Festival of Trees Nov. 17 & 18 in Shelton

SHELTON - TEAM Inc's 15th annual Festival of Trees will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Nov. 17 and Sunday Nov. 18 at the Shelton Senior Center, 81 Wheeler St.

 

The event will features raffles of decorated trees, wreaths and baskets, along with craft vendors, pictures with Santa and kids' holiday crafts.

DERBY - The Diabetes Education & Support Group at Griffin Hospital will host two free presentation about health self-management during the holidays on Tues., Dec. 12 at 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the hospital, 130 Division St., Derby.

 

Certified Diabetes Educator Mary Swansiger, BSN, MPH, will lead “Navigating the Holidays,” a presentation of a holiday meal survival guide and open discussion of strategies for making the holidays happier and healthier.

 

The presentations will be in the hospital’s Childbirth Education Classroom A. There will be free valet parking for the 2:30 p.m. session.

 

The Diabetes Education & Support Group meets September - June on the second Tuesday of each month to discuss the management of diabetes, its challenges, and day-to-day dietary concerns. Individuals with diabetes and their caregivers are welcome to attend.

Downtown Seymour Celebrates the Holidays Saturday, Dec. 5

SEYMOUR- On Saturday Dec. 5, 2015 the town of Seymour will be celebrating the holidays with an array of festive events sponsored by many town organizations including the Seymour Culture and Arts Commission, American Legion, American Legion Band, Seymour EMS, Metro North, local boy and girl scout troops and Santa Clause himself!

The evening will begin with the arrival of Santa Clause at the Seymour train station on Main Street at 6:13 p.m., followed by a tree lighting by the American Legion on the corners of Bank and Wakely Streets at 6:45 p.m. The downtown merchants will be open and celebrating the holidays as well with individual festivities in their shops as part of First Saturday. The Connecticut Yuletide Carolers will also be strolling through our historic downtown in full Dickens’ costume singing the songs of the season.

Bank, First and Columbus Streets will be closed to traffic beginning at 5:30, please park on the surrounding streets. Please do not park in the First Street plaza as store owners will tow your car.

Derby Public Library cooking demo: Vegging out for the holidays

DERBY >> The Derby Public Library has scheduled a holiday cooking demo, "Vegging Out for the Holidays" on Monday, Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Stacey Ference of Savour Catering will show participants how to liven up their holiday entertaining with some new and tasty vegetable recipes. There will be samples of all demonstrated foods.

DERBY >> The Derby Public Library has scheduled another Recycle, Repurpose, and Reuse craft class on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m.

Ansonia Animal Control Officer Jeanie Roslonowski will show participants, ages 18 and over, how to create "Holiday Gifts – Going Green" by recycling everyday household items. The class will also include information on animal issues.

 "I would like to take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year.

"We are entering the New Year on a high note. Last Saturday our community shared a joint parade between our National Championship Cheerleading squads and our Number 1
ranked high school football team.

"As we celebrate this holiday season, we should focus on what we have and the
accomplishments we can be proud of. Enjoy the time you spend with family and friends, but
do not forget about your neighbor who might be alone this holiday season. I believe the
holiday season is about sharing joy and blessings.

Wesley Village in Shelton to host support group

Focus will be on dealing with loss
SHELTON - Wesley Village will host “Dealing with Loss over the Holidays,” a support group for caregivers and families, at 2 p.m. Nov. 20.

Holiday time is not easy for many people, especially those who have lost loved ones.

Join the Rev. Jim Stinson, Director of Spiritual Life at Wesley Village, as he talks about the realities of this challenging time and offers coping strategies for individuals and families.

This program will include: an overview of why holidays are so difficult, helpful tips on how to remember a loved one (while still enjoying the holidays), and practical ways to cope with loss.

The group will be held at Crosby Commons Assisted Living Community, 580 Long Hill Ave.
