Ansonia man pleads guilty to lying to FBI about police brutality claim

HARTFORD >> An Ansonia man who accused Derby police officers of beating him during his arrest for a probation violation admitted Tuesday he was lying.
Edward Minerly, 52, of Ansonia, who is a registered sex offender, waived his right to indictment and pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Hartford to one count of making a false report of police brutality to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Minerly faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 when Senior U.S. District Judge Alfred V. Covello sentences him on Feb. 10.

Dugatto administers oath to Derby detective

DERBY - Mayor Anita Dugatto recently swore in Police Officer Edward Sullivan to the rank of Detective. Sullivan fills an opening in the Detective Bureau due to a recent retirement.

Sullivan was raised in Shelton and graduated from Shelton High School in 1987, and attended Sacred Heart University. Sullivan was employed at DHL as a driver for 14 years prior to joining the Derby Police Department in 2007.

As a patrolman, Sullivan served as the Department Training Officer, Field Training Officer and a member of the Honor Guard.
In addition, Sullivan assisted the day shift sergeant with Local Traffic Authority, Animal Control issues and was a certified bike patrol officer.

Sullivan is a lifelong resident of Shelton. He and his wife, Elicia, have two boys, Jake and Luke.

Derby police identify victims of Thursday’s shooting



DERBY >> The victims of Thursday’s shooting have been identified as John Benitez, 21, of Ansonia, and Quincy Sanders, 30, of Derby, according to police spokesman Salvatore F. Frosceno.

Sanders was treated and released from Yale-New Haven Hospital for a gunshot wound to the abdomen, Frosceno said.
Benitez remains hospitalized in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest, Frosceno said.
It is unknown whether both were the intended victims of the shooting.
The incident is still under investigation, and police are following up on leads.
Two or three potential suspects have been identified, and police are awaiting forensic evidence results, as well as interviewing witnesses.

Derby PD hires 5 patrol officers

DERBY - The Derby Police Department has hired five patrol officers.

Taylor Norton, Frank DeAngelo IV, John O’Donoghue, Frank Sicsico, and Eric Grella were sworn in Monday at a Police Commissioner meeting, according to a release today from Lt. Justin Stanko.

Norton, 23, lives in Bristol. He holds an undergraduate Criminology degree from Central Connecticut State University and was a former all-state high school soccer player at Bristol Eastern High School. He is a certified EMT and a licensed commercial pilot.

DeAngelo, 28, is a Shelton resident. A former teacher, he obtained his B.A. in criminal justice from Quinnipiac University and is working towards his master’s degree in English.

Seymour resident O’Donoghue, 21, recently obtained a B.A. in Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven. He currently is a member of the Derby Auxiliary Police Department.

Sicsico, 30, of Trumbull, has an associate’s degree in Criminal Justice. He is also a Reservist with the United States Marine Corps where he specializes in crash-fire rescue.

Thomaston resident Grella, 28, is also a former teacher. Grella earned his B.A. in Psychology from Central Connecticut State University and his Masters degree in Elementary Education from the University of Bridgeport.

The recruits will commence official training Jan. 4 at the Connecticut Police Academy in Meriden.
The academy training is approximately 24 weeks after which the recruits must pass an additional 12 weeks of field training at the Derby Police Department before they become certified officers.
