adopt-A-Spot located at the bottom of Exit 22 off Route 8 North.
The club’s efforts resulted in a welcoming entrance into Seymour.

According to Yvonne Lorincz, Seymour Lions Club president, “This Lions Green Team project improved the environment and our community at the same time. It exemplifies our ongoing commitment to provide a healthier and safer place to live, work and play.
"Lions thank everyone who contributed to and supported this important effort. You are truly helping Lions make a difference.”

The Seymour Lions Club meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Molto Bene Italian American Kitchen, 557 Wakelee Ave., Ansonia.
In addition to environmental projects, the club also is having a Meet & Greet Book Swap on May 19 and is starting its Summer Cruise Season May 5.

Sock hop benefit on tap in Ansonia
